The efficacy of an oral formulation of the newly developed parasiticide, moxidectin, was tested against benzimidazole-resistant Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis, and Nematodirus spathiger, levamisole-resistant Ostertagia circumcincta, and susceptible Cooperia curticei infections in weaned lambs. Thirty-two lambs were experimentally infected with mixed doses of the above strains of nematodes. They were allocated into four treatment groups by stratified randomisation using liveweights and faecal egg counts 28 days later. One group received moxidectin at 0.2 mg/kg liveweight, one group oxfendazole at 4.5 mg/kg liveweight, one group levamisole at 7.5 mg/kg liveweight and the last group remained untreated as the control. Worm burdens in the lambs at slaughter 10 days after oral treatment confirmed the resistance status of the nematode strains used, and showed that moxidectin had a greater than 99.9% efficacy (p<0.01) against all of them. No adverse effects due to treatment with moxidectin were observed in any of the animals.  相似文献

Seven-day-old chickens were fed diets containing 18% crude protein + 0 or 1g methimazole/kg to produce either euthyroid or hypothyroid groups of birds at 28 days of age. These two groups were then offered diets containing either 0 or 1mg triiodothyronine (T(3))/kg diet. Birds were sampled at 0, 2, 5, and 8 days following the onset of the T(3) treatment. Measurements taken at these intervals included in vitro hepatic lipogenesis (IVL), growth and feed consumption, hepatic enzyme activities (malic enzyme, ME; isocitrate dehydrogenase, ICD; and aspartate amino transferase, AAT), plasma hormones (T(3); thyroxine, T(4); insulin like growth factors I, IGF-I; and insulin like growth factors II, IGF-II) and metabolites (glucose; fatty acids, NEFA; triglyerides; uric acid). Hypothyroidism decreased IVL and ME at 28 days of age; however, T(3) supplementation for 2 days restored both IVL and ME. Paradoxically, continuing T(3) replenishment for an additional 3-6 days decreased IVL without affecting ME activity. In contrast, supplemental T(3) decreased IVL in euthyroid birds, regardless of the dosing interval, but had no effect on ME activity. Methimazole decreased plasma T(3), T(4), uric acid, and IGF-I, but did not affect IGF-II at 28 days. Giving T(3) to birds previously on methimazole increased plasma IGF-I as did feeding a control diet. Supplemental T(3) increased NEFA in both euthyroid and hypothyroid birds, but only for a short period following the initiation of supplementation (2 days post-supplementation). These data may help to explain some of the apparent reported dichotomies in lipid metabolism elicited by changes in the thyroid state of animals. In addition, most metabolic changes in response to feeding T(3) occurred within 2-5 days, suggesting that changes in intermediary metabolism preceded morphological changes. In conclusion, the thyroid state of the animal will determine responses to exogenous T(3).  相似文献

An iron-sulfur compound (Fe3S2) was synthesized at pressures greater than 14 gigapascals in the system Fe-FeS. The formation of Fe3S2 changed the melting relations from a simple binary eutectic system to a binary system with an intermediate compound that melted incongruently. The eutectic temperature in the system at 14 gigapascals was about 400°C lower than that extrapolated from Usselman's data, implying that previous thermal models of Fe-rich planetary cores could overestimate core temperature. If it is found in a meteorite, the Fe3S2 phase could also be used to infer the minimum size of a parent body.  相似文献

