Forage technology has been successfully introduced into smallholder cattle systems in Cambodia as an alternative feed source to the traditional rice straw and native pastures, improving animal nutrition and reducing labour requirements of feeding cattle. Previous research has highlighted the positive impacts of forage technology including improved growth rates of cattle and household time savings. However, further research is required to understand the drivers, challenges and opportunities of forage technology for smallholder cattle households in Cambodia to facilitate widespread adoption and identify areas for further improvement. A survey of forage-growing households (n = 40) in July–September 2016 examined forage technology adoption experiences, including reasons for forage establishment, use of inputs and labour requirements of forage plot maintenance and use of forages (feeding, fattening, sale of grass or seedlings and silage). Time savings was reported as the main driver of forage adoption with household members spending approximately 1 h per day maintaining forages and feeding it to cattle. Water availability was reported as the main challenge to this activity. A small number of households also reported lack of labour, lack of fencing, competition from natural grasses, cost of irrigation and lack of experience as challenges to forage growing. Cattle fattening and sale of cut forage grass and seedlings was not found to be a widespread activity by interviewed households, with 25 and 10% of households reporting use of forages for these activities, respectively. Currently, opportunities exist for these households to better utilise forages through expansion of forage plots and cattle activities, although assistance is required to support these households in addressing current constraints, particularly availability of water, if the sustainability of this feed technology for smallholder cattle household is to be established in Cambodia. 相似文献

"Tubules-Within-a-Tubule" Hierarchical Order of Mesoporous Molecular Sieves in MCM-41 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The recently discovered mesoporous aluminosilicate MCM-41 consists of hexagonal arrays of nanometer-sized cylindrical pores. It is shown that this material can be synthesized by cooperative condensation of silicate and cylindrical cationic micelles. Careful control of the surfactant-water content and the rate of condensation of silica at high alkalinity resulted in hollow tubules 0.3 to 3 micrometers in diameter. The wall of the tubules consisted of coaxial cylindrical pores, nanometers in size, that are characteristic of those of MCM-41. The formation of this higher order structure may take place through a liquid crystal phase transformation mechanism involving an anisotropic membrane-to-tubule phase change. The hierarchical organization of this "tubules-within-a-tubule" particle texture is similar to that of the frustules of marine diatoms. 相似文献

A 2-year-old male mixed-breed dog was examined after being hit by a car, and exploratory celiotomy revealed jejunal incarceration through an omental tear. The affected intestinal segment was distended and black, and had small serosal tears. Clinical signs of disease and hematologic, serum biochemical findings during surgery were consistent with concurrent diagnosis of sepsis. The dog responded to supportive treatment and resection of the affected intestinal segment by jejunal end-to-end anastomosis. 相似文献

Objectives of this study were to estimate the magnitude of the effects of various factors associated with ewes and their ram lamb mates on fertility, prolificacy, lamb survival, lamb weaning weight and ewe productivity and to estimate the heritability and repeatability of each trait. Records from 731 ewe-years, 75 ram lamb sires and 616 lambs born from the University of Illinois Rambouillet flock were used. Ewes mated to single-born ram lambs had higher fertility rates (P less than .01), gave birth to lambs with higher survival rates (P less than .01), weaned lighter (P less than .05) individual lambs but weaned more weight of lamb per ewe exposed (P less than .01) than ewes mated to multiple-born ram lambs. Ram lamb breeding weight, ram lamb scrotal circumference, ewe breeding weight and ewe age had relatively large and positive effects on the composite trait of weight of lamb weaned per ewe exposed and significant effects on a number of the component traits. Heritability and repeatability estimates were, respectively, as follows: fertility, 3%, 3%; prolificacy, 34%, 19%; lamb survival, 15%, 8%; lamb weaning weight, 7%, 36%; and ewe productivity, 27%, 10%. 相似文献

