This research was conducted to explore genetic material that can yield better under salt stress conditions. The experiment was laid out using 27 upland cotton genotypes in a RCBD 2 factorial arrangement with two replications. Saline water (NaCl at 20 dS/m) was applied after satisfactory emergence was achieved. The crop was raised to maturity and data relating to yield, fiber quality and ionic traits were recorded. Analysis of variance showed significant variations in the germplasm. Plant height, bolls per plant, boll weight, GOT%, staple length, staple strength, K+ and K+/Na+ ratio under salinity stress showed a highly significant correlation with seed-cotton yield. The highest direct effect on seedcotton yield per plant was exhibited by bolls per plant and boll weight. The results from the correlation and path coefficient analyses revealed that although the K+/Na+ ratio had a strong positively significant association with seedcotton yield, its direct effect on the seed-cotton yield was negative and thus selection on the basis of K+/Na+ may not be fruitful. Hence, only indirect selection through bolls per plant and boll weight may be effective in increasing the seedcotton yield per plant under salinity stress.  相似文献

A phytoplasma-associated disease was identified in Brassica campestris (sarson) plants during a survey conducted in Punjab province of Pakistan in 2014–2016. The symptomatic plants showed characteristic symptoms of phyllody and witches’ broom. Phytoplasma presence was detected by polymerase chain reaction on 16S ribosomal and tuf DNAs, followed by RFLP analysis and sequence comparison of the 16S rRNA and tuf genes. The phytoplasma detected was classified in a new ribosomal subgroup designed 16SrIX-H. The phytoplasma presence in phloem tissues of symptomatic sarson samples was also confirmed through light microscopy and transmission studies to healthy plants through dodder and the leafhopper Orosius albicinctus. This is the first report of identification of 16SrIX-H subgroup phytoplasma associated with sarson and its natural vector in Pakistan.  相似文献

Stem brown canker or Botryosphaeria canker disease impairs the growth and kills the shoots, limbs and even trunks of infected apple trees. Apple roots are usually colonized by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, which may have a positive influence on plant growth and suppression of diseases. In order to assess the efficacy of AM to suppress the disease severity and plant growth enhancement, nine AMF inoculation treatments (Sclerocystis dussi, Glomus intraradices, G. fasciculatum, G. bagyaraji, G. leptotichum, G. monosporum, Gigaspora margarita, a mixed AM culture and a non-mycorrhizal control treatment) were used in this present study. Two-year-old potted apple plants, maintained under glasshouse conditions, were either pre-inoculated with AMF followed by stem inoculation with Botryosphaeria ribis or simultaneously inoculated with Botryosphaeria ribis and AM. The results indicated that the incidence of canker was less severe in plants inoculated with AMF in comparison to non-mycorrhizal control. Timing of inoculation also had a significant effect on disease development and plant survival. Plants pre-inoculated with mycorrhiza performed better over those inoculated simultaneously with Botryosphaeria ribis and AM fungi. Furthermore, AM inoculation resulted in improved survival and growth of AMF-colonized plants; though, it varied by species of AM fungi utilized.  相似文献

In tomato, the stolbur disease caused by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma solani’ alters developmental processes resulting in malformations of both vegetative and reproductive organs, two stolbur phytoplasma strains PO and C induce mutually distinct symptoms. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of stolbur phytoplasma-infection on the Salicylic (SA) and Jasmonic (JA) acids hormone signalling pathways and to assess whether pre-activation of these defence pathways could protect tomato against the stolbur disease development. Expression of SA- and JA-dependent marker genes was studied in tomato by qRT-PCR. Results indicated that the SA-mediated defence response was activated by the stolbur phytoplasma strains PO and C in contrast to the JA-dependent defence pathway which was repressed by strain PO but activated by strain C. The two stolbur strains, PO and C, generated different responses, suggesting that the two strains might have distinct virulence factors, in agreement with the fact that they induce distinctive symptoms. In stolbur PO-infected tomato, pre-activation of the JA-dependent defence pathway by methyl jasmonate (MeJA) before infection had no effect on the disease development whereas pre-activation of the SA-dependent defence pathway by treatment with benzothiadiazole (BTH) prior to graft-inoculation of the phytoplasma resulted in a minor delay in phytoplasma multiplication and symptom production. As grafting implicates a high inoculum as compared to insect inoculation, it would be of interest to test BTH treatment in natural conditions.  相似文献

Microsatellite markers were developed and evaluated in Hevea brasiliensis, an important crop species producing natural rubber of commercial utility. Of eight microsatellite markers, four were found to be highly informative, amplifying a total of 19 alleles when evaluated against 27 cultivated Hevea clones/genotypes. Power of discrimination of the microsatellite loci was in the range of 0.62‐0.89, with a mean of 0.76 indicating these microsatellites could be valuable genetic markers for diversity characterization. A combination of four microsatellite markers was successfully used to discriminate uniquely all the 27 Hevea clones and some clone‐specific allelic profiles were generated. Cross‐species amplification of the markers developed in H. brasiliensis had also been demonstrated with two other Hevea species, H. benthamiana and H. spruceana, indicating a high degree of sequence homology at the flanking regions. Sequence analysis of the repeat region at the 3′‐UTR of the hydroxymethylglutaryl‐coenzyme A reductase gene, containing clusters of AG repeats in 15 clones, revealed the existence of two alleles based on the repeat length polymorphisms. Homozygosity as well as heterozygosity for both the alleles had also been detected among the clones. Frequency of homozygotes for the smaller allele (allele‐1) was found to be lower than the larger allele (allele‐2) among the primary clones of H. brasiliensis.  相似文献

Effect of temperature and relative humidity on population dynamics of insect pests of mung bean was studied during mung bean growing season of 2005. Insect pests included thrips (Thrips tabaci Lind.) and field cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and one arachnid pest mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch). Results revealed that the maximum population of thrips and mites was observed on August 23, 2005 with 1.537±0.031 per leaf and July 6, 2005 with 3.271±0.09 per leaf, respectively. The population of field cricket differed significantly during crop season and reached its peak during the initial stage of crop growth on June 14, 2005, i.e., 0.873±0.014 per plant at the temperature and relative humidity of 32°C and 54%, respectively, while the minimum population was noted on August, i.e., 0.710±0.010 per plant. Present studies conclusively document the correlation of weather factors and insect pest population. Temperature had a negative and significant correlation with thrips (r = −0.860) and a positive and significant correlation with mites (r = 0.606) and field cricket (r = 0.439). However, the relative humidity displayed a positive and significant correlation with thrips (r = 0.569), a negative non-significant correlation with mites (r = −0.313), and a significant negative correlation with field cricket (r = −0.770).  相似文献
