Chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated timber waste is hazardous for the environment due to the leakage of copper, chromium as well as arsenic to the soil and the groundwater. The study concentrates on electrodialytic removal of copper and chromium and their migration behavior in the wood chips and sawdust matrix in an applied electric field. The method is based on the movement of the charged particles in the electric field, enhanced by incubation with oxalic acid (2.5% w/w) and various placement of the contaminated waste in the electrodialytic cell area to analyze the distribution of chemicals in the proposed matrix. The method was tested in laboratory scale experiments where the CCA contaminated wood chips and clean sawdust were placed in various places of the cell, i.e., adjacent to the cathode and anode compartments and in the mid-section of the cell. The duration of each experiment was 14 days and the current was kept constant at 40 mA. During the electrodialytic treatment negative copper and chromium compounds were mostly found in the anolyte or accumulated in the anion-exchange membrane. The amount of positive compounds found in the catholyte is negligible. The placement of contaminated chips close to the anode and cathode showed that copper and chromium moved towards the positively charged anode. If placed in the mid section of the cell, significant amount of contaminants remained bound to the wood matrix or slightly migrated towards the anode. To predict the formation of copper and chromium species at certain pH and Eh, the computer-modeling program MTDATA to generate Pourbaix diagrams was used.  相似文献

The effect of different commercial modified food starch carrier materials on the flavor retention of the essential oil (EO) of peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) during spray drying and storage was evaluated. The obtained results revealed that the emulsification and encapsulation efficiencies of peppermint EO were higher for all n-octenyl succinic anhydride (OSAN)-modified starches as compared to those of hydrolyzed starches (dextrins). The compositions of pure, emulsified, and encapsulated peppermint EOs in different matrices were quite similar; however, some changes in the percentages of some individual compounds were observed. Larger differences in the compositions of surface oils from various encapsulation products were obtained. Flavor components were released at different rates by each of the encapsulated products. The aroma binding capacity of different modified starch matrices to lock EO droplets depends on the water activity, and the leakage of aromas from encapsulated powder products during storage increased with increasing water activity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine educational differences among people who consume foods containing fat in Finland and the Baltic countries. DESIGN: Data were collected from cross-sectional postal Finbalt Health Monitor surveys that were carried out in 1998, 2000 and 2002. SETTING: Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Lithuania. SUBJECTS: For each survey, nationally representative random samples of adults aged 20-64 years were drawn from population registers (Estonia, n = 3656; Finland, n = 9354, Latvia, n = 6015; Lithuania, n = 5944). RESULTS: Differences were revealed between the countries in the consumption of foods that contain fat. Finnish people consumed butter on bread, high-fat milk, meat and meat products, and vegetable oil for cooking less frequently than people in the Baltic countries. Cheese was most popular in Finland. Educational differences in fat-related food habits were examined by applying logistic regression analysis. A positive association was found between level of education and consumption of vegetable oil used in food preparation. Drinking high-fat milk was associated with low education in all countries. People with higher education tended to consume cheese more often. Educational patterns in the consumption of butter on bread and in the consumption of meat and meat products differed between countries. CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of foods containing fat was related to educational levels in all four countries. The diet of better-educated people was closer to recommendations for the consumption of saturated and unsaturated fats than the diet of people with lower level of education. The educational gradient was more consistent in Finland than in the Baltic countries. These existing educational differences in sources of fat consumed should be taken into account in the development of national cardiovascular disease prevention programmes.  相似文献

Fluxes of principal anions and cations with bulk and throughfall deposition during the growing period (April–September) were investigated for three years (2001–2003) at three sites differently exposed to the second biggest Lithuanian city – Kaunas. Fluxes of all investigated anions (SO4 2?, NO3 ? and Cl?) and most cations were found to be the highest in suburban area to compare with both – Rural and urban sites. The highest seasonal variability of monthly ion fluxes and the highest differences between throughfall and bulk fluxes (net throughfall) were recorded in suburban area. The highest throughfall enrichment by sulphur was detected in spring and the beginning of summer (April, May) in urban and especially in suburban sites. For nitrogen compounds (NO3 ?, NH4 +) positive net throughfall values were characteristic for urban and suburban sites and negative for rural site almost during the entire growing period. Uptake of NH4 + ions was detected to be much higher of that for nitrates in rural area (46% vs. 22%). The most intensive enrichment of throughfall fluxes by K+ ions took place during the summer time (May, June, July), however, intensity of potassium leaching at the same amount of precipitation was the highest in suburban area.  相似文献

