In the frame of a project concerning the evaluation of the pollution level and the ozone experimental effect upon some bacterial indicators of a protected ecosystem, water samples were estimated microbiologically before and after saturation with ozone gas for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min. We found that the ozone treatment decreased the concentration in all different bacterial indicators by reducing their number for more than six times after 15 min of application. Total inactivation was observed for C. perfringens vegetative cells. Since there are complex relations between the microbial loading the water characteristics and the action of ozone, further studies are needed to determine the optimum conditions of ozone effect, as its use consists of a promising technology.  相似文献

A new phytophagous mite species, Panonychus citri (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) (the citrus red mite), was found in Cyprus during spring 2008, infesting citrus plantations. Mites occurred in large numbers, mainly in the canopy of orange, lemon and mandarin trees. The adults and larvae preferred the upper surfaces of mature leaves of the above citrus species, although they occurred on both leaf surfaces. Orange, lemon and mandarin trees were greatly affected by this mite, as its high population densities under hot and dry conditions in the spring caused heavy leaf drop (firing) and twig dieback.  相似文献

Aftershocks of the 29 November 1978 Oaxaca, Mexico, earthquake (surface-wave magnitude Ms = 7.8) define a rupture area of about 6000 square kilometers along the boundary of the Cocos sea-plate subduction. Fish feed accounts for more than 50% of aquaculture farms’ operating costs and thus careful feeding planning is vital. In the case of the Mediterranean, most farms have their installations in coastal waters, hence this is relatively easy to perform. Low magnitude environmental conditions (winds, waves and currents) as well as easy and quick access ensures high consumption rates and smooth operation. Nevertheless, as competition for these waters increases the option of moving to offshore waters is seen as a solution. Moving further away from shore means exposing installations to harsher environments and lower degree of onshore monitoring. As a result, environmental conditions must now be monitored on-site, especially the ones affecting operations and feeding planning. For this reason, this article presents a feed management system powered by a stand-alone renewable energy sources system. The system provides energy independence and mobility by wirelessly transmitting important parameters onshore. An investment appraisal cost model is also described. The model compares the system’s costs over the fish feed cost saved by a priori feeding planning through better monitoring of on-site conditions. Eccentric joints are commonly used to join particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) in cabinet furniture construction. Screws and screws with plastic sockets are offered by many manufacturers for these kinds of joints, yet little information is available concerning their withdrawal capacity in these materials. Research reported here indicates that face withdrawal strengths of the screws differ slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer in particleboard and MDF, whereas withdrawal strengths of screws with plastic sockets differ greatly from one manufacturer to another. Furthermore, the withdrawal capacity of the screws was found to correlate with the density of both particleboard and MDF.  相似文献

In December 2009, numerous adults and larvae of the nipa palm hispid Octodonta nipae (Maulik) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Cassidinae) were found for the first time on the island of Cyprus, in unopened young leaves of Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman palm species. All infested palms of this species evinced serious decline with all young leaves showing signs of attack, but the beetles and larvae themselves were found only in fronds from the central shoot.  相似文献

Abstract

Two morphological variants of Echinochloa crus‐galli were collected from rice fields of an area in Greece where rice has been grown for over a decade and growers have recently been complaining about reduced effectiveness of propanil. Seedling response of the two variants to propanil was compared with that of E. crus‐galli collected from vegetable fields in another area where rice has never been grown. Initial contact toxicity of propanil was similar in all collections. Growth inhibition thereafter was clearly different, resulting in death of the E. crus‐galli from vegetables but not of the E. crus‐galli from rice. The latter could overcome initial toxicity and resume growth at 8 kg/ha of propanil, whereas the former was killed at 2–4 kg/ha. Prevalence of E. crus‐galli forms of higher tolerance resulting from selection through rice husbandry and/or repeated use of propanil may account for the reduced effectiveness of propanil in the area of intensive rice growing.  相似文献

An extensive survey ofBemisia tabaci populations covering the southern half of the island of Cyprus was conducted in 2006 and 2007 in order to define the biotype status of the pest. Sampling was done both on protected and outdoor cultivations of vegetables and ornamental plants. Biotype identification was performed using molecular diagnostics based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxydase I gene. In October 2008 an insect palm borer was found for the first time on the island of Cyprus, in the Paphos district, on palms of Chamaerops humilis and Washingtonia filifera. By December 2008 the species was found on isolated palm plants of Phoenix roebelenii. The species was identified as the palm borer Paysandisia archon (Burmeister 1880) at the Agricultural Research Institute, Nicosia. Infested palm trunks and leaves were bored by the Paysandisia larvae. Bored trunk and crown were covered with plugs of debris.  相似文献
