An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that field peas may replace soybean meal in diets fed to growing and finishing pigs without negatively influencing pig performance, carcass quality, or pork palatability. Forty-eight pigs (initial average BW 22.7 +/- 1.21 kg) were allotted to 1 of 3 treatments with 2 pigs per pen. There were 8 replications per treatment, 4 with barrows and 4 with gilts. The treatments were control, medium field peas, and maximum field peas. Pigs were fed grower diets for 35 d, early finisher diets for 35 d, and late finisher diets for 45 d. Pigs receiving the control treatment were fed corn-soybean meal diets. All diets fed to pigs receiving the medium field peas treatment contained 36% field peas and varying amounts of corn; soybean meal was also included in the grower and the early finisher diets fed to pigs on this treatment. In contrast, no soybean meal was included in diets fed to pigs on the maximum field peas treatment, and field peas were included at concentrations of 66, 48, and 36% in the grower, early finisher, and late finisher diets, respectively. Pig performance was monitored within each phase and for the entire experimental period. At the conclusion of the experiment, carcass composition, carcass quality, and the palatability of pork chops and pork patties were measured. Results showed that there were no effects of dietary treatments on ADFI, ADG, or G:F. Likewise, there were no differences in carcass composition among the treatment groups, but gilts had larger (P = 0.001) and deeper (P = 0.003) LM, less backfat (P = 0.007), and a greater (P = 0.002) lean meat percentage than barrows. The pH and marbling of the LM, and the 10th rib backfat were not influenced by treatment, but there was a trend (P = 0.10) for more marbling in barrows than in gilts. The subjective color scores (P = 0.003) and the objective color score (P = 0.06) indicated that dietary field peas made the LM darker and more desirable. Pork chops from pigs fed field peas also had less (P = 0.02) moisture loss compared with chops from pigs fed the control diet. Treatment or sex did not influence palatability of pork chops or pork patties. In conclusion, field peas may replace all of the soybean meal in diets fed to growing and finishing pigs without negatively influencing pig performance, carcass composition, carcass quality, or pork palatability.  相似文献

A growth performance and carcass evaluation study was conducted to determine the maximal inclusion rate of corn distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) in grower-finisher pig diets when formulated on a total AA basis. A total of 240 (28.4 +/- 0.8 kg of BW) crossbred pigs [(Yorkshire x Landrace) x Duroc] were allotted randomly within sex and weight outcome groups to 1 of 24 pens. Pens were assigned randomly within the initial BW groups to 1 of 4 dietary treatment sequences in a 5-phase grower-finisher feeding program in a 4 x 3 factorial arrangement of treatments. The inclusion level of DDGS (0, 10, 20, or 30%) in the diet and the initial BW class [low (23.2 kg), medium (28.1 kg), or high (33.8 kg)] served as the main factors for the grower-finisher performance study. All diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of total Lys, ME, calcium, and phosphorus within each phase. Pigs were slaughtered and carcass data were collected when the average BW of pigs in a pen reached 114 +/- 2.25 kg. Dietary treatment and initial weight groups did not interact for any response variables, and only the main effects of dietary treatment are presented. Pigs fed the 20 or 30% DDGS diets had reduced ADG (P < 0.05) compared with that of the 0 or 10% DDGS groups, but ADFI was unaffected by dietary treatment. Gain:feed decreased when pigs were fed 30% DDGS (P < 0.05) compared with the 0, 10, and 20% DDGS dietary inclusion levels. Loin depth was lower in pigs fed the 30% DDGS diets (P < 0.05), but backfat depth and percentage of carcass lean did not differ among treatments. Iodine number of carcass fat increased linearly (P < 0.01) with increasing dietary DDGS concentration, and belly firmness adjusted for belly thickness was reduced (P < 0.05) for pigs fed the 30% DDGS diets compared with pigs fed the 0 or 20% DDGS diets. Color measurements, ultimate pH, and visual evaluations (color, firmness, and marbling scores) of the LM did not differ among treatments. Cooking loss, 24-h drip loss, and total moisture loss were not affected by DDGS in the diets. However, differences were detected between 0 and 20% DDGS treatments for 11-d purge loss (P < 0.05). Dietary treatment did not affect Warner-Bratzler shear force of cooked loin chops. Results from this study indicate that when diets for grower-finisher pigs are formulated on a total AA basis, less than 20% DDGS should be included in the diet for optimal performance and carcass composition. Feeding DDGS in swine finishing diets did not have any detrimental effects on pork muscle quality.  相似文献

