OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns of seroconversion to bovine coronavirus (BCV) and shedding of BCV from the respiratory tract in feedlot cattle. ANIMALS: 1,074 calves in feedlots in Ohio, Texas, and Nebraska. PROCEDURE: Nasal swab specimens were obtained at time of arrival (day 0) and at various times during the initial 28 days after arrival at feedlots. Specimens were tested for BCV, using an antigen-capture ELISA. Serum samples were obtained at time of arrival and again 28 days after arrival; sera were analyzed for antibodies to BCV, using an antibody-detection ELISA. RESULTS: Samples from 12 groups of cattle entering 7 feedlots during a 3-year period revealed that 78 of 1,074 (7.3%) cattle were shedding BCV (range, 0 to 35.9% within specific groups). At time of arrival, 508 of 814 (62.4%) cattle had low (< 50) or undetectable BCV antibody titers. Seroconversion to BCV during the initial 28 days after arrival was detected in 473 of 814 (58%) cattle tested (range, 20.3 to 84.1 % within specific groups). In cattle shedding BCV from the nasal passages, 49 of 68 (72.1 %) seroconverted, and 472 of 746 (63.3%) cattle that were not shedding the virus seroconverted. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bovine coronavirus can be detected in populations of feedlot cattle in the form of viral shedding as well as seroconversion to the virus. Although only a few cattle were shedding the virus at the time of arrival at a feedlot, most of the cattle seroconverted to BCV by 28 days after arrival.  相似文献

The occurrence of equine arteritis virus in Australia   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper reports the first isolation of equine arteritis virus (EAV) in Australia and serological evidence of exposure to EAV in Australian horses. Twelve Standardbred stallions imported from North America were found to shed EAV in semen. One hundred and seven stallions were tested for serum antibodies to EAV and 73% of Standardbred stallions tested were seropositive as compared to 8% of Thoroughbred stallions. Serum antibody was detected in 71% of Standardbred mares, 6% of Standardbred racehorses and 1% of Thoroughbred mares and racehorses. Examination of stored serums demonstrated that EAV had been present in Australia since at least 1975.  相似文献

Effects of plastic pot scrubbers on feedlot performance and ruminal metabolism of steers fed all-concentrate diets were determined. In Trial 1, 31 crossbred steers (means initial BW, 290 kg) were penned and fed individually. Treatments were 1) 85% concentrate-15% corn silage diet, 2) 100% concentrate diet, and 3) 100% concentrate diet + ruminal insertion of eight plastic pot scrubbers per steer. During the first 112 d of the trial, steer ADG did not differ (P greater than .10) due to treatment. From d 113 to 152, steers provided with pot scrubbers had 16% greater ADG than those fed the 100% concentrate diet without pot scrubbers (P = .18). In Trial 2, 78 crossbred steers (means initial BW, 315 kg) were penned individually and fed the diets used in Trial 1. Steers fed the 100% concentrate diet received zero, four or eight pot scrubbers. From d 113 to 167, steers provided with four or eight pot scrubbers or fed the 85% concentrate diet had greater (P less than .10) gains than steers fed the 100% concentrate diet without pot scrubbers. In Trial 3, 120 steers (means initial BW, 286 kg) were grouped in 12 pens and limit-fed an all-concentrate diet for 84 d. Sixty steers were provided with six pot scrubbers each. Performance was not affected (P greater than .10) by the use of pot scrubbers during the 84-d growing phase. During the subsequent 84-d finishing phase, half the steers receiving each treatment were switched to either an 85% concentrate-15% corn silage or an 100% concentrate diet offered for ad libitum consumption.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

In Exp. 1, 36 individually penned steers (initial BW = 294 +/- 3.8 kg) were used to determine effects of dietary CP percentage and programming gain on performance and carcass characteristics. Steers were fed to achieve a predicted gain of 1.13 kg/d for the first 84 kg of gain and 1.36 kg/d for the next 124 kg of gain and were offered feed for ad libitum consumption for the final 58 kg of gain before slaughter. In these three phases of growth, steers were fed diets, sequentially, with the following CP percentages: HHH (16, 13.5, and 12.5%), LHH (9, 13.5, and 13%), or LLL (9, 9, and 9%). When predicted gain was 1.13 kg/d, ADG was greater (P < 0.01) for steers in the HHH (1.09 kg/d) vs LHH and LLL (0.83 kg/d) systems. When predicted gain was 1.36 kg/d, ADG and gain efficiency were greatest (P < 0.01) for steers in the LHH system. Overall ADG and gain efficiency were greater (P < 0.01) for steers in the HHH (1.46 kg/d, 0.194) and LHH systems (1.38 kg/d, 0.190), compared with steers in the LLL (1.21 kg/d and 0.166) system. Carcass fat thickness was lower for steers in the LHH (0.74 cm) system than for steers in the LLL system (1.09 cm). In Exp. 2, 18 individually penned steers (initial BW = 225 +/- 5.8 kg) were either offered a 13% CP diet for ad libitum intake (AL) throughout the 134-d experiment or fed a high- (16% CP; PI-HH) or low- (10% CP; PI-LH) CP diet and fed to achieve a predicted gain of 1.13 kg/d for the first 85 d of the experiment. Steers in the PI-HH and PI-LH feeding regimens were then offered a 13% CP diet for ad libitum consumption from d 86 to 134. Fractional protein accretion rate was greater (P < 0.01) for steers in the PI-HH and PI-LH feeding regimens than for steers in the AL regimen at d 92, 106, and 120. Fractional breakdown and synthesis rates were not affected (P = 0.63) by feeding regimen. Increased ADG and gain efficiency of steers during compensatory growth periods may in part be due to greater fractional accretion rates of skeletal muscle protein.  相似文献

