Conventional feedstuffs in Brazil are expensive, which has led to the search for less conventional cheaper and locally available feedstuffs. Thus, this study was carried out to determine the dietary effect of dry sweet potato vines (SPV) on the performance and some carcass characteristics of rabbits. A total of twenty‐seven weaned White New Zealand rabbits (14 male and 13 female) 35 days old with an average initial weight of 755 g were allocated into three treatments. Nine rabbits were assigned to each treatment in a completely randomized design. Three diets were formulated to similar protein and energy levels: 0SPV – diet without inclusion of dry sweet potato vines; 10SPV – diet with 10% alfalfa hay replaced by dry sweet potato vines; and 15SPV – diet with 15% of alfalfa hay replaced by dry sweet potato vines. The experiment lasted for 49 days during which data for feed intake and body weight were recorded. The daily feed intake ranged from 73.17 to 78.02 g; daily weight gain from 22.32 to 23.17 g; feed conversion ratio (FCR) from 3.16 to 3.49 and final live weight ranged from 1839.44 to 1880.55 g. None of the evaluated performance parameters as well as carcass weight, heart weight and percentages of fat and protein in meat were significantly affected by any of the tested dietary treatments. However, the liver weight was statistically lower in animals fed the diets containing 10% of SPV, mainly due to lower glucose content. Glycogen within the tissue, did not differ significantly among treatments. It was therefore concluded that up to 15% of SPV can successfully be included in the diet of rabbits as a cheaper replacement for alfalfa hay without adversely affecting performance.  相似文献

Three varieties of a popular African cichlid aquarium species, Pseudotropheus zebra, from 2 tropical fish farms in east central Florida were submitted for diagnostic evaluation because of the development of multifocal green lesions. The percentage of infected fish in these populations varied from 5 to 60%. Fish were otherwise clinically normal. Microscopic examination of fresh and fixed lesions confirmed algal dermatitis, with light invasion of several internal organs in each group. A different alga was identified from each farm. Fish from farm A were infected with Chlorochytrium spp, whereas fish from farm B were infected with Scenedesmus spp. Because of the numbers of fish involved, bath treatments to remove the algae from affected fish from farm B were attempted, with different dosages of several common algaecides including copper sulfate pentahydrate, diuron, and sodium chloride. However, none of these treatments were successful, possibly because of the location of the algae under the scales and within the dermis, and also because of the sequestering effect of the granulomatous response. To our knowledge, this is the first report of algal dermatitis in ornamental cichlids, as well as the first report of Scenedesmus spp infection in any fish.  相似文献

Soybeans contain oil bodies that are coated by a layer of oleosin proteins. In nature, this protein coating protects the oil bodies from environmental stresses and may be utilized by food manufacturers for the same purpose. In this study, oil bodies were extracted from soybean using an aqueous extraction method that involved blending, dispersion (pH 8.6), filtration, and centrifugation steps. The influence of NaCl (0-250 mM), thermal processing (30-90 degrees C, 20 min) and pH (2-8) on the properties and stability of the oil bodies was analyzed using zeta-potential, particle size, and creaming stability measurements. The extracted oil bodies were relatively small ( d 32 approximately 250 nm), and their zeta-potential went from around +12 mV to -20 mV as the pH was increased from 2 to 8, with an isoelectric point around pH 4. Lytechinus variegatus were fed two prepared feeds identical in composition except one contained only soybean protein and the other contained equal concentrations of fish and soybean protein. Feeding rate, defecation rate, passage time through the gut, apparent dry matter digestibility of protein and carbohydrate, and the production of gut tissue did not differ significantly ( P > 0.05) with feed type. Individuals about 50 mm in diameter and 60% wet body-weight consumed about 3-g wet weight of feed per day. Feeding rate decreased during the experiment, but defecation rate did not. The throughput rate was two days with considerable mixing of feed in the gut. Fecal production ceased two days after cessation of feeding. Only trace amounts of feed remained in the gut three days after feed was not available. The apparent dry matter digestibility was 62% for soluble protein and 35% for soluble carbohydrate for both feeds. The apparent dry matter digestibility of ash was 19% for the feed with soybean meal alone, and 11% for soybean and fish meal. After amputation, freshwater planarians properly regenerate a head or tail from the resulting anterior or posterior wound. The mechanisms that differentiate anterior from posterior and direct the replacement of the appropriate missing body parts are unknown. We found that in the planarian Schmidtea mediterranea, RNA interference (RNAi) of beta-catenin or dishevelled causes the inappropriate regeneration of a head instead of a tail at posterior amputations. Conversely, RNAi of the beta-catenin antagonist adenomatous polyposis coli results in the regeneration of a tail at anterior wounds. In addition, the silencing of beta-catenin is sufficient to transform the tail of uncut adult animals into a head. We suggest that beta-catenin functions as a molecular switch to specify and maintain anteroposterior identity during regeneration and homeostasis in planarians.  相似文献

The analysis of natural contact interfaces between protein subunits and between proteins has disclosed some general rules governing their association. We have applied these rules to produce a number of novel assemblies, demonstrating that a given protein can be engineered to form contacts at various points of its surface. Symmetry plays an important role because it defines the multiplicity of a designed contact and therefore the number of required mutations. Some of the proteins needed only a single side-chain alteration in order to associate to a higher-order complex. The mobility of the buried side chains has to be taken into account. Four assemblies have been structurally elucidated. Comparisons between the designed contacts and the results will provide useful guidelines for the development of future architectures.  相似文献

Nitrogen Dynamics Under Excrement Patches in Pastures Soil mineral nitrogen contents in relation to time were measured under excrement patches on three pastures in Lower Saxony. The highest values were found under patches of urine on a pasture grazed by suckling cows. The herbage dry matter of that pasture showed a crude protein content of 19 %. The contents of mineral nitrogen under urine patches were less on a comparable pasture utilized by milking cows. The concentrations were still less on a cow grazed pasture, which remained unfertilized over a period of ten years. The content of NH4-N under urine affected areas increased distinctly in the whole soil profile, within one day of deposition. High NO3-N concentrations were found even in deeper soil layers after one week. The nitrogen concentrations under patches of urine approximated the values under not urine affected parts of the pasture within three months. The increments of mineral nitrogen under patches of faeces were insignificant.  相似文献

Day-old domesticated Muscovy ducklings (Cairina moshata) were given the trichothecene mycotoxins T-2 toxin or diacetoxyscirpenol at 0.25, 0.5, or 1 micrograms/g of feed for 7 days. All concentrations of both toxins caused characteristic dose-related lesions on the roof of the oral cavity of the birds. Muscovy ducklings showed these signs in a shorter time (less than 16 hours in some cases) and at a lower feed concentration of these trichothecenes than did other avian species in similar studies.  相似文献