Decadal to centennial land-cover changes are important drivers of many environmental issues, including biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles and, especially, the global carbon balance. In general, changes are well documented over only a few decades. Studies of land-cover changes and its drivers over centuries are rare. Therefore, the main objectives of this study are (1) to trace the development of the actual pattern of forest-open land over 170 years, and (2) to associate land-cover classes with site conditions (soils) as well as with other driving forces during three periods (1790–1838, 1838–1870, and 1870–1960). For these purposes, we used a combined approach of GIS-techniques and historical reconstructions from archives. The shifts of percentages for established forests, afforestation, clearings and open land on different soils were checked using a chi square test. From the archives, we obtained information on demographic, political/institutional and economic/technological factors, which are assumed to be drivers for past land-cover changes. Percentages of most land-cover classes hardly differed between the periods. However, established forests remained mainly on sandy soils and, to a large extend, afforestation was realised on sandy soils. Clearings reached high percentages on fluvial sands and organic sediments in the early period. A complex of demographic, political/institutional and economic/technological factors also had a considerable impact on land use/cover change in the Prignitz region. Thus, in addition to the strong association of land-cover classes with soils, our study demonstrated that other driving forces, i.e. political and economic factors, played an important role in the full understanding of land use from the past to the present.  相似文献

Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIFS) was nondestructively applied on strawberries (EX = 337 nm, EM = 400-820 nm) to test the feasibility of quantitatively determining native phenolic compounds in strawberries. Eighteen phenolic compounds were identified in fruit skin by UV and MS spectroscopy and quantitatively determined by use of rp-HPLC for separation and diode-array or chemical reaction detection. Partial least-squares calibration models were built for single phenolic compounds by means of nondestructively recorded fluorescence spectra in the blue-green wavelength range using different data preprocessing methods. The direct orthogonal signal correction resulted in r (2) = 0.99 and rmsep < 8% for p-coumaroyl-glucose, and r (2) = 0.99 and rmsep < 24% for cinnamoyl-glucose. In comparison, the correction of the fluorescence spectral data with simultaneously recorded reflectance spectra did not further improve the calibration models. Results show the potential of LIFS for a rapid and nondestructive assessment of contents of p-coumaroyl-glucose and cinnamoyl-glucose in strawberry fruits.  相似文献

Quantitative information about the amount and stability of organic carbon (OC) in different soil organic‐matter (OM) fractions and in specific organic compounds and compound‐classes is needed to improve our understanding of organic‐matter sequestration in soils. In the present paper, we summarize and integrate results performed on two different arable soils with continuous maize cropping (a) Stagnic Luvisol with maize cropping for 24 y, b) Luvic Phaeozem with maize cropping for 39 y) to identify (1) the storage of OC in different soil organic‐matter fractions, (2) the function of these fractions with respect to soil‐OC stabilization, (3) the importance and partitioning of fossil‐C deposits, and (4) the rates of soil‐OC stabilization as assessed by compound‐specific isotope analyses. The fractionation procedures included particle‐size fractionation, density fractionation, aggregate fractionation, acid hydrolysis, different oxidation procedures, isolation of extractable lipids and phospholipid fatty acids, pyrolysis, and the determination of black C. Stability of OC was determined by 13C and 14C analyses. The main inputs of OC were plant litter (both sites) and deposition of fossil C likely from coal combustion and lignite dust (only Phaeozem).  相似文献

