A captive female square‐lipped rhinoceros born in 1993 had been showing intermittent signs of bilateral conjunctivitis and conjunctival proliferation since 1998. Periodic improvement was noted, especially in winter, but overall the condition had deteriorated over the years. Treatment with various topical, intralesional, and systemic antibiotics and glucocorticosteroids was largely ineffective, as were repeated dewormings. No primary cause for these lesions was found in biopsies taken in 2000 and 2006, although a severe infiltrate of numerous eosinophils was observed in the latter. As the condition worsened, secondary corneal changes were noted, and eventually vision was lost due to proliferative conjunctival tissue. Aggressive resection of the proliferating tissue in 2013 restored vision and submitted biopsies yielded a diagnosis of severe allergic conjunctivitis, eosinophilic granuloma, and habronematid (Habronema or Draschia) larval infection. As no other rhinoceros in the herd was affected, including two calves born to the patient who were in close contact with their mother, it was concluded the presentation was most likely due to a hypersensitivity reaction to the dead or dying larvae. Fly repellent is now regularly applied around the eye of this rhinoceros, and a protective face mask has been fitted. Previous studies using F1 reciprocal crosses and two parental lines of broilers show the sire is instrumental in determining the in vitro leukocyte function and cytokine/chemokine profile. Since the innate immune response is the primary means young chickens have to protect themselves, we hypothesize utilizing a novel genomics approach to select sires based on an elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine profile. By identifying sires with increased pro-inflammatory cytokine (interleukin [IL]-1beta and IL-6) and chemokine (CXCLi2 and CCLi2) mRNA expression levels, we expect the progeny will also have elevated profiles. We characterized the pro-inflammatory cytokine and chemokine profile of 119 sires using quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) and identified two populations with inherently high and low mRNA expression levels of IL-1beta, IL-6, CXCLi2, and CCLi2. Select high and low sires were then used to produce progeny for the second phase of the trial. Abstract

Stimulatory effects of humic substances (HS) on plant growth have been observed and widely documented. Studies have often shown positive effects on seed germination, root initiation and total plant biomass. The consistency of these observations has been uncertain, predominantly due to the lack of understanding of the plant growth promotion mechanism. Often these effects have been attributed to a direct effect of plant growth hormones; whereas in other instances the term “hormone-like activity” has been used to describe the plant growth stimulation (Chen and Aviad, Humic Substances in Soil and Crop Sciences: Selected Readings, American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, 1990; Nardi et al., Humic Substances in Terrestrial Ecosystems, Elsevier Science B.V., 1996). Yet, investigators have been unable to prove that plant growth regulators are present in HS preparations, or the evidence provided remains unconvincing. An alternative hypothesis suggesting that growth enhancement of plants grown in nutrient solution (NS) containing HS is the result of improved micronutrient availability, Fe in particular, has been postulated and tested in the present study. Nutrient solutions containing N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Mo, Cu, Mn, Zn, and Fe at concentrations considered to be optimal for plant growth were tested for solubility of the Fe, Zn, and Mn, 7 days after preparation. In addition to control solutions at pH values of 5, 6, 7, and 7.5, 0 to 200 mg L?1 of leonardite humic acid (HA) were added to the solutions and they were tested for Fe and Zn solubility. The HA greatly enhanced the maintenance in solution of Fe, in all the tested solutions, and Zn at pH 7.5. Mn mostly remained in solution in its inorganic forms. Plant growth experiments were carried out on both dicotyledonous plants (melons and soybean) and monocotytedonous Poaceae plants (ryegrass), due to the major difference in their Fe uptake mechanism. Plants grown in the absence of Fe exhibited severe Fe deficiency that could only partially be corrected with the addition of mineral Fe salts. The addition of HA or fulvic acid (FA) without addition of Fe, and Zn resulted in partial growth enhancement and correction of Fe deficiency, or none of the two, in the various experiments. This suggests that the growth enhancement effect observed in solutions containing Fe, Zn, and HS was related to the micronutrients rather than to phytohormones. However, the addition of Fe, Zn and either EDTA, HA or FA resulted in healthy, chlorophyll rich plants and enhanced growth, thereby providing evidence that improved Fe, and possibly Zn nutrition is a major mechanism of plant growth stimulation by HS. The use of the term hormone-like activity could be the result of the similarity of the physiological effects obtained in plants enjoying sufficient supply of Fe and Zn.  相似文献

