A new approach to the interpretation of faecal egg counts using a simple "formula", is described. It is suggested that adoption of this procedure may enable the likely level and frequency distribution of strongyle worm burdens (Nematodirus excluded) in young sheep flocks to be estimated. The efficacy of levamisole and ivermectin against a morantel-resistant strain of Trichostrongylus colubriformis

A controlled slaughter trial was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin (0.2 mg/kg) and levamisole (8 mg/kg) against a morantel-resistant field strain of Trichostrongylus colubriformis in sheep. Mean worm count reductions of greater than 99% were recorded with both anthelmintics. The apparent contradiction between the high efficacy of levamisole and the common belief that resistance to levamisole and morantel is co-inherited, is discussed.  相似文献   

Sarcocystis spp. infections in naturally infected cats and dogs: levels of sporocyst production and the influence of host, environmental and seasonal factors on the prevalence of infection

Data obtained from faecal samples from 508 domestic cats and 481 dogs, previously found to have a high frequency of Sarcocystis spp. infections, were further examined to provide information on levels of sporocyst shedding and to ascertain the influence of host, environmental and seasonal factors on the prevalence of naturally acquired infections. Statistical analysis of prevalence data revealed that, of the factors examined, only host age in cats exerted any apparent influence. Infections were significantly more common in cats up to, rather than over, 6 months of age. Although they tended to be greater in dogs than cats, faecal sporocyst counts in both hosts were generally low, with the majority of infected samples containing 200 sporocysts per gram or less. In infected dogs the highest count recorded was 144,600/g with a mean of 2270/g, and in infected cats it was 11,100/g with a mean of 597/g.  相似文献   

Oxfendazole resistance in Nematodirus spathiger

The occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in a field strain of Nematodirus spathiger is reported for the first time. In a controlled anthelmintic trial with naturally-acquired infections, oxfendazole at 5 mg/ kg and levamisole at 8 mg/kg were 0 and 86% effective respectively, against this strain.  相似文献

The persistent anthelmintic effect of ivermectin as a topical treatment at 500 microg/kg was evaluated against induced infections of Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei and Dictyocaulus vivparus in calves. The results showed a highly significant (P<0.001) anthelmintic activity for at least 14 days against O. ostertagi and T.axei (>99 per cent efficacies) and for at least 28 days (98 per cent efficacy) against D. viviparus.  相似文献   

The effectiveness of benzimidazole-levamisole combination drenches in the presence of resistance to both benzimidazole and levamisole anthelmintics in New Zealand sheep

Examination of 25 cases of multiple benzimidazole and levamisole resistance, identified in sheep by faecal egg count reduction testing at the Batchelar, Lincoln and Invermay Animal Health Laboratories, showed that benzimidazole-levamisole combinations provided effective control in eight (47%) of 17 cases in which they were tested. Overall, the use of combination drenches resulted in average improvements in faecal egg count reductions of 25.6% (p<0.01) and 23.2% (p<0.05), respectively, over those achieved by the use of benzimidazole or levamisole drenches alone. The results suggest that instances of multiple resistance in which combination drenches might be effective are unlikely to be predictable either by identification of the parasites involved, or from the levels of benzimidazole or levamisole resistance present.  相似文献
