SUMMARY Twenty-four of 57 calves fed a diet containing 33% cotton seed meal (CSM) died between 7 and 15 weeks of age. Initial deaths were not accompanied by premonitory signs, but after CSM withdrawal most calves developed rough coats, anorexia, weakness, ascites and subcutaneous oedema. Those that died had large volumes of serous fluid in the body cavities, hard livers of ‘nutmeg’ appearance, and pulmonary congestion. Histopathologically the livers showed periacinar necrosis in acute cases and periacinar fibrosis in chronic cases. Lungs from several calves had oedema, haemosiderosis and fibrosis in some pulmonary vessels. Atrophy of myocardial fibres was present in most cases. The concentration of free gossypol in the diet was 100 to 220 mg/kg. Ante-mortem and post-mortem findings supported a diagnosis of gossypol poisoning. The deaths continued for 4 weeks after withdrawal of CSM from the diet.  相似文献

Oleosin, a unique structural protein anchoring onto the surface of seed oil bodies by its central hydrophobic domain, stabilizes these lipid-storage organelles as discrete entities. Stable artificial oil bodies have been successfully constituted with native or recombinant oleosins. In this study, recombinant sesame oleosin with 12 residues stepwise truncated from its central hydrophobic domain of 72 residues was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, was purified to homogeneity, and was used for the constitution. Artificial oil bodies constituted by truncated oleosins with the central hydrophobic domain longer than 36 residues were as stable as native sesame oil bodies, and those constituted by truncated oleosins lacking more than half of the original central hydrophobic domain inclined to coalesce upon collision or aggregation.  相似文献

Chlamydiosis in workers at a duck farm and processing plant   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
SUMMARY An outbreak of chlamydiosis was Investigated in workers at a duck farm and processing plant during winter 1989. Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from ducks, but there was little evidence of clinical chlamydiosis in the ducks. Serological tests showed that 76% of workers had been exposed to Infection, 12% recently, 16% had not been exposed and 8% had inconclusive test results. There was a strong association (P < 0.05) between years of employment and exposure to Infection. Infection appeared to be contracted during the first year of employment. Measures were Implemented to reduce shed contamination and control rodents and wild birds. At the same time, ducks were medicated, the processing plant was modified, work practices were altered and workers were advised about chlamydiosis to reduce the risk of human infection.  相似文献

The pathology of Johne''s disease in sheep   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The clinical, gross and histopathological findings in 50 sheep affected with Johne's disease are described. Clinically 90% were emaciated and 20% showed severe diarrhoea. On necropsy there was thickening of the walls of the intestines, particularly of the ileum, caecum and less frequently the jejunum, but in 36% of sheep the changes were only mild. Histologically there was a granulomatous enteritis, typhlitis and colitis, with the most severe changes in the terminal ileum. High numbers of acid-fast organisms were present in the terminal ileum in over 70% of sheep. Mycobacterium paratuberculosis was cultured from only 8% of the sheep examined.  相似文献

A cDNA fragment encoding an acidic pectin methylesterase (PME) of jelly fig achene was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris under the control of the glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase promoter. The recombinant PME was produced as a secretory protein by N-terminal fusion of a cleavable prepropeptide for signal trafficking, and thus easily harvested from the culture medium. Compared with native N-glycosylated PME (38 kDa) purified from jelly fig achenes, this recombinant PME (45 kDa) appeared to be hyperglycosylated. Activity staining indicated that the recombinant PME was functionally active. Yet the hyperglycosylated recombinant PME possessed thermostability and enzymatic capability over a broad pH range equivalent to those of the native PME. The success of functional production of this acidic jelly fig PME in P. pastoris has significantly broadened its applications in industry.  相似文献

Self-Assembled Smectic Phases in Rod-Coil Block Copolymers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rod-coil block copolymers are self-assembling polymers that combine the physics of orientational ordering of rodlike polymers and the microphase separation of coil-coil block copolymers. Several new solid-state morphologies were observed in a series of anionically synthesized model poly(hexyl isocyanate-b-styrene) rod-coil diblock copolymers examined by transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction. The rod-coils formed smectic C-like and O-like morphologies with domain sizes ranging from tens of nanometers to almost 1 micrometer. Both structural and orientational changes were found for increasing rod volume fractions. In addition, some morphologies exhibited spontaneous long-range orientational order over many tens of micrometers.  相似文献
