Biomonitoring of the local population and environmental monitoring in eastern Croatia have revealed abnormalities in metal and metalloid distribution that could be related to war activities during the 1990s. The goal of this study was to determine whether there are differences in the concentrations of metals and metalloids by comparing locations of high and low-intensity combat activity; we also evaluated a possible connection between metal contamination in soil and in humans. We sampled 14 locations and measured the concentrations of 20 war related metals and metalloids (Al, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Si, Sr, U, V and Zn). The results of principal components analysis showed two main clusters: locations Dopsin and Dalj (both characterized by high-intensity combat activity), where the concentrations of most elements (except Hg) were increased. Although the concentrations of metals and metalloids in cabbage samples collected in eastern Croatia did not exceed the maximum allowed values, the results of our study confirmed existance of environmental ‘hotspot’ with higher concentrations of war metals and metalloids. Our findings indicate that there is a possible common source and mechanism of transferring metals from the environment to the population.  相似文献

This comprehensive field survey on indigenous European chub (Squalius cephalus L.) presents, for the first time, site-specific variability of trace metal concentrations in the gut content, gastrointestinal tissue and two gastrointestinal sub-cellular fractions, operationally defined as metal-sensitive fraction (S50, which was isolated at 50,000?×?g and contains total water soluble proteins), and metal detoxified fraction (heat-treated S50 (HT S50), which contains heat-stable proteins like metallothioneins). At five sampling sites along the Sava River in Croatia 1 to 5-year-old chub were collected in the post-spawning period (September) in order to estimate if metal concentrations in fish intestine are related to their levels in the gut content or fish age. Concentrations of essential metals (Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn) and non-essential Cd decrease in the gut content as follows: Fe > Mn > Zn > Cu > Cd, while in the gastrointestinal tissue: Zn > Fe > Cu ?? Mn > Cd. Observed difference in metal abundance between the gut content and gastrointestinal tissue points to the selective metal absorption in fish intestine. Relationship among metal concentrations in the gastrointestinal tissue and two sub-cellular fractions (S50/HT S50) is significant for all analysed metals, with Spearman correlation coefficients (r) at p?<?0.01 for Zn 0.84/0.73, Cu 0.73/0.73, Fe 0.62/0.58, Mn 0.81/0.78, Cd 0.81/0.82. Site-specific differences point to the age-related increase of gastrointestinal Cu, Mn and Cd towards the downstream sites, while significant correlation between metal concentrations in the gut content and fish age exists only for Mn. In the sub-cellular gastrointestinal fractions, site-specific differences were not recorded on total water-soluble protein and metallothionein concentrations, which might be ascribed to the constitutional level.  相似文献

Allium test has already been used to determine cytotoxicity of waste drilling fluids. In the present work the cytotoxicity of four pure chemicals (Defoamex, Idthin 400, Magco Thin and Slick Pipe) was investigated. Those chemicals are components of drilling fluids, therefore, they are usually constituents of oil and gas industry waste waters. The tested chemicals were prepared in 1:9 dilution and cytotoxic effects on root-tip meristem ofAllium ascalonicum were analysed after 24-, 48- and 72-hour-treatments. All samples showed cytotoxicity which was proved by cytogenetic parameters such as inhibition of mitotic activity and increase of mitotic abnormalities and chromosomal aberrations in comparison with the control. Almost all mitotic abnormalities induced by four chemicals tested were the result of disturbed spindle mechanisms accompanied with stickiness. Slick Pipe revealed the most prominent mitodepressive effect and induced a high number of abnormalities. It caused a significant decrease of mitotic activity and increase of mitotic abnormalities after all three treatment durations, while chemicals Defoamex and Magco Thin showed a significant decrease of mitotic activity only after 72-hour-treatment. Chemicals Defoamex, Idthin 400 and Magco Thin revealed a significant increase of mitotic abnormalities after 48- and 72-hour-treatments.  相似文献

