The response of zinc (Zn) deficiency on reproductive yield and recovery through foliar application of Zn was determined in black gram, an important edible legume in India. Results revealed that foliar spray of Zn [0.01 and 0.5% zinc sulfate (ZnSO4)] improved not only the flowering, pollen producing capacity, pollen viability, stigma-receptivity and pollen-stigma interaction but also the yield parameters like number, size and weight of pods and seeds. Zinc deficiency induced changes in pollen grain structure, activity of esterase and poor stigmatic exudation leading to improper pollen-stigma interaction, which seem to be the main cause of poor fertility and decreased seed yield. Foliar application of 0.5% ZnSO4 after bud formation was most beneficial not only for reproductive yield but also seed Zn content.  相似文献

Alternaria leaf spot (ALS) caused by Alternaria carthami Chowdhury can cause yield loss up to 90% in safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) under severe conditions. Even though a definite source of ALS resistance is not available in cultivated species, a few of the wild species, viz. C. palaestinus and C. lantaus, are known to be tolerant to ALS. Therefore, an attempt was made to introgress Alternaria resistance from these species into cultivated species. F1-F8 generations of crosses (PI537632 × C. palaestinus), (C. palaestinus × PI537632), (“Nira” × C. palaestinus) and ([MS 6(O) × C. lanatus] × C. palaestinus) were screened against ALS. ALS infection (%) was recorded in field and quantified using Windias Leaf Image Analysis system. Detached leaf technique was used in laboratory to confirm resistance in interspecific selections. Six resistant and 29 moderately resistant interspecific lines resembling mostly cultivated species were developed. Inheritance of ALS resistance indicated involvement of multiple minor alleles having small effects on resistance. The identified resistant lines could provide potential source of resistance to ALS for safflower breeding programmes.  相似文献

During the development of parking lots and pedestrian areas, mature trees are often removed from the site and replaced with saplings after development is completed. This research aims to study the possibility of using pervious porous concrete as an alternative pavement that may help to keep existing mature trees, and all the benefits they can provide, alive after site development. Three different pavement treatments: (1) no pavement; (2) impervious standard concrete; and, (3) pervious porous concrete were compared over 2 years to test their ability to modify growth and leaf gas exchange of existing 15–18-year-old American sweetgum (Liquidamber styraciflua) trees. Soil water and temperature dynamics of the pervious plots were closely correlated with those in the control plots. Plots treated with pervious concrete had greater soil water content than plots with standard concrete in the deeper soil layers in some seasons, but not during the summer. Tree diameter (dbh) relative growth rates were similar across the three pavement types. There was no effect of the treatments on leaf water potential or leaf gas exchange. The data presented in this paper suggest that pervious porous concrete does not provide additional benefits in ensuring growth and survival of pre-existing mature trees in new urban developments.  相似文献
