Gill‐associated virus (GAV) was found to be associated with decreased prawn, Penaeus monodon, production when prawns from three farms (n = 45 ponds, 1800 prawns) were monitored for GAV over the production season using a graded RT‐nPCR. The grading system used was a visualization of either the outer or inner nested PCR products. Prevalence and loading of GAV were associated with disease severity. Ponds with a higher initial prevalence and a larger increase in GAV load over the production period suffered disease outbreaks. Ponds with low initial prevalence of GAV but a larger increase in prevalence and large increase in load over the production period suffered chronic disease with no disease outbreak identified, yet low production. However, the ponds with moderate to low initial prevalence of GAV with a low increase in prevalence and load of GAV over the production period incurred no disease outbreak and comparatively high production. Ponds with GAV prevalence greater than 75% at 1 month post‐stocking should be considered for termination as they have a high probability (95%) of having a disease outbreak. Emergency harvest when a disease outbreak occurs will significantly limit mortality losses.  相似文献

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of resistance to macrocyclic lactone (ML) anthelmintics over a 3-year period on sheep farms in the Taihape area, and to determine associations between the presence of ML resistance and farm management practices. METHODS: All farmers with >1,000 lambing ewes served by one veterinary practice in the Taihape area of the central North Island of New Zealand were invited to take part in the study (n=157); respondents were selected on their willingness to participate. Resistance to ML was measured during 2004-2006, using a standard faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) and a half dose of oral ivermectin (IVM; 0.1 mg/kg; n=84). Additional FECRTs were conducted separately on some farms, using full doses of IVM (n=47), levamisole (LEV; n=49), a benzimidazole (BZ; n=76), and a BZ/LEV combination (n=42). Resistance was defined as <95% faecal nematode egg count reduction (FECR) 7-10 days post-treatment. Larval cultures were performed on pooled faecal samples from all pre- and post-treatment groups for which any positive faecal nematode egg counts (FEC) were recorded. To ascertain whether particular management or drenching strategies were associated with the presence of resistance, a questionnaire comprising 50 questions was developed, and each farmer interviewed individually. RESULTS: Of all farmers invited, 84/157 (54%) participated in this study. Based on undifferentiated FEC, ML resistance to the half-dose IVM was evident on 46/84 (55%) participating farms. The majority of these cases (71%) involved Ostertagia (Teladorsagia) circumcincta. Resistance was also evident to full doses of IVM on 22/47 (47%), BZ on 41/76 (54%), LEV on 18/49 (37%), and BZ/LEV on 2/42 (5%) farms. Positive associations (p<0.05) were evident between the presence of ML resistance and management practices, such as: weaning over half of the lambs onto paddocks not grazed by lambing ewes since June; not always returning lambs to the same paddock after drenching; and the use of visual signs to assess 'worminess'. Measuring drench efficacy in January to March rather than later in the year, and presence of resistance to BZ or LEV were associated with a higher apparent prevalence of ML resistance (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Anthelmintic resistance, and particularly ML resistance, was widespread on sheep farms in the Taihape area, and mostly involved O. circumcincta. The prevalence of resistance was lower on farms on which management practices, particularly those involving lambs, maintained refugia of unselected nematodes. Further investigation is required to develop control strategies which minimise selection for resistant worms, and how these may vary with climate.  相似文献

SUMMARY Groups of White Shorthorn calves, stanchioned to prevent self-grooming and given high or low levels of nutrition, were exposed to artificial infestations of the cattle louse, Linognathus vituli. Undernutrition caused a significant (P = 0.03) increase in lice numbers. Lice did not significantly affect percentages of packed cells, lymphocytes, polymorphs and eosinophils or the number of red and white cells. Calves were always able to control lice infestations without self-grooming.  相似文献