The performance of amorphous organic photorefractive (PR) materials in applications such as optical data storage is generally limited by the concentration of active molecules (chromophores) that can be incorporated into the host without forming a crystalline material with poor optical quality. In polymeric PR systems described previously, performance has been limited by the necessity of devoting a large fraction of the material to inert polymer and plasticizing components in order to ensure compositional stability. A new class of organic PR materials composed of multifunctional glass-forming organic chromophores is described that have long-term stability and greatly improved PR properties.  相似文献

Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) fossils discovered in the Kem Kem region of Morocco include large predatory dinosaurs that inhabited Africa as it drifted into geographic isolation. One, represented by a skull approximately 1.6 meters in length, is an advanced allosauroid referable to the African genus Carcharodontosaurus. Another, represented by a partial skeleton with slender proportions, is a new basal coelurosaur closely resembling the Egyptian genus Bahariasaurus. Comparisons with Cretaceous theropods from other continents reveal a previously unrecognized global radiation of carcharodontosaurid predators. Substantial geographic differentiation of dinosaurian faunas in response to continental drift appears to have arisen abruptly at the beginning of the Late Cretaceous.  相似文献

A 4 x 4 Latin square metabolism trial with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was conducted to determine N kinetics in steers. Steers were fed either untreated (UNT-WS) or alkaline hydrogen peroxide-treated wheat straw (AHP-WS) based diets supplemented with soybean meal (SBM) or blood meal (BM). Single doses of (15NH4)2SO4 were infused into ruminal pools to determine N kinetics. Ruminal NH3N concentrations (main effects) were 3.81, 1.65, 3.18, and 2.28 mg/dL in steers when fed diets that contained UNT-WS, AHP-WS, SBM, and BM, respectively. Ruminal N pool size was greater (P < .05) for UNT-WS than for AHP-WS diets and also was greater (P < .10) for SBM than for BM diets. Nitrogen flux rate into the rumen was not affected (P > .10) by diet. However, production rate of N from the ruminal pool was greater (P < .05) for UNT-WS than for AHP-WS diets and greater (P < .10) for SBM than for BM diets. Nitrogen recycled into the rumen was 33% greater (P < .05) for AHP-WS than for UNT-WS diets and 26% greater (P < .05) for BM than for SBM diets. Nitrogen recycling (percentage of N intake) was 33, 56, 36, and 49% for UNT-WS, AHP-WS, SBM, and BM diets, respectively. A technique was used to monitor continuously ruminal pH using a strip-chart recording pH meter. Ruminal pH measurements were made in four ruminal-cannulated crossbred wether lambs (ag initial weight, 42.5 kg). For l.5 h daily, lambs were given ad libitum access to 50% concentrate-50% chopped orchardgrass hay diets supplements with 0, l.5, 3.0 and 4.5% sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). A split-plot Latin-square design was used to evaluate NaHCO3 level and day of adaptation on the percentage of time (%T) that ruminal pH was less than 6.6, 6.2, 5.8, 5.4 and 5.0. No effect due to day of adaptation existed for ruminal pH measurements (P more than .10), while the effect of dietary NaHCO3 level was quadratic (P more than .01) for the %T that ruminal pH was less than 5.4. To evaluate the effects of NaHCO3 on nutrient digestion, the same diets were fed to eight wether lambs (avg initial weight, 38 kg) at 85% of their ad libitum intake in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin-square digestion trial. Digestibilities of dry matter (DM), organic matter, N and fiber fractions were not different due to level of NaHCO3 (P greater than .10). Ash digestibility increased with increasing levels of dietary NaHCO3 (P less than .01). Four ruminal-cannulated mature Hereford steers were also given ad libitum access to the diets in a split-plot Latin-square trial to evaluate effects of dietary NaHCO3 level on ruminal pH and in situ digestion of soybean meal N and orchardgrass DM. During incubation of the dacron bags for 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 36 h also increased linearly with increasing level of NaHCO3. Ruminal solid and liquid dilution rates were not affected by level of supplemental NaHCO3 (P greater than .10). The results of these trials suggest that increasing level of dietary NaHCO3 greatly increases the proportion of time ruminal pH is above critical levels for ruminal protein and dry matter digestion, but does not affect total tract nutrient digestion when 50% concentrate diets are fed.  相似文献
