The study was carried out to determine combining ability and association of yield and yield components among crosses derived from seven selected cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) parents. Twenty-one hybrids were generated from diallel crosses excluding reciprocals. Hybrids along with seven parents were studied for combining ability and phenotypic correlations for seed yield and eight yield components. The result indicated that the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) were significant for most characters indicating the importance of both additive and non-additive genetic components. Additive gene action was important for eight characters except pod number, whereas non-additive gene action was not important for nodule number and grain yield. Parental lines IT86D-716 and IT81D-985 were found to be good general combiners for grain yield and other traits. The most promising specific combiners for yield and yield components were from crosses including IT87D-697-2 × IT86D-716, IT88D-867-11 × IT86D-716, IT93K-624 × IT87D-697-2, and IT87D-697-2 × IT92KD-405-1. Significant positive phenotypic correlations were observed between seed yield with pod length (POL), number of pods per plant (PON), and number of seeds per pod (SPD). POL, pod number per plant, SPD, and grain yield were identified as the best selection criteria that could be used in cowpea breeding programs.  相似文献

Green waste compost, peat, coir and wood bark were applied to metal-contaminated mine waste at the rates of 1%, 10% and 20% on dry weight basis, and perennial ryegrass grown over a period of 6 weeks. Addition of amendments led to increased biomass yield in all soils when compared with the non-amended soil. EDTA extractable Pb, Cu and Zn was significantly reduced in amended soil, while leaf and root metal concentrations were also significantly reduced by the application of amendments, especially at applied rates of 10% and 20%. Coir, green waste compost and wood bark stood out as amendments which were consistent in reducing soil extractable and plant tissue Pb, Cu and Zn; while peat rates above 10% enhanced solubility of Cu and Zn because of a lowering of the soil pH.  相似文献

A widely cultivated cocoyam variety,Xanthosoma sagittifollium, was assessed for its suitability for lager beer production, using maltedSorghum vulgare (white variety) for saccharification of the substrate. The three-mash decoction method was used. Results showed that the cocoyam was superior to barley and sorghum as a substrate because of its potentially higher carbohydrate content (71–78%) compared to barley (65%) and sorghum (70–73%). The percentage wort extract was 13.3–14.5° plato compared to 7–12 for barley and 13° for the tuber crop, cassava. The kiln driedXanthosoma sagittifollium gave a dark bager beer with good aroma (68%) and very good flavour (73%) when compared with a commercial lager beer (Monarch) as standard (100%). The alcohol content (4.16% w/v) and the specific gravity (1013) were within the range (4.0–6.4%) and (1011–1019), respectively, specified by the Standard Organization of Nigeria. Although the bitterness value 40 EBU, was higher than the typical range 16–30 EBU, the taste panel indicated this was acceptable. The pH was 4.68 compared with the standard 4.36, while the acidity (as % lactic acid) was 0.36 compared to 0.24 for some commercial products.  相似文献

Bonemeal, coir, compost, green waste compost, peat and wood bark all potentially could be used as amendments to remediate heavy metal contamination in soils. Their ability to sorb Pb, Cu and Zn was evaluated in the laboratory, using metal solutions ranging from 0 to 5 mmol/L as contaminants. The effects on sorption of metal concentration, background salt concentration and metal competition were evaluated. Single metal sorption by the six amendments was significantly different at metal concentrations of 1.5–5 mmol/L, with green waste compost, coir, compost and wood bark having the highest capacities to adsorb Pb, Cu and Zn. Langmuir sorption maxima were approximately 87 mg Pb/g (coir and green waste compost), 30 mg Cu/g (compost and green waste compost) and 13 mg Zn/g (compost and green waste compost) (equivalent to approx. 0.5 mmol/g of Pb and Cu, and 0.2 mmol/g Zn), all in a background solution of 0.001 M Ca(NO3)2. A higher background salt concentration and a combination of all three metals led to significant reduction in the amounts of Pb, Cu and Zn sorbed by all the amendments tested. Competing heavy metal cations in solution decreased Pb sorption to about 50–60% of that from a solution containing Pb alone; Cu sorption was reduced to about 30–40%; the effect of competition on Zn sorption was variable. Overall, in both single metal and competitive sorption, the order of strength of binding was Pb>Cu>>Zn.  相似文献

The concentrations of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) in water and selected fish species (Oreochromis nilzinc (oticus and Clarias gariepinus) from Benue-Niger River Confluence, Nigeria were investigated. The water and fish sample digests were quantified using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The study aimed to assess any possible human health risk associated with water and fish consumption from the selected geographical area. The concentration of the metals in the surface water ranged from 0.007 to 0.039, 0.106 to 0.240, 0.092 to 0.0164, 0.682 to 0.878, 0.058 to 0.309, and 0.136 to 1.645 mg/L for Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn, respectively, while the concentrations of the metals, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, and Fe in these fish species ranged from 0.034 to 0.679, 0.500 to 1.75, 0.152 to 0.351, 0.36 to 1.01, 5.32 to 7.41, and 4.25 to 9.17 mg/kg, respectively. Cd, Cr, and Pb levels in fish were higher than the provisional tolerable weekly intake of 7, 1.5, and 25 μg/kg bw, respectively, according to the World Health Organization. Dry season values of the metals in water samples were higher, and sharptooth catfish had higher amounts of the metals. The hazard quotient (HQ) for Cd indicated a possible potential health concern with fish consumption from this area.  相似文献
