A field study utilizing 145 mares of various age and breeding status was conducted to determine reproductive performance under native range conditions with only limited supplemental feeding. All mares had an average initial body condition score of 4.5 and a final score of 5.1 by the time breeding was completed and mares returned to pasture. Average foaling rate was 80%, and mares that had not conceived during the previous breeding season had a foaling rate of 94%, which was higher (P<.05) than 74% for lactating mares. Mares 16 years and older had a significantly lower foaling rate (P<.05) than younger mares. Old mares that were lactating at time of breeding had only a 37% foaling rate, which was less (P<.05) than for young lactating mares. The 94 mares bred by natural cover or artificial insemination that actually foaled required 1.43 cycles per conception. Lactating mares in the oldest age group required more cycles per conception (P<.05) than open mares, and these older, lactating mares also required more cycles per conception than younger mares with foals at side. Those mares diagnosed as pregnant or open at 45 days post breeding had a pregnancy rate of 97%. Average pregnancy loss for all mares was 7.7%. These data indicate that lactating mares in moderate body condition tended to skip a breeding season and that a body condition score of 5 was only marginally acceptable, especially in the case of lactating mares. Chickens were given daily injections of cyproterone acetate (CA) and the effects on plasma corticosterone, bodyweight, weights of the adrenals and lymphoid organs, numbers of circulating peripheral blood lymphocytes and their proliferation in the presence of lectins, concanavalin A (Con A) and phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), were investigated. Five daily doses of 10 or 30 mg CA kg-1 bodyweight each week over a three-week period caused a decrease in weight gain and a reduction in the relative weights of the bursa and thymus but not the spleen. There was a small decrease in the adrenals after treatment with 10 mg CA kg-1. When daily injections of CA were given over a seven-day period doses of 6 and 10 mg CA kg-1 bodyweight caused a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in plasma corticosterone concentration after four days. However, after eight daily injections of CA a single injection of corticotrophin (10 iu ACTH kg-1) increased circulating corticosterone indicating CA had not completely blocked adrenal synthesis. CA had no effect on numbers of circulating peripheral blood lymphocytes or their ability to proliferate in the presence of Con A or PHA. The results indicate that CA is effective in lowering circulating corticosterone in the fowl but this did not affect the numbers or responsiveness of peripheral blood lymphocytes.  相似文献

Technetium-99m methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (sestamibi) is a radiophartnaceutical used for the evaluation of myocardial perfusion. Increased uptake of sestamibi has also been documented in tumors. The objective of this study was to document the extracardiac biodistribution of 99mTc sestamibi in the normal dog. Nine normal beagles were given 0.35 mCi/kg 99mTc sestamibi intravenously, and 60 second images were made of the entire body at 1 hour post injection. A defined distribution pattern was recognized, with good visualization of the heart, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, kidneys, urinary bladder, popliteal lymph nodes, parotid salivary glands and zygomatic salivary glands. Splenic uptake was not seen.
Target to background ratios were calculated for all the regions listed, using background regions-of-interest with the smallest coefficient of variance for the denominator. The mean, range and standard deviation of these ratios are given.  相似文献

