Streptococcus uberis is an important cause of mastitis in dairy cows throughout the world, particularly during the dry period, around the time of calving, and during early lactation. Strategies for controlling S. uberis mastitis have not received adequate research attention and are therefore poorly defined and inadequate. Objectives of the present study were to evaluate the efficacy of extended therapy regimens with pirlimycin for treatment of experimentally induced S. uberis intramammary infections in lactating dairy cows during early lactation and to evaluate the usefulness of the S. uberis experimental infection model for evaluating antimicrobial efficacy in dairy cows. The efficacy of extended pirlimycin intramammary therapy regimens was investigated in 103 mammary glands of 68 dairy cows that became infected following experimental challenge with S. uberis during early lactation. Cows infected with S. uberis in one or both experimentally challenged mammary glands were randomly allocated to three groups, representing three different treatment regimens with pirlimycin, including 2-day (n = 21 cows, 31 mammary quarters), 5-day (n = 21 cows, 32 quarters), and 8-day (n = 26 cows, 40 quarters). For all groups, pirlimycin was administered at a rate of 50 mg of pirlimycin hydrochloride via intramammary infusion. A cure was defined as an experimentally infected mammary gland that was treated with pirlimycin and was bacteriologically negative for the presence of S. uberis at 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after treatment. Experimental S. uberis intramammary infections were eliminated in 58.1% of the infected quarters treated with the pirlimycin 2-day regimen, 68.8% for the 5-day regimen, and 80.0% for the 8-day regimen. Significant differences (P <.05) in efficacy were observed between the 2-day and 8-day treatment regimens. The number of somatic cells in milk decreased significantly following therapy in quarters for which treatment was successful in eliminating S. uberis. However, there was no evidence to suggest that extended therapy with pirlimycin resulted in a greater reduction in somatic cell counts in milk than the 2-day treatment. The S. uberis experimental infection model was a rapid and effective means of evaluating antimicrobial efficacy during early lactation at a time when mammary glands are highly susceptible to S. uberis intramammary infection. 相似文献

Fifty-one chronically infected lactating dairy cows were used to evaluate the efficacy of extended pirlimycin therapy regimens for treatment of intramammary infections by environmental Streptococcus spp and Staphylococcus aureus. Cows (n = 47) with one or more infected mammary quarters were blocked by parity and randomly allocated to one of three groups for treatment with pirlimycin (50 mg/mammary quarter) as follows: one treatment per day for 2 days (n = 36 infected mammary quarters); one treatment per day for 5 days (n = 36 infected mammary quarters); and one treatment per day for 8 days (n = 20 infected mammary quarters). Four cows with nine infected mammary quarters were included as untreated controls. Milk samples from each mammary quarter were collected 7 days before treatment, immediately before treatment, and weekly for 4 weeks after the final treatment for microbiological evaluation. A bacteriologic cure was defined as a treated, infected quarter that was bacteriologically negative for the presence of previously identified bacteria at weekly intervals after treatment. Efficacy of pirlimycin therapy against intramammary infections caused by environmental Streptococcus spp and S. aureus was 44.4%, 61.1%, and 95.0% for the 2-, 5-, and 8-day treatment regimens, respectively. None of the infections in the untreated control quarters was cured. Significant differences in efficacy were detected between all pirlimycin groups and the untreated control group, between the 8- and 2-day treatment regimens, and between the 8-day and 5-day treatment regimens (P < or = .05). Results of this study indicate that extended pirlimycin therapy was effective in eliminating intramammary infections caused by environmental streptococci and S. aureus in lactating dairy cows. 相似文献

Heart disease has been described in the chinchilla and, with increasing popularity as a pet, the demand for diagnostic evaluation and treatment has increased. The goal of this study was to determine reference values for echocardiographic measurements in chinchillas and the effect of anesthesia on these measurements. Seventeen clinically healthy adult chinchillas were studied. All animals were anesthetized with isoflurane by mask. Standard echocardiographic views were used. A difference was seen in the echocardiographic measurements for left ventricular systolic dimension, fractional shortening, aortic (Ao) diameter, left atrial (LA) diameter, ratio of LA diameter to Ao diameter, and peak flow velocities and ejection times for Ao and pulmonary artery flows between awake and anesthetized chinchillas. 相似文献

Installation of pipeline utilities (oil, natural gas, water) in central Canada prior to the 1970s often resulted in extensive mixing of topsoil with subsoil materials within the easements due to largely unregulated construction practices. The main objectives of this study were (1) to develop a simple field protocol for the rapid delineation of the zone of topsoil disturbance (or topsoil–subsoil mixing) around buried utilities on agricultural land in southern Ontario, and (2) to characterize the zone of topsoil disturbance in the vicinity of an existing pre-1970s pipeline in terms of agronomically important soil properties. The study was carried out at six farm sites chosen along a pipeline easement (30+ years old) in southern Ontario. Soil organic carbon content, CaCO3 content and pH were found to be useful in delineating the zone of topsoil disturbance around the buried utility. Standardized laboratory techniques for determination of these three soil attributes were used to analyse surface soil samples (Ap horizons) taken at 1·5 m intervals along 45·7 m long transects oriented perpendicular to the easement. In addition, rapid field tests for these same three variables were adopted/developed and tested, and two portable instruments were evaluated for their usefulness for in situ soil property measurements. In particular, a Minolta™ CR-310 Chroma Meter was successfully used to relate moist soil colour to the organic carbon content of the surface soil. The chromaticity coordinate a* (CIE L*a*b* colour space notation) was shown to provide good estimates of organic carbon content for soils of medium to fine texture in this region of Ontario. The zone of topsoil disturbance was most often characterized by an appreciable increase in per cent CaCO3 equivalent and pH, and a decrease in organic carbon content (dilution), over the pipeline trench when compared to off-easement areas. The zone of topsoil disturbance was usually a minimum of 15 m wide (i.e. the approximate width of the original trench and workspace areas during construction), and frequently much wider due most likely to wet soil conditions at the time of construction, agricultural tillage translocation of topsoil over time, and other factors. It is recommended that rapid on-site determinations of the zone of topsoil disturbance should be based primarily on field estimates of CaCO3 content (10 per cent HCl) and organic carbon content (a* chromaticity coordinate using a portable colorimeter). As ferrets are anatomically and physiologically similar to dogs and cats, the basic elements of ferret examination, disease processes, and preventive health are familiar to small-animal practitioners. Like other domestic carnivores, ferrets are tolerant of handling and medical procedures, especially compared with rabbits, rodents, and most nondomestic mammals. These characteristics make ferrets amenable to many of the highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic techniques that are now available in small-animal practice. Veterinarians who wish to add ferrets to their practices should be familiar with the ferret literature, but they should not forget to draw from the wealth of knowledge in canine and feline medicine when managing unusual or difficult ferret cases. 相似文献

A gas chromatography equipped with a flame photometric detector operating in the phosphorus mode provided a sensitive method for determining residues of famphur, O,O-dimethyl O-[p-(dimethylsulfamoyl)phenyl]phosphorothioate, and its oxygen analog in reindeer and cattle tissues. With extraction and cleanup, 0.025 ppm famphur and 0.06 ppm oxygen analog could be detected in the body tissues. Recoveries of 73-100% were obtained from fat, muscle, liver, and kidney. 相似文献
