Acute myeloid leukemia is an uncommon hematopoietic neoplasm of dogs that should be differentiated from lymphoid neoplasms, such as lymphoma, because of different treatment protocols and a worse prognosis. Thoracic radiography is performed frequently in dogs with suspected hematopoietic neoplasia, and detecting a mediastinal mass often prioritizes lymphoma as the most likely diagnosis. However, we have observed a mediastinal mass in several dogs with acute myeloid leukemia and hypothesized that (1) the frequency of a mediastinal mass was higher and (2) the size of the mass was larger in dogs with acute myeloid leukemia compared to dogs with lymphoid neoplasms. In this analytical study (observational, retrospective, and cross‐sectional), the sample population included 238 dogs with hematopoietic neoplasia. These dogs were divided into lymphoid (large cell lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia) and myeloid groups based on standard phenotyping tests. A mediastinal mass was detected during thoracic radiography in 73/218 (33%) and nine of 20 (45%) dogs in the lymphoid and myeloid groups (P = 0.21), respectively. The median size ratio of mediastinal mass to cardiac silhouette was 0.20 and 0.23 in the lymphoid and myeloid groups (P = 0.96), respectively. Additionally, we observed normal thoracic radiographs in 111/218 (51%) dogs in the lymphoid group and nine of 20 (45%) dogs in the myeloid group. In conclusion, acute myeloid leukemia should be considered when a mediastinal mass is detected during radiography in dogs with suspected hematopoietic neoplasia—but the presence or size of a mediastinal mass does not differentiate between myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms.  相似文献

An indoor‐only, 5‐year‐old, spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented for an ophthalmic examination of the left eye. An intraocular tumor with secondary glaucoma and blindness was diagnosed; the globe was enucleated and sent for histopathological examination. Gross examination revealed a solid white mass filling the entire vitreous space and replacing the iris and ciliary body. The lens and retina appeared to be similarly replaced by the neoplasm. Histological examination revealed a complete loss of the internal ocular structures, with a ruptured capsule as the only remnant of the lens within an extensive malignant mesenchymal neoplastic cell proliferation. The cells were polygonal, with well‐defined cytoplasmic borders and abundant weakly basophilic cytoplasm, embedded within the islands of chondroid matrix. No neoplastic invasion of the sclera was apparent. The animal died 6 months after the enucleation due to respiratory distress. Gross examination revealed numerous firm, white to tan nodular masses with smooth to mildly irregular surfaces dispersed throughout the parietal pleura, thoracic surface of the diaphragm, tracheobronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes, pericardium, and lungs. On cross‐section, the neoplastic nodules were solid and variably translucent, resembling hyaline cartilage. Histologically, these nodules were similar to the neoplasm identified earlier in the left globe. Metastasis of post‐traumatic ocular chondrosarcoma has not yet been described in cats. This is therefore believed to be the first report of metastases of this type of neoplasm in cats. This case adds to the limited set of data on the outcome of this type of tumor.  相似文献

AIM:To explore the effective treatment and prognostic factors of 12 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related cutaneous Kaposi sarcoma (KS) in Chinese Han people. METHODS:The clinicopathological characteristics and immune phenotypes of the 12 patients with AIDS-related cutaneous KS were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS:The 12 cases of AIDS-related cutaneous KS were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive. Most skin lesions of the 12 patients presented as purple and solid papules or plaques. Skin biopsy showed the diffuse or sheet-like infiltration of spindle cells, the active proliferation of slit-like blood vessels, the extravasation of erythrocytes, the deposition of hemosiderin, and the infiltration of inflammatory cells. The results of immunohistochemistry were as follows: T-cell ubiquitin C-terminal hydroxylase L1 (UCHL1) (+), local CD31 (+), endothelial cell factor VIII (+), HHF-35 (+) in the vessel wall, vimentin (+), S-100 protein (-), spindle cell CD34 (+++) in 6 cases and CD34 (-) in 1 case. The 12 patients were all treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Four patients with small sarcoma were treated with surgery and microwave therapy, and the prognosis is good. Two patients with greater sarcoma were treated microwave therapy, and most skin lesions disappeared. In 6 patients with widely-distributed sarcoma, 5 cases were given microwave and 1 case was given microwave and chemotherapy, and then 5 cases gained significant efficacy and 1 case died. CONCLUSION: The clinicopathological characteristics and immune phenotypes of the 12 cases of AIDS-related cutaneous KS in Chinese Han people are similar to those in other people. HAART is necessary for the treatment of AIDS-related cutaneous KS. The patients in the early stage with the sarcoma smaller than 2 cm in diameter should be treated with surgery and microwave therapy, and the patients with the sarcoma greater than 2 cm in diameter should be treated with chemotherapy and microwave therapy.  相似文献

Palliative-intent radiation therapy can alleviate pain and clinical signs in dogs with cancer, but optimal fractionation scheme is unknown. The objective of this retrospective case series is to evaluate clinical benefit, objective response, adverse effects, and outcomes in 108 dogs with macroscopic solid tumours treated with a cyclical “QUAD” hypofractionated palliative-intent radiation therapy protocol. Median QUAD dose was 14 Gy (14–16 Gy). Median total dose was 28 Gy (14–48 Gy). Clinical benefit rate was 93%, with median onset of subjective palliation 21 days after the first QUAD, lasting a median of 134 days. Tumour volumetric objective response was assessed with CT prior to the third QUAD in 36 dogs, with stable disease in 24 dogs (67%) and partial response in 9 dogs (25%). Sinonasal and oral were the most common tumour locations in 32 and 30 dogs, respectively. Median progression-free survival was 153 days (95% CI 114–200). Median overall survival was 212 days (95% CI 152–259). Number of QUAD cycles completed, clinical benefit achieved, anti-inflammatory received, total radiation dose, time to maximum clinical benefit, and response duration were positively associated with progression-free and overall survival. Acute toxicities were observed in 15 dogs (14%) with 3 high-grade (grade 3) toxicities (3%). Low-grade (grade 1 and 2) late skin and ocular toxicities were observed in 31 dogs (29%), predominantly leukotrichia, alopecia, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and cataracts. This report demonstrates that QUAD radiation is an alternative protocol to be considered for palliation of dogs with inoperable or advanced stage solid tumours.  相似文献

A 9-year-old male Rottweiler was presented to the Veterinary Medical Hospital Montenegro, Porto, Portugal with a large mass medial to the left stifle and radiographic signs of bone lysis involving the proximal tibia, fibula, and distal femur. A fine-needle aspiration was obtained from left popliteal lymph node, which was markedly enlarged. Cytologic examination revealed a highly cellular sample consisting of pleomorphic cells with marked anisocytosis and anisokaryosis and other criteria of malignancy. Some cells contained intracytoplasmic, granular, dark brown material, consistent with hemosiderin. Histologic evaluation of the surgically-excised lymph node revealed a neoplastic proliferation of histiocytic cells, with marked pleomorphism; occasional cells were erythrophagocytic. Mitotic figures were frequently observed, and many were atypical. Histologic findings were consistent with malignant histiocytosis. Necropsy examination confirmed the diagnosis of malignant histiocytosis with systemic involvement affecting most organs examined. This case of malignant histiocytosis case had an atypical clinical presentation, mimicking a musculoskeletal disorder. It underlines the importance of cytology as a simple, inexpensive, rapid and noninvasive complementary exam in routine clinical practice that can permit early diagnosis of the disease and timely selection of the most adequate therapy.  相似文献
