Commercial production of most bivalve species involves a phase of intermediate cultivation during which juveniles are grown under protected conditions until they can be transferred to the final grow‐out location. Consequently, the aim of this study was investigating the effect of density on growth and survival in the intermediate culture of the razor clam Ensis arcuatus in raft. Two series of experiments were performed, using in the first experiment two holding systems: 5‐L plastic bottles and PVC cylinders, both perforated, covered with a 1 mm mesh net to prevent razor clam escape and a 10‐cm layer of coarse grained sand (300–1200 μm grain diameter). In this trial, two stocking densities were tested: 0.15 and 0.30 kg m?2. In the second one‐two densities were essayed (0.62 and 1.24 kg m?2) in the PCV cylinders. In the first experiment after 27 of trial higher growth in cylinders at low density was observed. At the end of this trial all juveniles died in the 5‐L plastic bottles and higher growth and survival were recorded in the cylinders at low density. In the second experiment, significant differences in growth and survival were found on day 70, with the best results at low density. Five‐L plastic bottles must be rejected as holding system for the intermediate culture of E. arcuatus and the PVC cylinders at low densities could be a good alternative. At the end of the experiment razor clams reached the adequate size for their transfer into the grow‐out system.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate practical strategies to optimize the use of a high‐docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) lipid emulsion (M70), a product with great potential in live prey enrichments for marine larviculture. Considering its particularly high content in DHA (22:6n‐3), the adequate utilization of the emulsion for Artemia enrichments was evaluated in a series of six experiments. More specifically, the bioencapsulation efficiency of M70 into Artemia nauplii was tested under different experimental conditions of oxygen source, aeration flow, incubation temperature, concentration and dosage, as well as nauplial densities. Our results showed that an optimal utilization of M70 is achieved with incubation temperatures of 28°C, moderate aeration flows and nauplial densities of 300 ind per mL. In addition, the emulsion can be dispensed in the enrichment medium in one single dose of 0.8 g L?1, with no apparent detrimental effects on its oxidative stability and Artemia nauplii survival during enrichment.  相似文献

Knowledge on environmental variability and how it is affected by disturbances is crucial for understanding patterns of biodiversity and determining adequate conservation strategies. The aim of this study is to assess environmental variability in patches undergoing post-fire vegetation recovery, identifying trends of change and their relevant drivers. We particularly evaluate: the value of three spectral indices derived from Landsat satellite data [Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Wetness Component of the Tasseled Cap Transformation (TCW)] for describing secondary succession; the effectiveness of three metrics (diversity, evenness and richness) as indicators of patch variability; and how thematic resolution can affect the perception of environmental variability patterns. While the system was previously characterised as highly resilient from estimations of vegetation cover, here we noted that more time is required to fully recover pre-fire environmental variability. Using mean diversity as indicator of patch variability, we found similar patterns of temporal change for the three spectral indices (NBR, NDVI and TCW). Analogous conclusions could be drawn for richness and evenness. Patch variability, measured as diversity, showed consistent patterns across thematic resolutions, although values increased with the number of spectral classes. However, when the variance of diversity was plotted against thematic resolution, different scale dependencies were detected for those three spectral indices, yielding a dissimilar perception of patch variability. In general terms, NDVI was the best performing spectral index to assess patterns of vegetation recovery, while TCW was the worst. Finally, burned patches were classified into three classes with similar trends of change in environmental variability, which were strongly related to fire severity, elevation and vegetation type.  相似文献

