Photosynthetic rate, nitrogen concentration and morphological properties of canopy leaves were studied in 18 trees, comprising five dipterocarp species, in a tropical rain forest in Sarawak, Malaysia. Photosynthetic rate at light saturation (Pmax) differed significantly across species, varying from 7 to 18 micro mol m(-2) s(-1). Leaf nitrogen concentration and morphological properties, such as leaf blade and palisade layer thickness, leaf mass per area (LMA) and surface area of mesophyll cells per unit leaf area (Ames/A), also varied significantly across species. Among the relationships with leaf characteristics, Pmax had the strongest correlation with leaf mesophyll parameters, such as palisade cell layer thickness (r2 = 0.76, P < 0.001) and Ames/A (r2 = 0.73, P < 0.001). Leaf nitrogen concentration and Pmax per unit area also had a significant but weaker correlation (r2 = 0.46, P < 0.01), whereas Pmax had no correlation, or only weakly significant correlations, with leaf blade thickness and LMA. Shorea beccariana Burck, which had the highest P(max) of the species studied, also had the thickest palisade layer, with up to five or more layers. We conclude that interspecific variation in photosynthetic capacity in tropical rain forest canopies is influenced more by leaf mesophyll structure than by leaf thickness, LMA or leaf nitrogen concentration.  相似文献

Recently, it was shown that individual tree heights could be accurately estimated using small-footprint airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing. Because most of the areas studied previously were limited to flat terrain, we investigated the accuracy of LiDAR-derived individual tree height estimates for different types of topographical features in mountainous forests with a steeper and more complex topography. Several middle-aged (40–50 years old) sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantations are found in the mountainous regions in Japan; hence, we chose 48-year-old sugi plantations to investigate the accuracy of these estimates. The surveyed area was divided into three types of topographical features; steep slope (mean slope ± SD; 37.6° ± 5.8°), gentle slope (15.6° ± 3.7°), and gentle yet rough terrain (16.8° ± 7.8°). Before estimating tree heights, the number of detected trees within each topographical feature was researched. In each of these terrains, the percentage of trees detected correctly was 74%, 86%, and 92%; the average error between LiDAR-derived and field-measured tree heights was 0.227m, –0.473m, and –0.183m; and the accuracy of the LiDAR-derived tree height estimates, given as root mean square error (RMSE), was 0.901m, 0.846m, and 0.576m, respectively. Consequently, the procedure presented in this study could detect most canopy trees and estimate individual tree heights with an accuracy better than 1m, even in a forest with a mean slope angle of approximately 38°; thus, indicating that small-footprint airborne LiDAR will be a useful tool for accurately estimating the heights of individual canopy trees in sugi plantations in mountainous areas.  相似文献

Seedlings ofEucalyptus viminalis were grown for 50 days with their stems bent so tension wood would form. Every 10 days the lignin content, monomeric composition, and peroxidase activity in the tension wood were compared with those in the lower side (opposite wood) and in vertically grown controls. The lignin content in the developing tension wood started to decrease after 10 days of bending and kept decreasing for 50 days, whereas those in control plants and opposite wood remained almost unchanged. The yields of syringaldehyde from tension wood by nitrobenzene oxidation increased, and consequently the syringyl/ guaiacyl ratio of the lignin was higher in tension wood than in opposite wood and control plants. The peroxidase ionically bound to the cell walls (IPO) catalyzed oxidation of guaiacol and syringaldazine. The syringaldazineoxidizing activity of IPO from tension wood increased, whereas the activities of IPO from opposite wood and control plants did not show any marked change. In tension wood the increase in syringaldazine-oxidizing activity of IPO was consistent with an increase in the syringaldehyde yield. This suggests that IPO contributes to syringyl lignin deposition as other enzymes involved in the monolignol biosynthesis do in tension wood formation.This study was presented at the 50th Annual Meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Kyoto, April 2000  相似文献