This paper presents results from a survey of border hedges on farmland in western Kenya. The survey covered 160000 ha of high potential land in eastern Siaya District and Vihiga District of western Kenya. The survey attempted to widen the knowledge of the typology, the biomass and the parameters influencing the spatial distribution of hedge types. Spatial analysis was used to delimit hedge type sub-regions (using cluster analysis) and to identify the variables influencing the spatial distribution of hedge types (using discriminant analysis). It is demonstrated that a complex association of variables is influencing the subdivision of the two districts in hedge type sub-regions in which ethnicity, population density, area in woodlots and ecological variables like elevation, rainfall and soil fertility are important variables. These variables are influencing each other and are responsible for the contrasting situation in Vihiga and Siaya District. Border hedges have similar functions in both districts (demarcation of land, to prevent cattle from entering), nevertheless species composition and dimensions differ remarkably in both districts. Border hedges in Siaya District are poorly managed or not managed at all. In Vihiga District people are used to manage their hedges. Agroforestry techniques, for example techniques based on frequent pruning of border hedges, have a high chance in being successful in this district because no additional investment in labour or time is required. The spatial distribution in the amount of biomass is strongly correlated with the distribution in the per cent area ground cover of border hedges. This means that secondary data on the area in hedges derived from aerial photographs can serve as a useful indicator of the biomass present. As a result, the most difficult part of the field survey, the destructive sampling for the determination of the biomass, can be eliminated, making general surveys considerably easier. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

One hundred thirty-eight consumers evaluated steaks from the complexus (CX), infraspinatus (IF), serratus ventralis (SV), supraspinatus (SS), and triceps brachii (TB) from the wholesale beef chuck; the deep pectoral (DP) from the wholesale brisket; and the longissimus thoracis (LT) from the wholesale rib. The LT was used as a reference for comparison to the other muscles. Ten USDA Choice and ten USDA Select boneless boxed beef subprimals were used for each muscle. Subprimals were aged 14 d from box date, frozen, and cut into 2.5-cm-thick steaks. Consumers rated the IF highest (P < 0.05) for overall like, tenderness, juiciness, and flavor, and assigned it the highest (P < 0.05) price/0.45 kg. The TB also was rated higher (P < 0.05) than the LT for overall like, tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and price/0.45 kg. The SV and CX were rated as being similar (P < 0.05) to the LT for overall like, tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and price/0.45 kg. Consumers rated the SS lower (P < 0.05) than the LT for tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and price. The DP was rated as the toughest, driest, and blandest (P < 0.05), resulting in assignment of the lowest (P < 0.05) price/0.45 kg. Differences in palatability ratings due to quality grade were found for several muscles; USDA Choice SV and SS were rated higher (P < 0.05) for overall like, tenderness, and juiciness than USDA Select SV and SS. For the IF, USDA Choice was rated higher (P < 0.05) for tenderness and juiciness than USDA Select. The USDA Choice TB was rated higher (P < 0.05) for juiciness, and the USDA Choice DP was rated higher (P < 0.05) for overall like, than their USDA Select counterparts. Tenderness, juiciness, and flavor ratings were correlated with overall like ratings (r = 0.84, 0.77, and 0.76, respectively) and with price (r = 0.73, 0.70, and 0.68, respectively). These results indicate the IF, TB, SV, and CX were acceptable, whereas and the SS and DP were unacceptable as steaks.  相似文献

Purpose

Most of the agricultural landscape in Europe, and elsewhere, consists of mosaics with scattered fragments of semi-natural habitat like small forest fragments. Mutual interactions between forest fragments and agricultural areas influence ecosystem processes such as nutrient cycling, a process strongly mediated by the macrodetritivore community, which is however, poorly studied. We investigated macrodetritivore distribution patterns at local and landscape-level and used a key functional trait (desiccation resistance) to gain mechanistic insights of the putative drivers.

Methods

Macrodetritivores were sampled in forest edges-centres of 224 European forest fragments across 14 landscapes opposing in land use intensity. We used a multilevel analysis of variance to assess the relative contribution of different spatial scales in explaining activity-density and Shannon-diversity of woodlice and millipedes, together with a model-based analysis of the multivariate activity-density data testing the effect on species composition. Secondly, we tested if desiccation resistance of macrodetritivores varied across communities at different spatial scales using linear mixed effect models.

Results

Forest edge-centre and landscape use intensity determined activity-density and community composition of macrodetritivores in forest fragments, while fragment characteristics like size and continuity were relatively unimportant. Forest edges and higher intensity landscapes supported higher activity-density of macrodetritivores and determined species composition. Forest edges sustained woodlouse communities dominated by more drought tolerant species.

