Parenteral administration of ivermectin (22,23-dihydroavermectin B1) significantly reduced the numbers of adult large and small strongyles, the immature stages of small strongyles, pinworm and ascarid, the microfilariae of Onchocerca cervicalis and gastrophilid bots from naturally infected horses. Strongylus vulgaris, S. edentatus and S. equinus were effectively removed by 0.02 mg/kg. Adult small strongyles, Cyathostomum pateratum, C. catinatum, Cylicocyclus nassatus, C. leptostomus, Cyliostephanus minutus, C. longibursatus and C. goldi, were effectively removed by 0.1 mg/kg. Fourth stage small strongyles (cyathostomes), 4th stage Oxyuris equi, 5th stage Parascaris equorum and the microfilarie of Onchocerca cervicalis were significantly reduced by 0.1 mg/kg also. The stomach bots, Gastrophilus intestinalis and G. nasalis, were effectively removed by 0.02 mg of ivermectin/kg. Analysis of the dose response curves obtained for the nematode and larval dipteran parasites found in these naturally infected horses suggests that a parenteral dose of 0.2 mg/kg ivermectin would produce 95% or more removal of these parasites. The antiparasitic efficacies observed for ivermectin in this controlled trial were equivalent to the efficacies found in an abbreviated critical trial contained within the controlled trial. However, it was calculated that the man—day effort required for data collection from one critical trial horse was the same as for 6 controlled-trial horses.  相似文献

Cestrum diurnum poisoning was described in a Florida bull. Clinical signs included chronic wasting and progressive lameness. Plasma clacium was elevated for long periods of time but decreased toward low normal values. There was pronouced C-cell hyperplasia. Osteopetrosis was very severe and reflected retarded osteocytic osteolysis and chondrolysis. Further negative effects on the osteocytes eventually lead to osteonecrosis. Soft tissue calcinosis involved tendons and ligaments, major arteries and veins but kidneys and lungs were spared. Whereas the osteopetrosis could be explained by hypercalcitoninism, the osteonecrosis was believed to result from direct action by the Cestrum diurnum factor, previously shown to have an action similar to that of 1,25-dihydroxy-cholecalciferol, which is the biologically active metabolite of vitamin D3.  相似文献

A 4-mo-old, 185-kg male giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) was presented due to stifle effusion and lameness of 3-wk duration. Radiographs revealed a fracture of the extensor fossa of the lateral trochlear ridge of the femur at the origin of the peroneus tertius. Under anesthesia, dysfunction of the reciprocal apparatus was documented by flexing the stifle while the tarsus remained extended. An avulsion fracture of the origin of the peroneus tertius and extensor digitorum longus muscle was diagnosed. An exploratory arthroscopy of the femorotibial joint was followed by arthrotomy to excise the large bone fragment from its soft tissue attachments. Because of the fractious temperament of the animal, postoperative care was restricted to stall rest for 3 mo, and no postoperative complications arose. Only a mild residual lameness remained by 6 mo after surgery.  相似文献

A 9‐year‐old Warmblood gelding underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the carpal and proximal metacarpal regions for evaluation of prolonged right forelimb lameness. Magnetic resonance findings were indicative of desmopathy of the right lateral carpometacarpal ligament and the interosseous ligament between the third and fourth metacarpal bones. Based on the MR findings and lack of response to conservative therapy, surgery using a drilling technique was performed to facilitate fusion of the right carpometacarpal joint. After surgery and a 6‐month rest and rehabilitation programme, the horse returned to soundness. This case report describes a unique combination of lateral carpal/proximal metacarpal soft tissue injuries that resulted in prolonged lameness and were treated with facilitated arthrodesis of the carpometacarpal joint. These soft tissue injuries should be considered as a differential diagnosis in horses with lameness localised to the proximal metacarpal/distal carpal region.  相似文献

Two replicated controlled trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of florfenicol against Aeromonas salmonicida and Vibrio salmonicida infections in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., smolts kept in 25‰ salt water. Infection with A. salmonicida was treated with florfenicol, oxolinic acid, oxytetracycline, trimethoprim/sulphadiazine or flumequine, whereas the V. salmonicida infection was treated with florfenicol or oxolinic acid only. A. salmonicida infection was induced by the introduction of cohabitant fish previously inoculated intraperitoneally. Medication started simultaneously in all test tanks on the first day of specific mortality among test fish. V. salmonicida infection was induced by intraperitoneal inoculation of all test fish. Medication started 1 day after infection. Medicated feeds were produced by coating the antibacterials on standard feed pellets, and administered twice daily for 10 consecutive days. With the dose used in the present trials, florfenicol was highly effective in reducing specific mortalities due to both infections. It was slightly more effective than oxolinic acid and trimethoprim/sulphadiazine against A. salmonicida infection. There was no significant difference between florfenicol and oxolinic acid in reducing specific mortalities due to V. salmonicida.  相似文献

Biochemical and immunological characteristics of peroxidase activity of the skin epithelium of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were investigated and compared with peroxidase activity of blood cells. Skin as well as blood-borne peroxidases eluted from the Superdex column as a 135 kDa protein and both probably are tetrameric molecules. Skin peroxidase activity was characterized by a Vmax of 51.5 ± 1.3 U mg-1 min-1 and a KM of 1.64 ± 0.18 mM ortho-phenylenediamine (OPD), whereas blood-borne peroxidase was characterized by a 1,000 fold higher specific activity (Vmax = 30.5 103 ± 2.5 103 U mg-1 min-1) and a higher affinity (KM = 0.875 ± 0.003 mM OPD). Polyclonal antibodies were raised against concanavalin-A purified skin peroxidase as well as blood-borne peroxidase. Immunocytochemical labelling showed that peroxidase is present in mucous cells and in mucus covering the skin and gill epithelia, as well as in erythrocytes and leucocytes. We conclude that the mucous cells of the skin produce a biochemically distinct peroxidase that is released in the mucus and may contribute to the antimicrobial properties of the mucous layer covering the skin. After exposure of the fish to cadmium the kinetic characteristics of the enzyme activity, as determined in skin homogenates, changed considerably. The Vmax increased significantly to 61.9 ± 1.1 U mg-1 min-1, and the affinity for OPD increased to the value demonstrated for blood-borne peroxidase (KM = 0.888 ± 0.045 mM OPD). Increased peroxidase levels after cadmium exposure were also demonstrated immunochemically in a dotblot assay. However, no significant changes were observed when the circulatory system of the fish was perfused prior to sampling, indicating that erythrocytes are a major contributor to the increased peroxidase activity in carp skin during cadmium exposure. This likely reflects the increased vascularization of the connective tissue layer underlying the skin epithelium, which takes place when the fish are exposed to chronic stressors including cadmium. In the cadmium-exposed fish this effect prevented the biochemical detection of stressor-related changes in epithelial peroxidase reported earlier with cytochemical methods.  相似文献