Penetration rates of laser pulses transmitted from a small-footprint airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system in closed-canopy, middle-aged (40–50 years old) hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Sieb. et Zucc.) and sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantations that had similar levels of canopy openness were studied. The number of transmitted pulses was 107 427 points/ha for the hinoki cypress stand and 122 883 points/ha for the sugi stand. The penetration rates of the first (Pf) and second pulses (Ps) that reached the ground were 0.1% and 1.0% in the hinoki cypress stand, and 2.6% and 5.5% in the sugi stand, respectively. Penetration rates for the total number of pulses (Pf+s) that reached the ground within each stand were 1.1% and 8.1%, respectively, and values for Pf+s, Pf, and Ps for sugi and hinoki cypress stands were significantly different (P < 0.001). The results of this study indicated that the generation of accurate digital terrain models in dense hinoki cypress stands with complex topographies using only the data from laser pulses with poor laser penetration rates is likely to be difficult.  相似文献

Hybrids of wheat (Triticum durum) × rye (Secale montanum) (2n = 21) were treated with a 0.06 % solution of colchicine. In the induction of fertile plants, fertile spikes, and seed-set per spike, the root immersion technique was 21.7 %, 14.1 %, and 4.4 % respectively more effective than the use of the inverted vial. Colchicine solutions ranging in pH from 3.5 to 7.5 with the root immersion technique reached the highest frequencies of fertile (or partially fertile) hybrids (77.7 %), and fertile spikes (68.9 %) at a pH 5.5 used for the treatment, although the highest overall percentage of large Q seeds resulted from treatments at low pH (3.5). The overall mean frequency of induced fertile plants was six-fold higher when treated in a growth chamber (19/15 °C day/night temperature and 18 h photoperiod) compared to treatments conducted in a greenhouse. The frequency of euploidy (2n = 42) was found to be highest in the large seed class and lowest, i.e. just about 50 %, in the class of small seeds.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the effect of converter furnace slag applied as a liming amendment and continuous cropping of Qing gin cai ( Brassicae chinensis L.) or leaf daikon ( Raphanus sativus ) on the incidence of clubroot disease and the resting spore density in soil, pot cultivation tests were carried out. In the pot tests, pH(H2O) was 5.2–6.1 in the non-application pot, and 7.1–7.6 in the pots receiving an application of converter furnace slag.
A significant incidence of club-root disease was apparent in the non-application pots of Qing gin cai . The resting spore density in the soils decreased soon after harvesting, but then increased after mixing the infected roots and soils.
On the other hand, the incidence of the disease was suppressed significantly, in application pots of continuously cropped Qing gin cai . Furthermore, the resting spore density in these soils decreased with repeated cultivation.
These results agreed well with the results from field cultivation tests that the authors have already reported. Macfarlane has reported that the suppression mechanism of clubroot disease brought about by the amelioration of soil acidity is effected through the inhibition of resting spore germination.
In this study, the decrease of resting spores density was associated with the cultivation of Qing gin cai under conditions of high soil pH. From these results, it is concluded that the suppression mechanism is caused by some phenomenon that occurs after the primary zoospore is infected with the root hair.
Until now, avoidance of continuous cropping of susceptible cruciferous vegetables was promoted as one of the most fundamental countermeasures for the control of clubroot disease. However, continuous cropping of suceptible cruciferous vegetables will be a useful technique to decrease resting density specifically under conditions of high soil pH.  相似文献

The applicability of quantifying genetically modified (GM) maize and soy to processed foods was investigated using heat treatment processing models. The detection methods were based on real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Ground seeds of insect resistant GM maize (MON810) and glyphosate tolerant Roundup Ready (RR) soy were dissolved in water and were heat treated by autoclaving for various time intervals. The calculated copy numbers of the recombinant and taxon specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences in the extracted DNA solution were found to decrease with time. This decrease was influenced by the PCR-amplified size. The conversion factor (Cf), which is the ratio of the recombinant DNA sequence to the taxon specific DNA sequence and is used as a constant number for calculating GM% at each event, tended to be stable when the sizes of PCR products of two DNA sequences were nearly equal. The results suggested that the size of the PCR product plays a key role in the quantification of GM organisms in processed foods. It is believed that the Cf of the endosperm (3n) is influenced by whether the GM originated from a paternal or maternal source. The embryos and endosperms were separated from the F1 generation seeds of five GM maize events, and their Cf values were measured. Both paternal and maternal GM events were identified. In these, the endosperm Cf was lower than that of the embryo, and the embryo Cf was lower than that of the endosperm. These results demonstrate the difficulties encountered in the determination of GM% in maize grains (F2 generation) and in processed foods from maize and soy.  相似文献

