Ticks are important ectoparasites of domestic and wild animals, and tick infestations economically impact cattle production worldwide. Control of cattle tick infestations has been primarily by application of acaricides which has resulted in selection of resistant ticks and environmental pollution. Herein we discuss data from tick vaccine application in Australia, Cuba, Mexico and other Latin American countries. Commercial tick vaccines for cattle based on the Boophilus microplus Bm86 gut antigen have proven to be a feasible tick control method that offers a cost-effective, environmentally friendly alternative to the use of acaricides. Commercial tick vaccines reduced tick infestations on cattle and the intensity of acaricide usage, as well as increasing animal production and reducing transmission of some tick-borne pathogens. Although commercialization of tick vaccines has been difficult owing to previous constraints of antigen discovery, the expense of testing vaccines in cattle, and company restructuring, the success of these vaccines over the past decade has clearly demonstrated their potential as an improved method of tick control for cattle. Development of improved vaccines in the future will be greatly enhanced by new and efficient molecular technologies for antigen discovery and the urgent need for a tick control method to reduce or replace the use of acaricides, especially in regions where extensive tick resistance has occurred.  相似文献

A survey for prevalence of Corynebacterium suis infection in boars was conducted on a Minnesota farm and at a slaughter plant. Preputial swab specimens were streaked onto Columbia colistin-nalidixic blood agar to which metronidazole (50 mg/L) had been added. Of 97 boars surveyed at a slaughterhouse, 32 (32.9%) were culture-positive, whereas 23 of 38 (60.5%) boars from 1 farm were culture-positive. The lower isolation rate at a slaughterhouse was attributed to the fact that these boars ejaculated before sampling.  相似文献

Lungs from 113 pneumonic pigs were examined for Pasteurella multocida. The lungs were smeared directly onto blood agar and homogenized in brain-heart infusion broth and then inoculated intraperitoneally in mice. Pasteurella multocida isolates were typed for serotypes A (by hyaluronidase inhibition of capsule) and D (by acriflavine autoagglutination). Strains were tested for toxin production by intradermal injection of 0.2 ml of filtered 24-hour culture supernatants into guinea pigs. Most lungs (70.8%) yielded isolations. Most isolants (87.5%) were type A and 12.5% were type D. Of the type D strains, 80% were toxigenic. Of the type A isolants, 18.2% were toxigenic.  相似文献

The aim of the Third International Workshop on Swine Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens (CD workshop), supported by the Veterinary Immunology Committee (VIC) of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), was to standardize the assignment of monoclonal antibodies (mAb) reactive with porcine leukocyte differentiation antigens and to define new antibody clusters, using nomenclature in accordance with human and ruminant CD nomenclature, as agreed at the summary meeting of the Second International Swine CD Workshop in Davis, 1995: only mAb with proven reactivity for the orthologous porcine gene product or cross-reactivity for the human gene products, were given the full CD nomenclature, all other allocations were prefixed with "w". As in previous workshops, the overall organization was entrusted to the chair and first author, with support by the chair of the previous workshop and second author. In addition to the existing 26 pig leukocyte CD/SWC determinants established in previous workshops, this workshop established/confirmed another 11 CDs for pig leukocytes, identified by a total of 21 mAb: CD11R1 (2 mAb), CD11R2 (1 mAb), CD11R3 (4 mAb), wCD40 (1 mAb), wCD46 (4 mAb), wCD47 (3 mAb), wCD49d (1 mAb), CD61 (1 mAb), wCD92 (1 mAb), wCD93 (1 mAb) and CD163 (2 mAb).  相似文献

Application of wood ash can potentially improve the fertility of acid soils and the nutritional status of crops. However, there is limited information about the effectiveness of this practice with fruit trees. The application of wood ash as a fertilizer in a kiwifruit plantation—both with and without fertigation/irrigation—was compared with that of a conventional fertigation program in a completely randomized field experiment on an acid soil in northwest (NW) Spain. The effects on plant nutritional status and on fruit yield, as well as environmental effects, were evaluated over a period of 2 y. The application of wood ash led to modest increases in soil pH and extractable nutrients (phosphorus, P; calcium, Ca; magnesium, Mg; potassium, K; boron, B). However, no consistent effects in foliar nutrient concentrations were found. Ash application led to an increase of up to 45% in the number of fruits produced, which was mainly attributed to the inputs of Ca and Mg. Although moderate increases in soil available manganese (Mn) and nickel (Ni) after ash application were recorded, there were no changes in heavy‐metal concentrations in leaves or fruits. From the results of the study it can be concluded that wood ash can be used to improve the growth conditions of kiwi vines on acidic soils. Wood ash should be applied at rates adapted to the liming needs of the soil, while also taking into account the chemical composition of the ash.  相似文献

