● Virtual joint centers on N agronomy were established between UK and China. ● Key themes were improving NUE for fertilizers, utilizing livestock manures, and soil health. ● Improved management practices and technologies were identified and assessed. ● Fertilizer emissions and improved manure management are key targets for mitigation. Two virtual joint centers for nitrogen agronomy were established between the UK and China to facilitate collaborative research aimed at improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in agricultural production systems and reducing losses of reactive N to the environment. Major focus areas were improving fertilizer NUE, use of livestock manures, soil health, and policy development and knowledge exchange. Improvements to fertilizer NUE included attention to application rate in the context of yield potential and economic considerations and the potential of improved practices including enhanced efficiency fertilizers, plastic film mulching and cropping design. Improved utilization of livestock manures requires knowledge of the available nutrient content, appropriate manure processing technologies and integrated nutrient management practices. Soil carbon, acidification and biodiversity were considered as important aspects of soil health. Both centers identified a range of potential actions that could be taken to improve N management, and the research conducted has highlighted the importance of developing a systems-level approach to assessing improvement in the overall efficiency of N management and avoiding unintended secondary effects from individual interventions. Within this context, the management of fertilizer emissions and livestock manure at the farm and regional scales appear to be particularly important targets for mitigation.  相似文献

The effect of wind on the extension growth of young Pinus contortawas investigated using a controlled environment wind tunnel.Extension rates of leader and lateral shoots were reduced byabout 20 per cent by high wind speed. The ratio of the finallength of the laterals to that of the leaders (‘apicalcontrol’) was unaffected, as was the radial growth ofstems. Water potentials were slightly higher in plants subjectto high wind. In another experiment, rates of needle extensionwere reduced 30 per cent by wind. The experiments are discussedin relation to field observations by others and it is arguedthat wind is a potent ecological factor adversely affectingtree growth.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions make up a significant part of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. There is an urgent need to identify new approaches to the mitigation of these emissions with emerging technology. In this short review four approaches to precision managements of agricultural systems are described based on examples of work being undertaken in the UK and New Zealand. They offer the opportunity for N2O mitigation without any reduction in productivity. These approaches depend upon new sensor technology, modeling and spatial information with which to make management decisions and interventions that can both improve agricultural productivity and environmental protection.  相似文献

The onset of adult plant resistance (APR) to Puccinia striiformis was examined in seven Australian wheat cultivars under field conditions and in 14 cultivars under controlled environmental conditions. In most cultivars under field conditions the percentage leaf area affected by stripe rust at mid-tillering (GS 22–26; third leaf) was significantly less ( P < 0.05) than on the more susceptible cultivar Teal. The expression of APR was more conspicuous during tillering to node formation; at these growth stages chlorosis and/or necrosis developed in association with rust colonies on the most resistant cultivars. Under controlled conditions, the primary leaves of all cultivars except Olympic and Flinders displayed some resistance when compared with Teal (lower infection types, longer latent periods and/or less percentage leaf area affected). Studies on the spread of stripe rust from infection foci established in selected cultivars in the field indicated that the resistance detected at early growth stages in Suneca in controlled environmental studies also appeared to be effective in the field.  相似文献

1. The distribution of effort for the most frequently used mobile demersal gears in the Irish Sea was examined and their potential to disturb different benthic communities calculated. Fishing effort data, expressed as the number of days fished, was collated for all fleets operating in the Irish Sea in 1994. For each gear, the percentage of the seabed swept by those parts of the gear that penetrate the seabed was calculated. 2. For all gears, the majority of fishing effort was concentrated in the northern Irish Sea. Effort was concentrated in three main locations: on the muddy sediments between Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man (otter and Nephrops trawling); off the north Wales, Lancashire and Cumbrian coast (beam trawling); the area surrounding the Isle of Man (scallop dredging). 3. In some areas, e.g. between Anglesey and the Isle of Man, the use of scallop dredges and beam trawls was coincident. A comparative experimental study revealed that scallop dredges caught much less by-catch than beam trawls. Multivariate analysis revealed that both gears modified the benthic community in a similar manner, causing a reduction in the abundance of most epifaunal species. 4. Although beam trawling disturbed the greatest area of seabed in 1994, the majority of effort occurred on grounds which supported communities that are exposed to high levels of natural disturbance. Scallop dredging, Nephrops and otter trawling were concentrated in areas that either have long-lived or poorly studied communities. The latter highlights the need for more detailed knowledge of the distribution of sublittoral communities that are vulnerable to fishing disturbance. ©British Crown Copyright 1996.  相似文献

A rabbit was immunized with a homogenate of spore balls (cystosori) of Spongospora subterranea which also contained some potato tuber debris. The resultant polyclonal antiserum contained antibodies which reacted against extracts of spore balls and healthy tubers. Antibodies to the tuber debris were removed by incubating the blood serum with an extract from a S. subterranea -free tuber. In enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the γ-globulin fraction of the absorbed antiserum reacted with dilute tuber extracts containing the equivalent of as little as 0·08 spore balls per ml. The reaction with spore balls was inhibited in high concentrations of tuber sap. Extracts of peel from symptomless tubers which had been stored in contact with scabbed tubers also reacted with the γ-globulin, presumably because the symptomless tubers became contaminated with spore balls. However, spore balls in soil were only weakly detected when high numbers were present. The γ-globulin did not react with the plasmodial stage of the pathogen, or with 15 other micro-organisms tested, including resting spores of Plasmodiophora brassicae.  相似文献

Subjecting young plants of P. contorta to continuous shakingoutdoors caused a 20 per cent reduction in the extension ofleading and lateral shoots, and a 10 per cent reduction in theextension of needles. The ratio of the final length of the lateralsto that of the leaders (‘apical control’) was unaffectedby shaking as was the radial growth of the stems. Shaking foronly 24 minutes per day had almost the same effect as shakingcontinuously. Shaking in 1978 had no effect on fascicles producedin 1979 or on the response to shaking in 1979. The effect ofshaking could not be attributed to an induced water stress.To see whether the shaking treatment affected cell divisionor cell expansion an examination was made of the pith parenchyma.The shorter stems from the shaken treatment contained fewercells than the controls, though cell size was not much affected.The results of the shaking experiment were very similar to theresults of the wind tunnel experiment described in the previouspaper.  相似文献