Mineral concentrations of onions (Allium cepa L.) grown under various conditions, including factors (fertilization, crop year, variety, and provenance), were investigated to clarify how much each factor contributes to the variation of their concentrations. This was because the mineral concentrations might be affected by various factors. The ultimate goal of this study was to develop a technique to determine the geographic origins of onions by mineral composition. Samples were onions grown under various conditions at 52 fields in 18 farms in Hokkaido, Japan. Twenty-six elements (Li, Na, Mg, Al, P, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Y, Mo, Cd, Cs, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Gd, W, and Tl) in these samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Fertilization conditions and crop years of onions caused variations of P, Ni, Cu, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cs, and Tl concentrations in onions; different onion varieties also showed variations in numerous element concentrations. However, the variations of mineral compositions of onions by these factors were smaller than the differences between production places with a few exceptions. Furthermore, Na, Rb, and Cs in group IA of the periodic table, Ca, Sr, and Ba in group IIA, and Zn and Cd in group IIB showed similar concentration patterns by group; this result demonstrated that elements in the same periodic groups behaved similarly in terms of their absorption in onions.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of hinokitiol (a natural antibacterial compound extracted from Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai) and an organic acid mixture (citrate content 50%) on ruminal fermentation. Antibacterial properties were examined by measuring minimal inhibitory concentration. Hinokitiol at 1.56 µg/mL or an organic acid mixture at 1600 µg/mL inhibited Streptococcus bovis growth. The combination of 0.78 µg/mL hinokitiol and 200 µg/mL of an organic acid mixture also inhibited S. bovis growth. Both hinokitiol and the hinokitiol and an organic acid mixture combination showed strong antibacterial properties on Gram‐positive bacteria such as S. bovis, but relatively weak antibacterial activities on Gram‐negative bacteria such as Megasphaera elsdenii. Three ruminally cannulated heifers were fed a bloat‐producing diet containing barley, pelleted alfalfa meal, soybean meal and salt without long‐cut roughage to investigate the ruminal characteristics in vivo. Feeding to heifers a bloat‐producing diet containing 7.8 mg/kg hinokitiol and 0.2% of an organic acid mixture significantly decreased the increase in stable ingesta volume. Hinokitiol or an organic acid mixture did not affect ruminal volatile fatty acids, protozoa and bacteria. These results suggest that a combination of hinokitiol and an organic acid mixture might reduce frothy bloat in cattle fed high‐grain diets.  相似文献

The aims of the present study were to clarify the effect of kisspeptin‐10 (Kp10) on the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in pre‐pubertal and post‐pubertal male ruminants. Four male goats (Shiba goats) were given an intravenous (i.v.) injection of Kp10 (5 µg/kg body weight (b.w.)), gonadotoropin‐releasing hormone (GnRH, 1 µg/kg b.w.), or 2 mL of saline as a control at the ages of 3 (pre‐pubertal) and 6 (post‐pubertal) months. A single i.v. injection of Kp10 significantly stimulated the release of LH and T in both groups. The area under the response curve (AUC) of LH for a 60‐min period after the i.v. injection of Kp10 was significantly greater in the pre‐pubertal goats (P < 0.05). The AUC of T for a 120 min period post‐injection did not differ between the two age groups. A single i.v. injection of GnRH also significantly stimulated the release of LH and T in both groups (P < 0.05). The secretory pattern of LH and T in response to GnRH resembled that in response to Kp10. These results show that the LH‐releasing response to Kp10 is greater in pre‐pubertal than post‐pubertal male goats. They also show that Kp10, as well as GnRH, is able to stimulate the release of T in male goats.  相似文献
