Abstract. Samples of water, sediment and fish were collected from six commercial channel catfish, Ictalurus punctalus (Rafinesque), ponds from May to October and analysed for muddy-odour producing compounds. Three episodes of off-flavour in the fish occurred in late summer. The episodes were of 2–3 months' duration and correlated with the levels of 2-methylisoborneol in water, sediment and fish. Oscillatoria agardliii was the dominant phytoplankton in ponds with off-flavour fish. Other known muddy odour-producing compounds such as geosmin, 2-isopropyl-3-mcthoxypyrazinc, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine and 2-isobutyl-6-methoxypyrazinc were not detected in the water sediment or at concentrations greater than 5·0 ng/l.  相似文献

The Damaraland mole‐rat is a subterranean mammal exhibiting extreme reproductive skew with a single reproductive female in each colony responsible for procreation. Non‐reproductive female colony members are physiologically suppressed while in the colony, exhibiting reduced concentrations of plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) and a decreased response of the pituitary, as measured by the release of bioactive LH, to an exogenous dose of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH). Removal of the reproductive female from the colony results in an elevation of LH and an enhanced response of the pituitary to a GnRH challenge in non‐reproductive females comparable to reproductive females, implying control of reproduction in these individuals by the reproductive female. The Damaraland mole‐rat is an ideal model for investigating the physiological and behavioral mechanisms that regulate the hypothalamo–pituitary–gonadal axis. In contrast, we know less about the control of reproduction at the level of the hypothalamus. The immunohistochemistry of the GnRH system of both reproductive and non‐reproductive female Damaraland mole‐rats has revealed no significant differences with respect to morphology, distribution or numbers of immunoreactive GnRH perikarya. We examined whether the endogenous opioid peptide beta‐endorphin was responsible for the inhibition of the release of the GnRH from the neurons indirectly by measuring LH concentrations in these non‐reproductive females following single, hourly and 8 hourly injections of the opioid antagonist naloxone. The results imply that the endogenous opioid peptide, beta‐endorphin, is not responsible for the inhibition of GnRH release from the perikarya in non‐reproductive females. Preliminary data examining the circulating levels of cortisol also do not support a role for circulating glucocorticoids. The possible role of kisspeptin is discussed.  相似文献

Bacterial endocarditis and inflammatory joint disease in the dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The main clinical features of 12 cases of bacterial endocarditis were lameness, pyrexia, lethargy, anorexia and systolic cardiac murmurs. The lameness varied from generalised stiffness to an inability to stand and walk. Multiple joint involvement was typical. Two types of joint pathology were identified. A marked synovitis with granulation tissue sometimes covering the articular cartilage was present in some joints associated with the presence of bacterial organisms. Other joints proved sterile and showed a milder synovial pathology. In many dogs both an infective arthritis and a non-infective arthritis co-existed. Bilaterally symmetrical joint involvement was typical of the non-infective arthritis. The pathogenesis of the latter was likely to involve the deposition of circulating immune complexes (bacterial antigens, antibody and complement) in the synovium. The infective arthritis was presumed to be secondary to embolic disease, ie, the spread of infected emboli from the heart valve to the joints. Treatment was unsuccessful in all cases.  相似文献

Field assessment of resistance to powdery mildew in mature wheat plants   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
Rankit transformation of mildew scores was used in regression analyses to compare the times and methods of scoring resistance. This showed that time and method of assessment significantly altered the relative rank positions of different cultivars. Examination of 10 cultivars in detail showed that changes in rank were associated with differences in organ resistance.
Whole plot assessments based on a 0–9 scale provided a rapid and reliable means of ranking cultivars. Where possible, and particularly for breeders, at least two assessments are recommended, the first at or soon after flowering to estimate foliar infection, and the second 2 or 3 weeks later to estimate ear infection. For general comparisons of cultivars, sufficient information may be acquired from a single assessment when all plant organs are present and when the disease has had time to become well established.  相似文献

Sixty-eight cases of cortical bone sequestration in 67 equine patients were reviewed with regard to the clinical presentation, method of treatment, and outcome. All lesions were located in skeletal areas with minimal soft tissue coverage, with 53% of them in the metatarsal and metacarpal bones. At the time of admission, 60% of the patients with limb lesions were lame; the majority improved with therapy. After sequestrectomy, there was a trend for surgical wounds which could be managed by primary closure to heal more rapidly (3.8 weeks) than wounds which required second intention healing (6.4 weeks). The appearance of healed wounds, as evaluated by owners, was acceptable in 45 cases. Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the healed wounds in 22 cases suggested a need to address the issue of cosmetic results.  相似文献

Clinical cases of pelvic disease in the cat were surveyed over a 5 year period and were classified into proximal femoral epiphyseal separation and femoral neck fracture (19-6%), anterodorsal hip luxation (19-6%), pelvic fracture (34%), sacroiliac separation (16%), sacral and coccygeal fracture separation (7-2%) and neoplasia (3-1%).
Treatment of proximal femoral epiphyseal separation and femoral neck fracture by excision arthroplasty gave a more rapid return to soundness compared with conservative treatment. The majority of hip luxations responded well to external reduction and restricted exercise for 2-4 days. All cases of pelvic fract. ure were treated conservatively (2-14 days of 'cage-rest') and showed marked improvement within 2 weeks. Radiographic and clinical assessment of these revealed that the fractured bones eventually stabilized in their displaced positions. Sacral and coccygeal fracture separations required careful evaluation for bladder function and some cases needed tail amputation. Certain complications associated with conservative treatment of pelvic injuries in cats have been considered although in no case did these prove a serious clinical problem. Two cases of giant cell sarcoma and one of spindle cell sarcoma, of periosteal origin, were included in the survey.  相似文献