This is the first study on concentrations of war related elements in dandelion from war effected areas of Croatia. Previous research done on human subjects, soil and water has shown abnormalities in distribution of war associated metals and metalloids in war affected areas compared with peacetime locations. Dandelion, as wide spread perennial herb, is considered as very useful plant in determination of trace elements pollution in various ecosystems. Aim of the research was to try to determine whether concentrations of war related elements (Al, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Si, Sr, U, V and Zn) concentrations in dandelion (Taraxacum officinalle) samples in areas of high intensity of combat activities differ from areas of low intensity of combat activities, and to clarify possible contamination in dandelion as an indicator (and edible) plant with it's role in food chain. Leaves of the dandelion were taken at locations (28 locations at 11 settlements) were divided into two major subgroups: high and low intensity of combat activities, at the locations of major explosions, former minefields, army trenches?…?Analysis was done using ICP-MS and data was interpreted using Mann Whitney test and PCA. Results have shown that there is difference in concentration of war related elements among different locations, with generally, higher concentrations of war elements in war areas compared with control group. Maximum concentrations of As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Li, Mg, Ni, P, Pb, Sb, Si, Sr, U, V and Zn were higher in areas of high intensity of combat activities. When results are compared with similar researches, overall presence of metals and metalloids is legally acceptable, however, there are differences in concentrations between war and peacetime locations.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate antioxidant capacity of nine Fabaceae species collected on the mountains of Serbia and Montenegro. Antioxidant assays with various reaction mechanisms were used, including total phenolic content by Folin-Ciocalteu, DPPH radical scavenging capacity, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) values by ABTS radical cation and inhibition of liposome peroxidation. The investigated plants exhibited strong antioxidant capacity in all the tested methods, and among them, Lathyrus binatus, Trifolium pannonicum, and Anthyllis aurea were found to be the most active.  相似文献

Diatomaceous earth (DE) deposits from regions of central and southeastern Europe were evaluated for their insecticidal efficacy against Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae) and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) in comparison with the commercially available DE formulation SilicoSec. The effects of temperature, RH, grain commodity (wheat, barley, maize, rice), application method (spraying vs. dusting) were evaluated. FYROM, a DE from the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, was the most effective of the DE deposits for grain treatment, whereas the least effective was from Greece (named Crete). However, for surface treatment, Slovenia was the most effective followed by Elassona 1 and Begora. Increase of temperature increased DE efficacy, while the reverse was noted with the increase of RH. Furthermore, the DEs were more effective in barley or wheat than in maize or rice. Neither the mined DEs nor SilicoSec were able to suppress progeny production of the tested species after previous exposure on the treated commodities. Generally, dust application of DEs was more efficacious than spraying against S. oryzae and T. confusum. However, spraying of wheat significantly reduced the bulk density (test weight) compared to dusting. For surface treatment, after 1 d of exposure, Slovenia was the most effective of the mined DEs followed by Elassona 1 and Begora, whereas after 6 d of exposure the mortality was almost complete (>99%) with all three DEs. More than 6 d of exposure were required for an effective control of T. confusum adults with the remainder of the mined DEs.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The use of diatomaceous earths (DEs) provides a promising alternative to the use of contact insecticides in stored‐product IPM. Geographical origin and the physical properties of a given DE may affect its insecticidal activity. In the present study, DE samples were collected from different locations of south‐eastern Europe, and their efficacy was evaluated in the laboratory against Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) (Coleoptera: Cucujiidae), Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae). In addition, three fractions comprising particles of different size were obtained from each DE sample and assessed with regards to their effectiveness against the above stored‐product insect pests. RESULTS: DE from the Greek region of Elassona was the most effective against C. ferrugineus and S. oryzae, whereas the DE Kolubara 518, mined in the Serbian region of Kolubara, was the most effective against R. dominica. Smaller particles were more effective than larger particles against the three tested species, although significant differences in the efficacy of fractions containing particles of 0–150 µm and particles with sizes of < 45 µm were not always recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Deposits from south‐eastern Europe appeared to be very effective against the tested species, and therefore this region should be further evaluated as a source of development of commercial products. Particle size is a physical property that should always be taken into account during the DE manufacturing process, as it can strongly influence the insecticidal action of a given product. The essential oil from the aerial parts of Seseli annuum, wild-growing in Serbia, was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC and GC/MS. A total of 43 components were identified representing 96.5% of S. annuum oil. The most abundant compounds were germacrene D (29.8%), sabinene (10.3%), beta-ocimene Z (9.8%) and limonene (8.6%). The essential oil showed antifungal activity against fifteen fungi with MICs between 12.5 to 50 microl/ml.  相似文献