The impacts of acidic soils and Al toxicity on wheat nutrient economy have been scarcely researched under field conditions even though these soils are widely spread in wheat production areas around the world. The main objective of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the element (N, P, K, Ca and Al) economy of an Al-sensitive and an Al-tolerant wheat cultivar growing under different soil Al concentrations at field conditions. To reach this objective, two field experiments were conducted in an Andisol in Valdivia (39°47′18″S, 73°14′05″W), Chile. Treatments were a factorial arrangement of: (i) two spring wheat cultivars (Al-sensitive, Domo.INIA and Al-tolerant, Dalcahue.INIA) and (ii) five exchangeable Al levels (0-2.7 cmol(+) kg−1) with three replicates. At harvest, plant biomass was sampled and divided into 5 organ categories: ears, grains, blade leaves, stems plus sheath leaves and roots. The element content (N, P, K, Ca and Al) in each organ was measured to quantify element uptake and concentration, nutrient uptake efficiency (UPE) and nutrient utilization efficiency (UTE). Element uptake (N, P, K, Ca, and Al) was negatively affected by the increased soil Al concentration in above-ground and root biomass in both cultivars (R2 = 0.61-0.98, p < 0.01), although clear differences were found between cultivars. On the contrary, the impact of soil exchangeable Al on the plant element concentration was minor, showing weak associations with soil Al levels. However, the Al concentration in above-ground tissues of the Al-sensitive cultivar was an exception because it increased exponentially with the Al soil concentration (R2 = 0.96-0.99, p < 0.001). Nutrient uptake efficiencies, UPEs (N, P, K and Ca), were negatively affected by soil Al concentrations and were well described by linear equations in both cultivars (R2 = 0.58-0.98, p < 0.05), with notable differences between them. Both nutrient uptake (capture) and UPE were the traits that best explained above-ground biomass production (R2 = 0.82-0.99, p < 0.001, n = 20). Nutrient utilization efficiency, UTEs (N, P, K and Ca) responded more conservatively to the soil Al concentration, except for the Al sensitive cultivar under very high soil Al levels.  相似文献

The principal aim of this research was to determine the influence of wildfires on soil organic matter (SOM) content and composition in soils located on the northern slope of the Cantabrian Cordillera, an Atlantic mountainous region in the North West of Spain, where wildfires are frequent. Samples from soils with similar aspect, slope, elevation and vegetation characteristics, but with different wildfires histories were collected. Total organic carbon and total nitrogen contents were determined as well as the C/N ratio. Furthermore, a qualitative characterization of the soil organic carbon (SOC) was carried out by 13C variable amplitude cross polarization magic angle spinning (VACP/MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our results show that, on the one hand, all the sampled soils can be considered important pools of carbon in this Atlantic mountainous region, especially in the heath areas. On the other hand, the fire-affected soils present higher SOM contents than their unburnt counterparts. This could be attributed to an important reaccumulation of fresh vegetal material, which is probably a consequence of the decrease of SOM decomposition rates after fire. Moreover, charred organic compounds are not found in all the burnt soils, which could be due to the long time since the last fires events took place, to different fire severities, or to different post-fire erosion processes in the studied soils.  相似文献

Syrup formation in refrigerated doughs is a problem since it reduces the doughs’ shelf life. Microbial exogenous xylanases associated with wheat kernels were found to play a role in this syruping phenomenon. Using xylanase-producing microorganisms isolated from wheat kernels, we investigated their potency to induce syruping in dough. Growth of the fungal xylanase producer Fusarium sp. (102 colony forming units (CFU)/g dough) and the bacterial xylanase producer Paenibacillus sp. (104 CFU/g dough) in synthetic media and their respective addition to wheat dough could not bring about a significant amount of syruping. However, when these species were grown on moist wheat kernels and an extract of these kernels containing both the organisms and its xylanases was made and added to dough, intensive syruping was noted. This effect was primarily attributed to the xylanases present in the extract. These findings suggest that the involvement of xylanase-producing microorganisms in the syruping phenomenon is situated prior to harvest. Additional quantitative analyses of microbial biomass present on wheat kernels revealed that the fungi in particular could be correlated to higher microbial exogenous xylanase activities on wheat. Our results indicate that the syruping is linked to fungal xylanase production on the wheat kernels in the field.  相似文献

Aquaculture activity has grown remarkably in the last years, crustaceans being the most profitable products because of their high prices. Feeding costs represent a large portion of total operating costs in the aquaculture industry. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of food restriction on the reproductive performance of redclaw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus. Females at the onset of sexual maturity were stocked with males and were fed daily a formulated diet at 1.5% (control group) and 0.5% (restricted group) of their mean weight. The experimental period lasted 105 days. The percentage of ovigerous females and broods successfully hatched tended to be higher in restricted females compared with control females, but egg volume and weight did not differ between both experimental groups. However, the lipid concentration of rematuring ovaries was lower in restricted females than control females, suggesting that food restriction affects the amount of reserves transferred to the ovaries during vitellogenesis. The nutritional state of females was independent of the amount of food provided, as reflected by similar growth parameters and biochemical composition of the hepatopancreas in control and restricted females. Based on these results, we conclude that it is possible to reduce the feeding rate of C. quadricarinatus females to one‐third of its original value without affecting their reproductive performance and somatic growth, at least for a 105‐day period. This finding provides a useful tool for commercial producers to decrease production costs and improve water quality in culture systems.  相似文献

