Spinal pain is an important clinical presentation in feline patients, but the underlying causes can often be difficult to elucidate. Dorsal spinous process impingement syndrome ('kissing spine' or in human patients 'Baastrup syndrome') is a significant cause of spinal pain in equine and human patients and radiographically is characterised by a close approximation of adjacent spinous processes with reactive bone sclerosis affecting these spinous processes. In this report we describe the first reported case of dorsal spinous process impingement syndrome in a cat causing spinal pain, and successful surgical management of the syndrome. The affected cat presented at 5 years of age for evaluation of a 7-month history of progressive thoracolumbar pain. Radiographs revealed close approximation of the dorsal spinous processes of the seventh, eighth and ninth thoracic vertebrae (T7, T8 and T9), with associated reactive bone sclerosis. Surgical resection of the T8 dorsal spinous process resulted in complete resolution of the clinical signs with no evidence of recurrence 9 months after surgery. 相似文献

The investigation was conducted on client-owned moderately arthritic dogs with two objectives: (i) to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of type-II collagen (UC-II) alone or in combination with glucosamine hydrochloride (GLU) and chondroitin sulphate (CHO), and (ii) to determine their tolerability and safety. Dogs in four groups (n = 7-10), were treated daily for a period of 150 days with placebo (Group-I), 10 mg active UC-II (Group-II), 2000 mg GLU + 1600 mg CHO (Group-III), and UC-II + GLU + CHO (Group-IV). On a monthly basis, dogs were evaluated for observational pain (overall pain, pain upon limb manipulation, and pain after physical exertion) using different numeric scales. Pain level was also measured objectively using piezoelectric sensor-based GFP for peak vertical force and impulse area. Dogs were also examined every month for physical, hepatic (ALP, ALT and bilirubin) and renal (BUN and creatinine) functions. Based on observations, significant (p < 0.05) reduction in pain was noted in Group-II, III, and IV dogs. Using GFP, significant increases in peak vertical force (N/kg body wt) and impulse area (N s/kg body wt), indicative of a decrease in arthritis associated pain, were observed in Group-II dogs only. None of the dogs in any group showed changes in physical, hepatic or renal functions. In conclusion, based on GFP data, moderately arthritic dogs treated with UC-II (10 mg) showed a marked reduction in arthritic pain with maximum improvement by day 150. UC-II, GLU and CHO operate through different mechanisms of action, and were well tolerated over a period of 150 days. 相似文献

Following head trauma, the left globe of a Red Tail Hawk showed demonstrable indentation on palpation. Recurrent anterior chamber collapse and reformation dependent on head position was the most significant clinical finding. A fracture of the scleral ossicles in the caudal portion of the scleral ring was identified in the rostrocaudal radiograph of the skull. Conservative management of the fracture resulted in phthisis bulbi. Fractured scleral ossicles have been shown radiographically in the enucleated globe but have not been previously demonstrated in the eye of the living bird. 相似文献

Abstract – Differential rates of anadromy between males and females are common in partially migratory salmonid populations, but this pattern is not fully clear for Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout/steelhead) from the limited but mixed data available. In particular, there are very few data on sex ratios of juvenile and nonanadromous (resident) fish to help assess sex composition of various life stages and life‐history types. We used a recently developed Y‐chromosome genetic marker to assess sex ratio of stream‐dwelling (i.e., juvenile and nonanadromous) O. mykiss in a small coastal basin in central California, USA. We analysed 384 samples collected from three contiguous study reaches over 3 years. Sex ratio was 1:1 among juvenile‐sized O. mykiss (<150 mm) but highly male‐skewed (83%) among nonanadromous‐sized individuals (≥150 mm), and this sex ratio × size pattern did not differ among years or study reaches. Our results suggest that the rate of anadromy differs between males and females in this basin. Our study also demonstrates the application of new genetic markers to determine sex composition of immature and nonanadromous salmonids, which will help assess sex‐specific life‐history behaviour in partially migratory populations of O. mykiss and other species. 相似文献

Summary Trials on a lyophilised vaccine prepared fromM. mycoides var.mycoides strain T1, were carried out on humpless N'dama and Baoulé cattle and on zebu cattle.
Post-vaccinal complications in some animals made the vaccine unsuitable under prevailing conditions for widespread field use
on the humpless cattle in Ivory Coast. However the post-vaccinal lesions can be controlled and the proven immunological effectiveness
of this lyophilised product have convinced the author that its use should be gradually extended as staff training and improved
facilities permit. The product was acceptable for field vaccination of the zebu herds.
The number and extent of local lesions were much reduced in herds revaccinated after one year. Serological findings based
on the complement fixation test are discussed.

Sumario Se realizaron vacunaciónes con una vacuna preparada deM. mycoides var.mycoides cepa T1, en ganado bovino N'dama sin joroba, ganado Baoulé y en ganado cebú. Las complicaciones post-vaccinales en algunos animales hizo que la vacuna no sea la adecuada considerando las condiciones prevalentes para su uso en el campo en el ganado sin joroba ne la Costa de Marfil. Sin embargo, las lesions post-vacunales pueden ser controladas y la probada efectividad inmunológica de este producto liofilizado han convencido al autor de que su uso debería de extenderse gradualmente tanto como el adiestramiento del personal y la mejora de facilidales lo permitan. El producto fue aceptable para la vacunación de campo del ganado cebú. El número y extensión de las lesions locales fue mucho mas reducido en hatos revacunados despues de un a?o. Se discuten hallazgos serológicos basados en la prueba de fijación de complemento.
Résumé Des essais avec un vaccin lyophilisé préparé avec la souche T1 deM. myco?des var.myco?des ont été effectués sur du bétail zébu et sur du bétail sans bosse des races N'dama et Baoulé. Des réactions post-vaccinales observées chez certains animaux font que ce vaccin n'est pas recommandable pour son emploi à large échelle chez le bétail taurin de la C?te d'Ivoire dans les circonstances actuelles. Cependant ces complications vaccinales peuvent être combattues et l'efficacité immunologique indubitable de ce vaccin lyophilisé a convaincu l'auteur que son emploi devrait être progressivement étendu dans la mesure oú l'entra?nement du personnel et des facilités améliorées le permettraient. Ce vaccin est satisfaisant pour la vaccination de masse dans les troupeaux de zébus. Le nombre et l'importance des réactions locales sont réduites de beaucoup chez les animaux revaccinés après un an. Des données sérologiques obtenues par la méthode de fixation du complément sont discutées.

To investigate the spatial and temporal variability of acid deposition in the urban environment a small-scale intensive network of bulk collectors has been deployed around Greater Manchester, UK. This network has been in operation since 1986. The concentrations and deposition rates of non-marine (nm) sulphate, nitrate, ammonium, calcium and hydrogen are reported for 1994. Acidity was generally lower in the city centre of Manchester where calcium concentrations were highest. Calcium compounds in the urban atmosphere effectively buffer the precipitation acidity. 相似文献