Salt tolerance of mature Williams Bon Cretien pear trees was assessed in a field trial on a duplex, slowly permeable clay loam. The trees were irrigated with a range of salinities; electrical conductivity of irrigation water (ECw) of 0.2 to 1.4 dS/m by flood for seven years or 0.2 to 2.1 dS/m by microjet sprinklers for nine years. Water-table levels were maintained below 3 m by a groundwater pump. Yield and leaf ion content were assessed during the treatment period. Aspects of growth and physiology were monitored in the 0.2 and 2.1 dS/m microjet treatments during the seventh irrigation season.Soil profile salinities varied between 3.0 and 4.3 dS/m for the most saline flood treatment and from 1.5 to 2.6 dS/m for the most saline microjet treatment. Soil sodicity (sodium absorption ratio) increased during the experiment, reaching a maximum of 9 in the most saline treatments. The salinity treatments caused reduced yields after seven years. In the most saline treatment (ECw = 2.1 dS/m, microjet-irrigated), yield decreased to about 60 and 50% of the control in the eighth and ninth years, respectively, and 40% of trees were dead in the ninth year. Leaf ion concentrations (in January) of the most saline treatment were at excess levels (>0.1% Cl and >0.02% Na) from 1982 to 1990. There were significant (P<0.01) negative linear relationships between yield in 1990 and leaf Na and Cl, measured both in 1990 and in 1989. During the seventh season of saline irrigation, lateral shoot growth was reduced, leaves and fruit were smaller and leaf fall was earlier in the 2.1 dS/m treatment compared with the control. Dawn and midday water potential and osmotic potential were not significantly affected by saline irrigation. Midday CO2-assimilation rates (A) and leaf conductance to water vapour diffusion (g) were similar for 2.1 dS/m irrigated and control trees, however there was a trend towards a reduction in A and g of these salt-treated trees late in the irrigation season when leaf Na and Cl had increased to 250 and 240 mM (tissue water basis) respectively.  相似文献

A computer model (NEMAT) of the life cycle of sheep nematodes and of the epidemiology of nematodiasis in sheep was constructed. Its purpose is to predict the development of nematodiasis in weaner sheep and to determine optimum nematode control programmes. It has been developed for use in western Victoria, Australia, but it should also be of use in other localities.NEMAT simulates the growth of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) pasture and weaner sheep and the development of populations of the sheep nematodes Ostertagia spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. The development and death rate parameters of the free-living stages of these nematodes were estimated by a direct search optimisation procedure specifically developed for this study. The death rates of the parasitic stages of Ostertagia spp. were determined in a field experiment and expressed as a function of the rate of infection and the time of exposure to infection. Other probability density functions and deterministic functions needed to complete the quantification of the sheep-nematode system were derived from published reports or personal communications.NEMAT was validated against data from two independent field experiments carried out in western Victoria. Predicted serial measurements of pasture availability, liveweights, total nematode counts, nematode eggs per gram of faeces and numbers of infective nematode larvae per hectare were compared with those actually observed. The predicted and observed measurements were subjectively similar and could not be differentiated statistically by spectral analysis.NEMAT was then used to evaluate some nematode control programmes in western Victoria. Using observed weather data, it simulated the continuous development of nematode populations during 1957–1976 on pastures set stocked on the 1st of January each year with recently drenched weaner sheep. If sheep were drenched in only one month of the year, the effect of this drench on liveweights and woolweights at the end of the year was greatest if it was given in February. There was a progressive decline in final liveweights and woolweights if it was given in subsequent months to December. If sheep were drenched in February and given a second drench in any one of the remaining months of the year, the effects of this second drench on final liveweights and woolweights was greatest if it was given at the autumn break. A drench in February and a drench and shift to ‘clean’ pasture (<104 nematode larvae per hectare) in July were always sufficient to limit the mean yearly effects of nematodiasis to 1 kg in liveweight and 0·1 kg in woolweight. When such a shift was not possible, a drench in February, another at the autumn break and 0–5 drenches in winter and spring were required to attain similar productivity. The number and timing of these drenches after the autumn break depended on the daily effects of weather on the nematode population and could be determined only by a model of the sheep-nematode system such as NEMAT.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the sensitivity of the ELISA used in dairy cattle herds participating in the Victorian Bovine Johne's Disease Test and Control Program (TCP). PROCEDURE: The percentage of ELISA reactors in age and test cohorts was estimated from age-specific test data derived from TCP herds with long testing histories. Age-distribution data from production-tested herds enabled estimation of reactor rates in animals that were culled or died. RESULTS: ELISA sensitivities at the first test round in herds achieving five, six and seven annual herd tests were 16.1, 14.9 and 13.5% respectively. The ELISA sensitivity in 2, 3 and 4-year-old animals at the first test round in herds testing seven times was 1.2, 8.9 and 11.6% respectively but remained between 20 and 30% in older age-groups. CONCLUSION: The sensitivity of the ELISA is considerably lower than previous estimates, probably because previous estimates were predominantly measured against faecal culture, which has subsequently been shown to have low sensitivity itself, and did not appreciate the long period that appears to precede detectable faecal excretion in most animals.  相似文献