Assessing trait–environment relationships is crucial for predicting effects of natural and human‐induced environmental change on biota. We compiled a global database of fish assemblages in estuaries, functional traits of fishes and ecosystem features of estuaries. And we quantified the relative importance of ecosystem features as drivers of patterns of fish functional traits among estuaries worldwide (i.e. drivers of the proportions of fish traits). In addition to biogeographical context, two main environmental gradients regulate traits patterns: firstly temperature, and secondly estuary size and hydrological connectivity of the estuary with the marine ecosystem. Overall, estuaries in colder regions, with larger areas and with higher hydrological connectivity with the marine ecosystem, have higher proportions of marine fish (versus freshwater), macrocarnivores and planktivores (versus omnivores, herbivores and detritivores) and larger fish, with greater maximum depth of distribution and longer lifespan. The observed trait patterns and trait–environment relationships are likely generated by multiple causal processes linked to physiological constraints due to temperature and salinity, size‐dependent biotic interactions, as well as habitat availability and connectivity. Biogeographical context and environmental conditions drive species richness and composition, and present results show that they also drive assemblage traits. The observed trait patterns and trait–environment relationships suggest that assemblage composition is determined by the functional role of species within ecosystems. Conservation strategies should be coordinated globally and ensure protection of an array of estuaries that differ in ecosystem features, even if some of those estuaries do not support high species richness.  相似文献

Seal meat is of high nutritive value but is not highly exploited for human food due to ethical issues, undesirable flavors, and loss of nutrients during the processing/cooking step. In this work, commercially available processed seal meat was treated with its hydrolysates as preservatives with the aim of improving nutrient bioavailability. The contents of the nutrients were analyzed after digestion using a simulated dynamic digestion model, and the effects of different processing conditions, i.e., low-temperature processing and storage (25 °C) and high-temperature cooking (100 °C), of seal meat were investigated. Hydrolysates with antioxidant activity decreased the amounts of the less desirable Fe3+ ions in the seal meat digests. After treatment with hydrolysates at room temperature, a much higher total Fe content of 781.99 mg/kg was observed compared to other treatment conditions. The release of amino acids increased with temperature and was 520.54 mg/g for the hydrolysate-treated sample versus 413.12 mg/g for the control seal meat sample treated in buffer. Overall, this study provides useful data on the potential use of seal meat as a food product with high nutritive value and seal meat hydrolysates with antioxidant activity as preservatives to control oxidation in food.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Previously, we demonstrated that Broad bean mottle virus (BBMV), a member of the genus Bromovirus, could accumulate RNA 2-derived defective interfering (DI) RNAs during infection. In this work, we study how host and environmental factors affect the accumulation of DI RNAs. Serial passages of BBMV through selected plant species reveal that, with low-multiplicity inocula, some systemic hosts (Vicia faba, Nicotiana clevelandii, and N. tabacum cv. Samsum) support DI RNA accumulation after the first passage cycle but other hosts (Phaseolus vulgaris, Pisum sativum, and Glycine max) do not. However, several passages with the high-multiplicity inocula can generate DI RNAs in pea plants. Local lesion hosts (Chenopodium quinoa, C. amaranticolor, and C. murale) remain free of the DI RNA components. The size of the de novo-formed DI RNAs depends on the host and on environmental conditions. For instance, broad bean plants cultivated in a greenhouse or in a growth chamber at 20 degrees C accumulated DI RNAs of 2.4 or 1.9 kb in size, respectively. A reverse trend was observed in pea plants. Lower temperatures greatly facilitated the formation of DI RNAs in broad bean and pea hosts after the first passage. The importance of these findings for the studies on DI RNAs are discussed.  相似文献