 为了对江西省赣江源区内主要土类的抗蚀性能进行研究,测定各土类的有机质质量分数、密度、抗蚀指数、团聚度、团聚状况、分散率、分散系数、结构破坏率和水稳性团聚体含量等抗蚀性指标,进行主成分分析。结果表明,土壤的抗蚀性大小顺序为:山地矮林土(74.67)>黄壤(61.90)>山地黄红壤(47.26)>黄红壤(44.77)>紫色土(39.79)>红壤(28.34)。在红壤、紫色土区域不仅要预防以暴雨为主要侵蚀力的水土流失,而且需采取相应的措施增加地被物覆盖度、减少人为破坏,以及通过施肥等措施增加土壤的抗蚀性,从而减少水土流失;山地黄红壤、黄红壤区域必须对民众做好宣传工作,在开发利用的同时加强人们对生态环境的保护意识,避免边治理边破坏现象一再发生;黄壤和山地矮林土地区,在综合利用时注意保持现有的良好生态环境,尽可能地避免有利于水土流失活动行为的发生;土壤有机质质量分数、团聚度、团聚状况是评价赣江源自然保护区土壤抗蚀性强弱的最好指标。  相似文献

Sorption of Sulfonamides and Tetracyclines to Montmorillonite Clay   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The current study investigated the sorption of sulfadimethoxine (SMT), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), tetracycline (TET), and oxytetracycline (OTC) to Na-rich montmorillonite clay in synthetic effluent (SE) and field wastewater effluent (FE). Both SMT and SMX showed a low sorption capacity and are therefore likely to be highly mobile in the environment, while the sorption of TET to clay in environmental pH range (6.5–7.5) showed similarly high adsorption capacity. Differences in sorption capacities of TET and OTC to SE or FE were attributed to the various concentrations of divalent cations in the effluents. In addition, differences in sorption of OTC or TET to SE were attributed to their different molecular structure. Moreover, the adsorption of TET in SE and FE showed linear adsorption isotherms and fitted to Freundlich model. Further experiments showed that addition of humic acid or SE to TET sorbed to clay did not enhance or suppress the sorption of TET to clay.  相似文献

The pattern of nitrogen assimilation in soybean plants treated with a herbicide that inhibits branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis was evaluated by (15)N isotopic analysis. The herbicide imazethapyr caused a strong decrease in nitrate uptake by roots, partly due to a reduced stomatal conductance. The inhibition of (15)N uptake was accompanied by a decrease in the (15)N content in the plant and, concomitantly, an inhibition of translocation to the shoot. Imazethapyr inhibited nitrate reductase activity in leaves and roots. Among all parameters studied, "de novo" synthesis of proteins was the first parameter of the N assimilation metabolism affected by the herbicide. These results show that this class of herbicides totally damages N metabolism and indicates a regulatory effect on N uptake and translocation that would be mediated by the increase in free amino acid pool provoked by the inhibition of branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis.  相似文献

通过对“小麦-玉米-甘薯”旱三熟连续3年9茬作物(玉米、甘薯、小麦)施用氯化钾试验结果的灰色关联分析表明:增施钾肥和有机肥能提高“麦-玉-薯”旱三熟生产系统的稳定性;作物经济产量随施钾量提高而提高,增施有机肥也可显著提高作物产量,特别是玉米、甘薯的生物产量;在保证无机氮、无机磷供应的前提下,中钾处理增产效果高于低钾加有机肥处理,而低钾处理增产效果又高于有机肥;有机肥及钾肥能显著提高玉米、小麦的粗蛋白含量、穗粒数、千粒重,促进甘薯薯块增大增重。土壤速效钾含量随着施钾量增加而增加。  相似文献

Pomegranate juice is well known for its health beneficial compounds, which can be attributed to its high level of antioxidant activity and total polyphenol content. Our objective was to study the relationships between antioxidant activity, total polyphenol content, total anthocyanins content, and the levels of four major hydrolyzable tannins in four different juices/homogenates prepared from different sections of the fruit. To this end, 29 different accessions were tested. The results showed that the antioxidant activity in aril juice correlated significantly to the total polyphenol and anthocyanin contents. However, the homogenates prepared from the whole fruit exhibited an approximately 20-fold higher antioxidant activity than the level found in the aril juice. Unlike the arils, the antioxidant level in the homogenates correlated significantly to the content of the four hydrolyzable tannins in which punicalagin is predominant, while no correlation was found to the level of anthocyanins.  相似文献
