Ten commercial stocks of rhubarb cv. Timperley Early were found to be infected with turnip mosaic, arabis mosaic and to a lesser extent cherry leaf roll, strawberry latent ringspot and cucumber mosaic viruses. Significant yield differences were recorded between the stocks in forcing experiments, but these were not related to virus incidence. The performance of a mixture of these infected commercial stocks was compared with that of virus-tested stocks in canning, early green-pulled, and forcing experiments. A significant yield advantage was recorded in the first 2 years from the virus-tested stock harvested for canning, but not in the other two experiments. Of the five viruses isolated, turnip mosaic most frequently reinfected virus-tested stocks and there appeared to be a connection between reinfection of the healthy plants and subsequent reduction in their yield.  相似文献

Objective— To compare the biomechanical cyclic fatigue properties of 2 and 3 parallel transarticular 5.5 mm cortical screws used in arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint.
Study Design— Randomized block design, for horse, fixation method (2 versus three 5.5 mm cortical screws), side (right, left) and end (front, hind) in cadaveric equine limbs.
Sample Population— Cadaveric adult equine fore- and hindlimbs (n=5 pairs each).
Methods— Two parallel 5.5 mm cortical screws were inserted in lag fashion, transarticularly through the PIP joint in 1 limb of a pair, and in the contralateral limb, three 5.5 mm cortical screws were inserted in similar fashion. Constructs were then tested in 3-point bending in a dorsal-to-palmar (plantar) direction using a materials testing machine using a cyclic load of −500 to −3500 N at a rate of 6 Hz.
Results— There was no significant difference in displacement at failure, force at failure or number of cycles between limbs. Forelimb constructs tended to fail at a greater mean displacement than hindlimb constructs but this difference was not significant ( P =.06). There was no statistical difference in any tested biomechanical variable between left- and right-sided limbs.
Conclusions— There was no significant difference in the number of cycles to failure for the 2 methods tested.
Clinical Relevance— Two 5.5 mm cortical screws inserted in parallel for PIP joint arthrodesis is surgically simpler, results in comparable biomechanical performance in the current model and should perform as well as three 5.5 mm screws under cyclic fatigue conditions.  相似文献

Whole body magnetic resonance imaging (whole body MR imaging) could potentially provide accurate cancer staging as a single imaging modality. This study was done to develop a whole body MR imaging protocol for a 1.5T MR instrument using four normal Beagle dogs (Phase 1) and then to assess the protocol's feasibility in cancer-bearing dogs (Phase II). In Phase I, anesthetized dogs were placed in dorsal recumbency with limbs flexed along the torso. T1, T2, and short tau inversion recovery sequences were acquired by spin echo or fast spin echo, and also using the more rapid single shot fast spin echo and gradient echo pulse sequences. Three large overlapping fields of view (FOV) were used to visualize the entire body and the sagittal and dorsal imaging planes were compared. Relative examination time, image quality, organ visibility and signal intensity were evaluated. Phase I results were used to establish a protocol that balanced image quality with examination time. In Phase II, whole body MR imaging was done on 10 dogs with cancer. Examination times were 60-75 min. Image quality was sufficient for all known lesions to be visualized, including mass lesions, pulmonary infiltrate, and lymphadenomegaly. Skeletal detail was sufficient to visualize known neoplastic lesions of the appendicular skeleton, yet it was suboptimal because of the large FOV and use of the body coil. Additional modifications of a whole body MR imaging protocol and continued technological improvements in MR imaging will further increase its potential for veterinary cancer staging.  相似文献

Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) was isolated from Centrosema pubescens, Crotalaria incana, Lablab purpureus, Phaseolus lunatus, Senna bicapsularis, S. sophera, Vigna vexillata and an unidentified Crotalaria species growing in Uganda. Thirteen distinct isolates were characterized using symptoms, pathogenicity in differential bean cultivars, serology, immunosorbent electron microscopy, and seed and aphid transmission. Some isolates conformed with the characteristics of previously described strains of BCMNV but others showed novel properties. All isolates reinfected the natural host from which they were obtained. The origin and ecological significance of these isolates is discussed.  相似文献

Learning the principles and application of Doppler ultrasound is difficult and requires repeated practice. Flow phantoms provide a method of teaching Doppler techniques before their application in clinical patients; however, commercially available flow phantoms are expensive. Herein we describe an easily constructed, economic Doppler flow phantom, utilizing readily available products, for use as a training aid.  相似文献

Research has found that development exactions are capitalized into the price of new housing. As the price of new housing increases, one would expect to see a price rise in existing housing as well, albeit lagged to some extent. This paper presents the results of an empirical study designed to measure how much impact fees affect the price of existing, single-family dwellings. Data for this study were obtained from county property appraiser files provided by the Florida Department of Revenue. The data represent 1,055 new and 3,135 existing home sales, respectively, in Dunedin, Florida, and 7,292 existing home sales in Clearwater, Florida, from 1971-1982. On June 3, 1974, the city of Dunedin began assessing impact fees of $1,150 against all new, single-family construction. The methodology used in this paper examines the price differential of new relative to existing housing and finds that the difference disappeared after six years.  相似文献