In the environment of Alpine glacier forefields, bacteria represent the functional link between initial soil development and secondary colonization. An important question is whether soil bacteria are adapted to the poor nutrient availability in this environment and whether selection processes significantly limit their local expansion along the gradients of chemical and biological factors. To address these questions, we used a two‐dimensional sampling strategy at our study site, the Damma glacier forefield, Switzerland, to characterize the soil environment by selected biogeochemical parameters. Our results revealed two contrasting sites that differed in time since deglaciation (‘young’ and ‘old’ soil, ≤ 13 years and > 53 years of ice‐free conditions) and vegetation cover (threefold increase), but also showed significant differences in soil properties thought to be relevant for the successional development of glacier forefield soils, such as pH (0.5‐fold decrease), ammonium (0.5‐fold decrease) concentration, and the content of total organic carbon (10‐fold increase). Isolated strains, affiliated to the genus Pseudomonas, according to their 16S rDNA profile, were tested experimentally for local adaptation by a reciprocal transfer experiment. The bacteria from both young and old soils showed a significant interaction with their local environment; the direction of the interaction, however, did not follow the expected pattern of local adaptation. The significant genoype‐with‐environment interaction indicates a limited local expansion of soil bacteria in the Damma glacier forefield over the range of only 110 m. The lack of local adaptation could be explained by environmental constraints such as exclusion of competition, different migration behaviour of bacteria from young and old soil, or the ability of early colonizing bacteria to survive under the glacier ice. 相似文献

A cellular sheath, the perineurium, forms a protective barrier around fascicles of nerve fibers throughout the peripheral nervous system. In a study to determine the cellular origin of perineurium, a culture system was used in which perineurium forms after purified populations of sensory neurons, Schwann cells, and fibroblasts are recombined. Before recombination, the Schwann cells or the fibroblasts were labeled by infection with a defective recombinant retrovirus whose gene product, beta-galactosidase, is histochemically detectable in the progeny of infected cells. Perineurial cells were labeled when fibroblasts had been infected but not when Schwann cells had been infected. Thus, perineurium arises from fibroblasts in vitro and, by implication, in vivo as well. 相似文献

Most desertification research focuses on degradation assessments without putting sufficient emphasis on prevention and mitigation strategies, although the concept of sustainable land management (SLM) is increasingly being acknowledged. A variety of already applied conservation measures exist at the local level, but they are not adequately recognised, evaluated and shared, either by land users, technicians, researchers, or policy makers. Likewise, collaboration between research and implementation is often insufficient. The aim of this paper is to present a new methodology for a participatory process of appraising and selecting desertification mitigation strategies, and to present first experiences from its application in the EU‐funded DESIRE project. The methodology combines a collective learning and decision approach with the use of evaluated global best practices. In three parts, it moves through a concise process, starting with identifying land degradation and locally applied solutions in a stakeholder workshop, leading to assessing local solutions with a standardised evaluation tool, and ending with jointly selecting promising strategies for implementation with the help of a decision support tool. The methodology is currently being applied in 16 study sites. Preliminary analysis from the application of the first part of the methodology shows that the initial stakeholder workshop results in a good basis for stakeholder cooperation, and in promising land conservation practices for further assessment. Study site research teams appreciated the valuable results, as burning issues and promising options emerged from joint reflection. The methodology is suitable to initiate mutual learning among different stakeholder groups and to integrate local and scientific knowledge. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The discriminatory power of four different DNA based typing methods was tested for the molecular subtyping of Salmonella Typhimurium phage type DT104 isolates. German DT104 strains (n = 133) originating from slaughter pigs were analysed by plasmid profiling, and 32 of them by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) using the restriction enzymes XbaI, SpeI or BlnI, random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) using 13 different primers and IS200 typing. A resulting subtyping scheme was obtained which is based on the most discriminatory power of the individual methods i.e. plasmid profiling and PFGE with all three enzymes. The index of discrimination obtained by the subtyping scheme was 0.909 closely approaching the maximum value of one. Although minor differences occurred in the molecular DNA pattern of single DT104 strains, a dominating subtyping pattern was observed confirming other studies which showed, that S. Typhimurium DT104 isolates are highly clonal. 相似文献
