Farmers in Ghana use a variety of soil‐fertility management practices to optimize the benefits of shifting cultivation and/or to intensify their production. The research question was to analyze the relationship between these practices and the availability of the production factors land, labor, and capital. A farm survey along a gradient through SW Ghana showed that there is only a weak link between the intensification of traditional farming systems, population pressure, and reduced fallow periods as long as shifting cultivation is possible and common. Even where fallow periods reach a cut‐off point, farmers might look for land in remoter areas or invest in off‐farm activities. Only where market proximity supports the production of high‐value crops, investment flows are used to maintain continuous cultivation on favorable production sites, especially those with water access. The results verify the validity of the framework of agricultural‐systems dynamics in W Africa, developed by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the importance to distinguish between population‐driven and market‐driven situations. Both meet in periurban areas, which make them hot spots for research and development, while support for intensification is likely to fail where markets are far and shifting cultivation still an option.  相似文献

Precision agriculture (PA) technologies have been commercially available since the early 1990s. However, not only has the pace of adoption in the US been relatively modest but a surprisingly large number of producers are not familiar with these technologies. Using farm level survey data, this study quantifies the role that awareness plays in the decision to adopt PA technology and allows us to explore the potential for public or private information programs to affect the diffusion of PA. PA adoption and awareness are modeled as jointly determined dichotomous variables and their determinants are estimated using a two-stage (i.e. instrumental variable) logistic specification. The first-stage logit model indicated that operator education and computer literacy, full-time farming, and farm size positively affected the probability of PA awareness while the effect of age was negative. Grain and oilseed farms (i.e. corn, soybean, and small grains) and specialty crop farms (i.e. fruits, vegetables, and nuts) as well as farms located in the Heartland and Northern Great Plains regions were most likely to be aware of PA technologies. The second-stage PA adoption logit model, which included an instrumental variable to account for the endogeneity of awareness, revealed that farm size, full-time farming, and computer literacy positively influenced the likelihood of PA adoption. Grain and oilseed farms were the most likely types of farms to adopt PA as were farms in the Heartland region. Awareness, as defined in this study, was not found to be limiting the adoption of PA, suggesting that farmers for whom the technology is profitable are already aware of the technology and that a sector-wide public or private initiative to disseminate PA information would not likely have a major impact on PA diffusion.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to show how culture – shared norms and values – is challenged and used to facilitate cooperative behavior within the context of farmer field schools (FFS) in central Luzon, Philippines. The success of the FFS is primarily associated with cultural norms that encourage experiential and collective learning and eventually lead to the adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) methods among the farmers. The study was conducted in central Luzon, the rice granary region of the Philippines, from 1992 to 1995 and again in 1999. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed. Results indicate that a keen understanding of Filipino culture and values is essential if FFS is to be successful and if farmers are to successfully learn and practice IPM. Florencia Palis has a PhD in anthropology and is working as a post-doctoral fellow at the Crop and Environmental Sciences Division (CESD) of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. 蔬菜是劳动密集型、技术密集型种植产业,农户对蔬菜种植技术的采用至关重要。本文基于对环渤海蔬菜主产区山东、辽宁和河北的农户样本调研数据,侧重于研究人力资本如何影响种植技术采用。在对农户人力资本进行聚类分析的基础上,运用负二项回归分析法从农户人力资本视角对农户蔬菜种植技术采用行为的影响进行实证分析。结果表明:根据蔬菜种植户的关键特征可分为年轻型农户、经验型农户和社会型农户3 类;农户户主年龄及年龄二次项分别对蔬菜种植技术采用数量有正向和负向的影响,村干部身份、蔬菜种植年限及接受政府组织培训指导的频次对种植技术采用数量有正向影响。  相似文献

针对农村互联网使用能否有效推动农户农业机械化发展这一现实问题,基于微观数据,采用OLS模型估计农户通过互联网获取农业信息对农机社会化服务采纳的影响,并使用工具变量法和处理效应模型控制内生性,同时进行多种稳健性检验和异质性分析。结果表明:1)通过互联网获取农业信息与农户农机社会化服务采纳为负相关关系,使用2种不同方法控制内生性得出的系数分别为-2.3和-1.8;2)异质性检验显示,互联网信息获取与农机社会化服务采纳的反向关系在老年农户和经营规模极小农户的样本中并不成立;3)机制检验显示,互联网信息获取对农户自购农机有显著的促进作用。使用互联网获取农业信息在现阶段抑制了农户农机社会化服务采纳,但有助于推动农户自购农机;在通过互联网获取信息到有效利用网络信息获取收益之间还有更深层次的数字鸿沟。  相似文献

Laser land leveling has been increasingly adopted in the irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping system in the state of Haryana (India), located in the north-western Indo-Gangetic Plains. Still, many farmers have applied it to only a fraction of their land. In this study, we used data collected from 621 farm households in Haryana and applied a double-hurdle model for assessing the factors that determine the adoption and intensity of laser-leveling technology. The results show that large land holders are more likely to laser level their farm land; however, we found a negative association between land holdings and the proportion of laser-leveled land. Information about technology through farmer-to-farmer communication and through private traders, participation in agricultural training and membership in local agricultural institutions increased both the likelihood and the intensity of adoption. Our findings call for a closer collaboration among the various stakeholders, specifically to promote farmer-to-farmer communication through increased participation in local institutions and increase the rate of adoption of laser leveling technology.  相似文献