Conclusions

Landscape use intensity and forest edges are main drivers in macrodetritivore distribution in forest fragments with desiccation resistance a good predictor of macrodetritivore distribution. Key functional traits can help us to predict changes in community structure in changing landscapes.

Termite activities are known to significantly influence small-scale soil properties in tropical savannas. The lateral and vertical extent of the alterations to the nest's surrounding, and particularly resulting impacts on diagnostic soil horizons remain largely unresolved until today. We examined the effects of mound-building termites on soil genesis and constitutive chemical soil properties in and below their nests. Two transects to a soil depth of 100 cm were dug below three younger mounds of Cornitermes silvestrii (the primary nest builder), three older mounds in which C. silvestrii had died out and which were secondarily colonized mainly by Nasutitermes kemneri, and three reference sites in the Brazilian Cerrado. The samples were characterized by standard procedures for soil classification; in addition, phosphorus extractions were conducted on selected samples using NaHCO3 for labile P forms, and concentrated HCl for stable P forms. This data set was then used to build calibration models for the prediction of labile and stable inorganic (Pi) and organic (Po) P forms, as well as for contents of organic carbon (OC), for the remaining samples applying mid-infrared spectroscopy in combination with partial least squares regression (MIRS-PLSR). We can show that the termite influence on the soil was sufficiently large to change diagnostic characteristics of the soils under termite mounds. The MIRS-PLSR predictions were suitable for quantifying organic carbon and most of the labile and stable phosphorus fractions. They showed an enrichment of OC, NaHCO3-Po and NaHCO3-Pi contents in nests inhabited by primary and secondary termites by factors of 1.6–2.0 and 1.4–1.5, respectively. The soils surrounding the nests had higher contents of OC and NaHCO3-P under both nest types vertically down to 30 cm below the lower nest border, and OC and NaHCO3-Pi contents were elevated at minimum to a lateral distance of 60 cm away from the nest border. As the pattern of HClconc-Pi, which comprised 95% of total P, showed no variations, we conclude that the higher NaHCO3-Pi amount was formed in termite nests by changing the availability of the more stable HClconc-Pi. In contrast to the contents, the OC and NaHCO3-P stocks below the mounds inhabited by primary termites were comparable to those inhabited by secondary ones, because the bulk density of the secondarily inhabited nests was elevated. This was due to a transport of clay-rich material from the subsurface argic horizons into the nests. Here, the secondary termites even reverted the lessivation observed in the reference soils and under mounds inhabited by primary termites, thus causing the soil types to change from Alisols and Acrisols to the properties of Umbrisols.  相似文献

Nontarget effects of pesticides may occur when the active ingredients have a long persistence in the environment. The half-lives of six insecticides commonly used in Thai fruit orchards under tropical field conditions were determined. A mixture of endosulfan-alpha and -beta, chlorpyrifos, malathion, dimethoate, and mevinphos was applied five times in 10-day intervals onto an Ultisol (lychee plantation ground-covered with grass vegetation, northwestern Thailand). On days 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 after each application, composite samples of the topsoil (0-10 cm) were collected and exhaustively extracted. Fitting a first-order model to the datasets revealed rapid initial dissipation [half-lives from 2.2 +/- 0.4 (malathion) to 5.4 +/- 1.3 days (chlorpyrifos)]. Volatilization appeared to be a major process of pesticide dissipation, especially for malathion and mevinphos. Because 8% of the applied endosulfan-alpha and -beta had been converted to the sulfate metabolite within 1 day after the first application, also microbial degradation contributed significantly to pesticide dissipation. Nevertheless, no trend in half-lives over the five application cycles could be observed, indicating that accelerated microbial degradation did not occur for these insecticides following the five applications. Precipitation and soil moisture were key parameters of dissipation, but dissipation processes were too complex to be generalized for all substances studied. Despite their short half-lives, all pesticides except mevinphos accumulated in soil (up to 656%; endosulfan-alpha), and this accumulation correlated significantly with the hydrophobicity of the substances (r = 0.88). This was interpreted as an aging process, and it was concluded that pesticide aging must be considered relevant also in tropical environments, where it has received very limited attention so far.  相似文献
