Early and accurate diagnosis is a critical first step in mitigating losses caused by plant diseases. An incorrect diagnosis can lead to improper management decisions, such as selection of the wrong chemical application that could potentially result in further reduced crop health and yield. In tomato, initial disease symptoms may be similar even if caused by different pathogens, for example early lesions of target spot (TS) caused by the fungus Corynespora cassicola and bacterial spot (BS) caused by Xanthomonas perforans. In this study, hyperspectral imaging (380–1020 nm) was utilized in laboratory and field (collected by an unmanned aerial vehicle; UAV) settings to detect both diseases. Tomato leaves were classified into four categories: healthy, asymptomatic, early and late disease development stages. Thirty-five spectral vegetation indices (VIs) were calculated to select an optimum set of indices for disease detection and identification. Two classification methods were utilized: (i) multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP), and (ii) stepwise discriminant analysis (STDA). Best wavebands selection was considered in blue (408–420 nm), red (630–650 nm) and red edge (730–750 nm). The most significant VIs that could distinguish between healthy leaves and diseased leaves were the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) for both diseases, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI850) for BS in all stages, and the triangular vegetation index (TVI), NDVI850 and chlorophyll index green (Chl green) for TS asymptomatic, TS early and TS late disease stage respectively. The MLP classification method had an accuracy of 99%, for both BS and TS, under field (UAV-based) and laboratory conditions.

Improvements in yield and productivity in lactic acid fermentation by Lactobaccilus brevis cells immobilized on delignified cellulosic (DC) material are reported. The system proved to be more efficient in comparison with the work reported by other workers. Yields of 80 and 100% conversion using glucose were obtained at 30 degrees C in 1 day of fermentation time. Lactic acid fermentation using whey as substrate was obtained at 30 degrees C in 1-1.5 days, resulting in 70% yield, whereas the remaining lactose in whey was converted to alcohol byproduct, leading to a 90% lactose exploitation and 100% conversion. Cell immobilization of L. brevis on DC material was proved by its reuses in repeated batch fermentations and through electron microscopy. A series of 10 repeated batch fermentations without any loss in cell activity showed a tendency for high operational stability. The presence of DC material resulted in a drastic drop of the fermentation time from 48 to 13 h.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of thermal drying of immobilized Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus on apple pieces on the use of the derived biocatalyst in whey fermentation. The thermally dried immobilized biocatalyst was compared to wet and freeze-dried immobilized cells, in respect to maintenance of cell viability and fermentation efficiency. The thermal drying process appeared to be more efficient on survival rate as an 84% of the cells used for immobilization survived the process, while the freeze-drying process led to a 78% rate. The thermally dried immobilized biocatalyst was used in 12 repeated batch fermentations of synthetic lactose medium and whey at 37, 45, and 50 degrees C in order to evaluate its metabolic activity. The high number of repeated batch fermentations showed a tendency for high operational stability. Fermentations continued for up to 2 months without any significant loss of metabolic activity. SPME GC/MS analysis of aroma-related compounds revealed the distinctive character of fermented whey produced by the thermally dried immobilized bacterium cells. The effect of storage at 4-6 degrees C for up to 165 days of the biocatalyst, held directly after drying and after repeated batch fermentations, on fermentation activity was also studied. After storage, reactivation in whey was immediate, and the immobilized biocatalyst was able to produce up to 51.7 g/L lactic acid at 37 degrees C. The potential of thermally dried immobilized L. delbrueckii as a starter culture for food production was subsequently evaluated.  相似文献

Young leaves of many plants are transiently red because of the accumulation of anthocyanins, with the redness disappearing as leaves mature. Among the many hypothetical functions of foliar anthocyanins, two are tested in this field study: the sunscreen photoprotective function against excess visible light and the handicap signal against herbivory. We took advantage of intraspecies variation in anthocyanin concentrations of young leaves of Quercus coccifera L. to compare in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, reflectance spectra, total phenolics and the extent of herbivory of leaves of red- and green-leaved phenotypes occupying the same habitat. Photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiencies obtained at various photon fluence rates of red light were similar in green and red leaves. In white light, PSII efficiencies were slightly higher in red leaves than in green leaves, indicating a slight photoprotective role of anthocyanins in the field. However, compared with red phenotypes, green phenotypes suffered greater herbivore damage, as judged by the number of leaves attacked and the area lost to herbivory. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the concentrations of anthocyanins and total phenolics. We suggest that the importance of a photoprotective anthocyanic screen is low in thin, young leaves with low chlorophyll concentrations because the green light attenuated by anthocyanins is less significant for chlorophyll excitation. However, the decreased reflectance in the green spectral band and the concomitant leveling of reflectance throughout the 400-570 nm spectral range may either make red leaves less discernible to some insect herbivores or make insect herbivores more discernible to predators, or both. Moreover, excessive herbivory may be additionally discouraged by the high phenolic concentrations in red leaves.  相似文献

