The possible involvement of salicylic acid in systemic acquired resistance ofCucumis sativus againstSphaerotheca fuliginea was studied. Cucumber plants were inoculated with tobacco necrosis virus on the cotyledons and the level of endogenous salicylic acid in the first true leaf was determined by gas chromatography. Salicylic acid increased continously from the second day after virus inoculation to the fifth day, when the same leaf was inoculated withSphaerotheca fuliginea. In healthy plants, the efficiency of exogenous salicylic acid in inducing resistance was assayed by applying aqueous solutions at different times beforeSphaerotheca fuliginea inoculation. To evaluate the level of induced resistance, the following parameters were examined by light microscopy: percentage of conidial germination, length of the hyphae derived from single conidia, number of haustoria, percentage of epidermal cells with lignified walls and of necrotic cells underlying fungal hyphae. In treated plants conidial germination was reduced, the total length of the hyphae was shorter, the number of haustoria was lower and the haustorium-containing epidermal cells had more frequently lignified walls. Moreover, an evident increase in callose deposition was observed leading to the formation of oversized papillae around the penetration pegs. These results indicate that the application of salicylic acid before inoculation withSphaerotheca fuliginea reduces the intensity of the infectious process and that salicylic acid is involved in the expression of systemic resistance in cucumber challenged by the biotrophic pathogenSphaerotheca fuliginea. 相似文献

Four adult mutant nackt mice, which demonstrate alopecia and CD4+ T-cell deficiency, and two outbred SENCAR mice (sentinels) were presented for routine health surveillance. Lesions were not observed at necropsy. Microscopically, all four nackt mice demonstrated multiple concretions that were 30-100 microm in diameter, irregularly rounded to oval, nonbirefringent, and amphophilic to basophilic. Many of the concretions appeared attached to or within the alveolar walls of all lung lobes. Approximately half of the concretions had irregular fracture lines. All concretions were periodic acid-Schiff positive, and Von Kassa staining revealed diffuse calcification. None of the concretions were associated with inflammatory cell infiltrates, and metaplastic ossification was not evident. A diagnosis of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis, a rare disease in both humans and animals, was made based on the size and location of the concretions and the lack of an inflammatory response. The carotid artery of clinically normal goats was examined, using duplex ultrasonography and arteriography. The diameter of the carotid artery was measured by use of two-dimensional ultrasonography and Doppler ultrasonography, respectively, before and after xylazine administration. The diameter of the artery was also measured by use of an arteriography technique in halothane-anesthetized goats. There was no significant difference between the mean diameter of the carotid artery measured by ultrasonography in conscious nonsedated goats and that determined by arteriography in goats under halothane anesthesia. On the other hand, ultrasonography of xylazine-sedated goats revealed an increase of carotid artery diameter of 20 to 30%. There was no change in the velocity of blood flow after xylazine administration. 相似文献

The successful application of an interstitial brachytherapy course is reported in a 14-month-old male Anglo European Studbook (AES) foal for the treatment of a recurrent dermal vascular hamartoma at the dorsal aspect of the pastern on the right hindlimb. The lesion was irradiated four times over 4 days to a total dose of 28 Gy. Progressive tumour shrinkage and necrosis were observed over 2 months. No significant acute side effect was reported at the end of the treatment, with excellent and long-lasting cosmetic results observed. The only reported late effect was permanent leukotrichia within the treated area, which remained otherwise tumour-free 1224 days after treatment. Results of this report suggest the potential use of radiation therapy (and specifically brachytherapy techniques), as an effective and safe treatment modality for vascular malformations in horses. 相似文献

Divergent selection for heading time was performed in two F2 barley population. Five populations were obtained for each cross: F5 SSD (unselected control), 3E and 3L (from three cycles of selection for earliness or lateness), 2E1L and ZL1E (from two cycles of direct and one of reverse selection). These populations, together with corresponding parents and F2 generations, were evaluated over two years. The response to selection was 5.6 and 6.5 days inane direction (earlier heading) and 7.7 and 6.7 clays in the other direction (later heading) in the two crosses, respectively. 3E and 3L populations were highly transgressive as compared to their parents. A sizeable amount of genetic variability was still present after two cycles of selection. Heading was probably controlled by a polygenic system with prevailing additive effects and alleles for earliness and earliness somewhat equally distributed in the parents. Selection fur heading time led to significant changes in plant height, yield and kernel weight. Early progenies were higher yielding than lace ones. 相似文献

Summary This study analyzes the components of phenotypic variation for abscisic acid (ABA) content in maize (Zea mays L.) leaves and the correlations with drought sensitivity index (DSI) and silk delay (SD), involved in the reaction to water deficit. Eight early- and seven medium-maturity inbreds were examined in field trials: in 1990 with low irrigation volume and in 1991 with low and high irrigation volumes. ABA concentration and DSI were investigated at growth stages (S) corresponding to stem elongation (S3), appearance of the first husks (S4), and mid-end of silking (S5). The ABA concentration was significantly higher in conditions of water deficit and in the later growth stage. The genetic component for ABA concentration attained higher relative values than those shown by DSI in the same growth stages and by SD; moreover, it increased from growth stage 3 to stage 5. The genotype × year and genotype × irrigation volume interactions were smaller for ABA concentration than for DSI and SD. The broad sense heritability on a plant basis, estimated in drought conditions, for ABA concentration ranged from 21.4 to 55.1% according to maturity group and growth stage. A wide variation was observed among lines for ABA concentration: the medium-maturity group showed a three-fold range (from 219 to 605 ng ABA g–1 dry weight). No clear relationships between ABA concentration, DSI and SD were found. These results indicate the feasibility of a selection for ABA concentration within segregating populations derived from crosses between the inbred lines herein tested.Abbreviations ABA -

There were two objectives in the study: 1) To determine exchangeable K and non-exchangeable K in soils with different potassium depletion levels and mineralogy as plant sources 2) To establish a relationship between the mineralogy vs exchangeable K (Ke) and non-exchangeable K (Kne) mobilization. An extraction experiment of soils was carried out in a greenhouse, with a total of 6 consecutive crops of ryegrass. Different supply rates for plant K were determined by Ke and Kne mobilization according to the soil intensity of use. The contribution of the Ke was greater and generated higher amount of K uptake during maximum availability period (from 0 to the 1st harvest) than in the later period when soil K was already depleted. For this the initial exchangeable K and the illite concentration of soils accounted for almost 100% (R2 = 0.981 P=0.01) of the K taken up by ryegrass. For the following period (from the 2nd harvest to the 6th), Kne forms became more important. Plant K supply was not only a result of initial exchangeable K and illite concentration but presumably also of primary K-bearing minerals. 相似文献