Trace element-contaminated soils (TECSs) are one of the consequences of the past industrial development worldwide.Excessive exposure to trace elements (TEs) represents a permanent threat to ecosystems and humans worldwide owing to the capacity of metal(loid)s to cross the cell membranes of living organisms and of human epithelia,and their interference with cell metabolism.Quantification of TE bioavailability in soils is complicated due to the polyphasic and reactive nature of soil constituents.To unravel critical factors controlling soil TE bioavailability and to quantify the ecological toxicity of TECSs,TEs are pivotal for evaluating excessive exposure or deficiencies and controlling the ecological risks.While current knowledge on TE bioavailability and related cumulative consequences is growing,the lack of an integrated use of this concept still hinders its utilization for a more holistic view of ecosystem vulnerability and risks for human health.Bioavailability is not generally included in models for decision making in the appraisal of TECS remediation options.In this review we describe the methods for determining the TE bioavailability and technological developments,gaps in current knowledge,and research needed to better understand how TE bioavailability can be controlled by sustainable TECS management altering key chemical properties,which would allow policy decisions for environmental protection and risk management.  相似文献

A Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vaccine (Respisure, Pfizer AH) was tested for its effects on antibody formation, daily weight gain (DWG) in different growing periods, lung lesions and quality of meat (chemical composition, physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition). Two groups of conventional piglets were used for the investigation. One group of 11 females and 11 males was vaccinated intramuscularly at the age of 1 and 3 weeks. The other group of 22 piglets was left nonvaccinated as control. The results showed that antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae in the vaccinated group had been formed 14 days after the second vaccination and remained present till the end of the study at 147 days of age. In the nonvaccinated group, seroconversion started at 49 days of age and by the end of the study 10 out of 22 pigs had become seropositive. Vaccinated pigs achieved significantly higher daily weight gain (+30 g) and finishing body weight (+6.04 kg) than the nonvaccinated animals. In addition, the vaccinated pigs showed lesions involving 3.27% of the lung surface in average, while in the nonvaccinated pigs 9.04% of the lung surface was affected. Investigation of meat quality showed that the longissimus dorsi muscle of vaccinated pigs contained significantly lower percentage of fat (-0.63%) and its tryptophan/hydroxyproline ratio was significantly lower (-23.57) in comparison with the control animals. In addition, some other parameters also showed a favourable tendency, e.g. lean meat percentage was 0.91% higher, the protein content of the longissimus dorsi muscle was 0.35% higher, its water-binding capacity was also higher by 0.78%, its monounsaturated fatty acid concentration was 2.97% lower, while its polyunsaturated fatty acid content was 1.65% higher in the vaccinated pigs than in the nonvaccinated animals.  相似文献

The application of low-level direct electric current (0.15 mA cm?2) as an electrokinetic technique to treat copper-contaminated mesophilic anaerobic granular sludge was investigated. The sludge was obtained from a full scale UASB reactor treating paper-mill wastewater and was artificially contaminated by Cu(NO3)2 or CuEDTA2? with initial copper concentrations of 1000 mg . kg?1 wet sludge. The effect of different electrokinetic cell layouts, pH and EDTA concentrations on the migration of copper and iron during electrokinetic treatment were evaluated. Both, the pH of the sludge cake or the copper complexation with EDTA significantly affected the migration direction of copper. In an ‘open’ cell (sludge cake in direct contact with air), the highest copper mobility was observed at pH 2.5 in both Cu(NO3)2 or CuEDTA2? amended sludge. The highest copper accumulation was at the cathode (22 ± 2)% with CuEDTA2? as contaminant. In a ‘closed’ cell (sludge cake not in contact with air), the highest accumulation was obtained for CuEDTA2? at the anode and amounted to 4(± 0.5)% and 2(± 0.05)%, respectively, at a final pH of 4.2 and 7.7 in the sludge cake.  相似文献