The antioxidant activity (IC(50)) of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), commercial olive oil, and other vegetable oils (soybean, sunflower, and corn oil) was determined by UV-vis and by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of the stable radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Also, we studied the antioxidant activity of the methanol soluble phase (methanolic, MF) and the nonsoluble phase (lipidic, LF) of oils by the same methods. Similarly, we studied the effect of heating on the antioxidant activity at 160 and 190 degrees C. Also, the MF, containing the polyphenolic substances, was used for measurements of the radical scavenging capacity toward the most important oxygen free radicals, superoxide anion (O(2)(*)(-)) and hydroxyl (HO(*)) radicals. Results showed that soybean oil and EVOO had the highest antioxidant potential and thermal stability. In the case of soybean oil, the antioxidant capacity is the result of its high content of gamma- and delta-tocopherols (with the highest antioxidant capacity and thermostabilities), whereas in EVOO, the antioxidant potential is the result of the combination of specific antioxidant polyphenols, which are acting additionally as effective stabilizers of alpha-tocopherol. The high content of EVOO in tyrosol, hydrotyrosol, and oleuropein and other polyphenolics with radical scavenging abilities toward superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical suggests that olive oil possesses biological properties that could partially account for the observed beneficial health effects of the Mediterranean diet.  相似文献

Harvest costs are significant for tree fruit producers and, yet, not well studied. In this paper a prototype system for measuring harvest worker efficiency in sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) is presented. This weighing system consists of a digital weighing platform compatible with standard commercial fruit bins and a data logger interfaced to a wireless radio. Weight data were transmitted every 5 s, filtered and stored to a laptop computer (database). System functionality and reliability were evaluated in five orchards in cooperation with three commercial growers. Preliminary tests showed that the system did not interfere with normal harvest activities and that the efficiency of pickers and picking teams varied within and across orchard blocks, (e.g. 0.75 to 2.87 kg/min), depending on their experience and skills (e.g. 1.37 kg/min for skilled workers vs. 0.64 kg/min for unskilled). Further, the mean picking rate of ‘Skeena’ without pedicels (stem-free) was 1.15 kg/min, almost 50 % greater than fruit with stems (mean = 0.75 kg/min) when picked by the same crew and orchard.  相似文献

In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of different well-tested conservation techniques in an effort to successfully protect sea turtle nests. From an eight-year study on the island of Zakynthos, West Greece, we have experimentally investigated the effectiveness of two different conservation techniques applied to loggerhead sea turtle nests and provided statistical measures to evaluate their conservation value. The categories of nests evaluated include: (i) nests incubated in situ, (ii) translocated into a beach hatchery, or (iii) protected by metal cages. Results of the analysis showed significant interannual variations in hatching success as obtained for each one of the three groups of nests. Significant differences were also observed when comparing hatching success data among the three groups of nests during the eight-year period. Overall, our results indicate that relocation of nests laid at highly threatened locations and the placement of protective cages on nests in situ provide adequate conservation measures that could allow an increase in hatchling production; although their choice and application should be based on the specific conditions and threats of each nest.  相似文献

The study of landscape structure and functions, including the underlying ecological and anthropogenic processes has traditionally relied on visual aspects without considering information of non-visionary cues, e.g. auditory. In this work we applied a complementary approach for the study of landscapes using qualitative information for the sonic environment. In particular we studied the qualitative linkages between landscape structure and functions and daily sound patterns. The main objectives were the investigation of the spatial and temporal variability in sound perception, and the identification of the dominant sound categories (anthropogenic, biological, geophysical originated sounds) in relation to landscape characteristics. Our results showed significant spatio-temporal variability in the intensity of different sound categories, which reflects distinct soundscape patterns. Temporal sound variability reflected the daily cycle of anthropogenic activities and biological processes, whereas the spatial sound viability was mainly shaped by landscape attributes. The combination of the visual landscape information and its emergent acoustic profile enhances our perception and understanding of nature and this integrated approach may have many practical applications in landscape management, monitoring and planning.  相似文献