A total of 14 antibodies were found to label resting and/or activated swine platelets. Six recognized CD previously characterized for swine (CD29, CD41/61 and CD46). One had been characterized for human cells (CD47). Two antibodies with CD14 and SLA class I specificity suggested by the donor as well as five blind antibodies were also positive on platelets. One antibody appeared to recognize the swine homologue to human CD47, and four remained unclustered.  相似文献

The overall aim of this study was to identify potential associations between aphids and plants as reservoirs of entomophthoralean fungi. A survey of weeds associated with wheat field borders in two different localities was performed over two years, from April 2010 to April 2012 in the Pampeana central region, Argentina. On each sampling date, five individuals of each plant species were randomly selected, and healthy and infected aphids were collected and quantified once a month. The taxonomic identities of both aphid hosts and entomophthoralean fungi were established. Aphid–fungus associations identified as favorable for inclusion in conservation biological control strategies in borders of wheat crops are the following: Sonchus oleraceus (L.)/Hyperomyzus carduellinus (Theobald), Uroleucon sonchi (L.)/Pandora neoaphidis (Remaudière & Hennebert) Humber; S. oleraceus (L.)/H. carduellinus (Theobald)/Zoophthora radicans (Brefeld) Batko; Lamium amplexicaule (L.)/Cryptomyzus korschelti Bôrner/P. neoaphidis, Z. radicans, Entomophthora planchoniana Cornu; Foeniculum vulgare (Miller)/Dysaphis apiifolia (Theobald)/Z. radicans; Morrenia brachystephana Griseb/Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe/P. neoaphidis and Brassica rapa L./Brevicoryne brassicae (L.)/P. neoaphidis.  相似文献

Only recently have erosion models begun to be used in research work in Cuba, specifically the USLE and the thematic cartography of factors in a GIS framework without using a specific model. It therefore becomes necessary to include simulation models for karst regions that make possible an integral assessment of the specific types of soil erosion in those environments and take into consideration the effects of climate change in soil management systems. Morphometric analysis of karst doline absorption forms in regions of La Habana Province in 1986, 1997, and 2009 allowed the characterisation and application of the Morgan Morgan Finney (MMF) conceptual empirical erosion model in the Country for the first time. The results showed previously unreported losses of 12·3–13·7 t of soil ha −1 y−1, which surpasses the permissible erosion threshold. Furthermore, it clearly shows the unsustainable trend of Red Ferralitic and Ferrasol Rhodic (World Reference Base) soils use. The model applied considered the effects of extreme rainfall events associated with climate change in recent years. The results found have led to strategies for coping with future climate change in each scenario and have made it possible to evaluate the consequences. Fifty-six tumorigenic Spanish grapevine strains of Agrobacterium spp. were tested for biovar classification, pathogenicity on several hosts, opine utilization, 16S rRNA gene sequencing and PCR amplifications using five primer sets targeting chromosomal and Ti plasmid genes. Fifty of them belonged to A. vitis (biovar 3), three to A. tumefaciens (biovar 1) and three to A. rhizogenes (biovar 2). All strains were tumorigenic on grapevines. Most A. vitis strains were also pathogenic on tomato and tobacco plants, while the three A. tumefaciens strains were only pathogenic on grapevine. Although most A. vitis strains used octopine, 12 utilized neither octopine nor nopaline. 16S rRNA gene sequencing clearly distinguished between strains belonging to the three species. Those of A. vitis could be further divided into three chromosomal backgrounds according to their 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences. No universal primer pair was found for the detection of all three Agrobacterium species isolated from grapevine. DNA from all A. vitis strains was amplified with the chromosomally-encoded pehA primer pair. In both A. vitis and A. tumefaciens a correlation was observed between the amplifications obtained using the tmr and the virA Ti-plasmid-targeting primer pairs. Three types of Ti plasmid were found in A. vitis strains according to their PCR amplifications and opine utilization profiles. A given chromosomal background harboured only one type of Ti plasmid within the strains from each analysed sample, showing a strong association between chromosomal backgrounds and Ti plasmids in A. vitis .  相似文献