When [14C]F3-fluorodifen (2,4′-dinitro-4-trifluoromethyl diphenylether), carbonyl-[14C]CDAA (N,N-diallyl-2-chloroacetamide), and carbonyl-14C-propachlor (2-chloro-N-isopropylacetanilide) were fed to rats, 57 to 86% of the 14C was excreted via the urine within 48 hr. Although very little radioactivity was excreted in the feces of CDAA-treated rats, 15–22% of the 14C was excreted in the feces of propachlor- of fluorodifentreated rats and an average of 8% of the 14C remained in these rats 48 hr after treatment. Oxidation of the 14C label to [14C]O2 was not a major process in the metabolism of these herbicides. The only major radioactive metabolite present in the 24-h urine of fluorodifen-treated rats, 2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl mercapturic acid, accounted for 41% of the administered dose of 14C. In the metabolism of CDAA, the corresponding mercapturic acid accounted for 76% of the dose; it was the only major metabolite present in the 24-h urine. In contrast, three major metabolites were detected in the 24-h urine of propachlortreated rats, and the mercapturic acid accounted for only 20% of the dose. The mercapturic acid of each herbicide was identified by mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Juvenile Nile tilapia were fed either a basal (control) diet (n = 6 aquaria) or a diet supplemented with 1 g/kg β‐glucan (n = 24 aquaria) for 4 wk. At the end of this period, fish receiving β‐glucan were continued on the same diet (n = 12 aquaria) or switched to the control diet (n = 12 aquaria) for 2 wk. After 6 wk, tilapia continuously fed the β‐glucan supplemented diets had improved weight gain and feed efficiency than those fed the control diet uninterrupted or switched from the β‐glucan diet to the control after 4 wk. Feeding tilapia β‐glucan for 4 wk and then switching to the basal diet for 2 wk caused a significant increase in the respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear lymphocytes (17.77 × 103 units/1000 white blood cells [WBC]) compared to catfish fed the control diet (13.50 × 103 units/1000 WBC) or the β‐glucan diet continuously (13.57 × 103 units/1000 WBC), but other immune parameters were unaffected. Tilapia were then challenged with Streptococcus iniae. The two groups were divided again (n = 6 aquaria) postchallenge and continued on the same diet or switched to the other diet (β‐glucan or control) for another 3 wk. No differences in survival to S. iniae infection occurred between dietary groups.  相似文献

No precocious metamorphosis or other morphogenetic effects were seen following topical treatment of fifth instar Spodoptera exempta with pre- cocene II. [3H]-Precocene II penetrated the larvae rapidly following topical application. An uptake of 47% was recorded in the first hour and an average of 27% for the first 3 h. Radioactivity in the haemolymph reached a maximum 4 h after treatment at 6–8% of the applied dose. A maximum titre of precocene of 1.1 × 10?4 M was observed 2 h after treatment and a biological half-life of around 1 h was recorded for the first 6 h. The metabolite precocene 11–3, 4-dihydrodiol appeared in the haemolymph with a maximum titre of 1.1 × 10?4 M at 4 h suggesting metabolism via the 3, 4-epoxide. At the same time an unidentified metabolite was observed possibly corresponding to the 6- and 7-(O)-desmethylated products described by others. Very large quantities of highly polar materials were observed in the haemolymph throughout the experiment and it is thought that these corresponded to conjugates. The evidence suggests that peripheral detoxication mechanisms do not operate sufficiently rapidly to prevent the establishment of a high titre of precocene. This, however, did not affect the corpora allata in this insect, whereas in a sensitive species that has been studied by other workers, necrosis of the glands would have resulted. Alternative explanations for insensitivity are discussed.  相似文献

House flies were collected from dairies across New York state and the levels of resistance to seven insecticides were measured using standard laboratory assays with three to five diagnostic concentrations. The highest levels of resistance were found for tetrachlorvinphos, permethrin and cyfluthrin. Although levels of resistance to methomyl were somewhat lower, they were among the highest ever reported for field‐collected house flies. Resistance to pyrethrins was limited primarily to the lowest diagnostic concentration. House flies were susceptible to fipronil at all dairies, suggesting that this material would be highly effective for fly control. The levels of resistance were similar at all the dairies, irrespective of their insecticide use, suggesting substantial movement of flies between facilities. Relative to resistance levels found at New York dairies in 1987, resistance levels had increased for permethrin, were unchanged for tetrachlorvinphos and had decreased for dimethoate. To identify a single diagnostic concentration that could be used in the laboratory assays to assess accurately resistance levels in future studies, we carried out a ‘simulated’ field bioassay using formulated materials. A diagnostic concentration for each insecticide is proposed on the basis of a comparison of our bioassays. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