1. Sexed broiler-type chicks were raised either under a continuous (CON) 23 h light (L) and 1 h dark (D) schedule or an increasing photoperiod (INC). From 5 to 11 d of age birds were fed either: ad libitum (AL), energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 9.414 x gBW0.67 (R1) or energy intake (kJ ME) restricted to 6.276 x gBW0.67 (R2). 2. Blood samples were taken at 4, 7, 11, 14 d of age and weekly thereafter to 49 d of age. Plasma thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin were determined. 3. CON birds had elevated plasma T3 concentrations to 21 d of age, and greater plasma T4 concentrations at 11 and 21 d of age concurrent with greater food intake. Elevated plasma T3 concentrations in INC birds at 28 d of age coincided with lower plasma IGF-I concentrations at a time when growth and food intake were greater than CON birds. 4. Food restriction elevated plasma insulin and T4 but depressed plasma T3 and IGF-I. Plasma T3 was greater for food-restricted birds at 21 d of age, but subsequently, was generally lower than ad libitum-fed birds which may account for a lack of complete 'catch-up' in growth. 5. Plasma T3 was higher in females at 11 d of age when growth was equivalent for both sexes. From 28 to 42 d, when sex differences in growth became most apparent, plasma T3 was greater in males.  相似文献

Forty-three randomly selected farms located throughout South Island, excluding the Nelson region, were surveyed for anthelmintic usage and for sheep nematodes resistant to anthelmintics.

Most farmers had used both benzimidazole and non-benzimidazole broad-spectrum drenches on their properties in previous years.

Sheep were being drenched, on average, 5.6 times within their first year of life but much less frequently thereafter. Commercial interests played the dominant role in helping farmers formulate their drenching policies. On each farm 24 numbered ewe replacement lambs, born during the spring of 1980, were sampled for faeces at the beginning of the trial to provide material for egg counts and larval cultures. The lambs were weighed and divided into three groups of eight. One group received thiabendazole (TBZ) at 66 mg/kg, the second levamisole (LEV) at 8 mg/kg while the third remained untreated as controls. All were resampled 4 to 10 days later.

On 32 (88%) of the 40 farms where drenching trials were successfully carried out during autumn 1981, the faecal egg count depression (FECD) following treatment with either drench was 100%. On one farm TBZ was less than 100% effective as gauged by FECD. LEV proved to be less than 100% effective on 7 farms. On one farm the FECD was less than 80%, on 2 between 90% and 95% and on 4 between 95% and 99%.  相似文献

1. The present study compared the effects of fasting on circulating concentrations of glucose, insulin and glucagon in male and female modern meat-type chickens (Ross 708) at three ages (19 d, 33 d and 47 d).

2. Plasma concentrations of glucose were reduced by fasting with reductions of 24.9% (19-d-old), 22.6% (33-d-old) and 17.9% (47-d-old) in broiler chickens fasted for 12 h.

3. Plasma concentrations of insulin decreased with fasting. For instance, circulating concentrations of insulin declined after 6 h of fasting by 45.7%, 54.7% and 50.0%, respectively, in 19-d-old, 33-d-old and 47-d-old broiler chickens.

4. Plasma concentrations of glucagon were increased by fasting. Plasma concentrations of glucagon were elevated by 3.79% (19-d-old), 3.51% (33-d-old) and 3.79% (47-d-old) with 6 h of fasting and remained elevated with 12 h, 18 h and 24 h of fasting.  相似文献

Thirty two barrows were used in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement to evaluate the effects of porcine somatotropin (pST) administration (USDA-pGH-B1; 0 and 100 micrograms.kg BW-1.d-1) and feed intake (FI; ad libitum [A], 1.64 [R1:80% of A] and 1.38 [R2:60% of A] kg/d) on longissimus (LM) muscle fiber characteristics of pigs growing from 25 to 55 kg live weight. The administration of pST resulted in an increase (P less than .05) in muscle fiber size (all three fiber types) and shear-force (17.1%). The percentage of muscle fiber types was not affected by pST treatment. Feeding of the diet at restricted levels (R1 and R2) resulted in smaller (P less than .05) beta R and alpha W fibers compared with feeding ad libitum. Pigs with ad libitum access to their diet had fewer alpha R fibers and more alpha W fibers in the LM compared with those fed at R1 and R2 levels. Restricted feed intake (R1 and R2) resulted in lower (P less than .05) shear-force values compared with ad libitum feeding. The present study indicates that pST administration of young barrows results in an increase in muscle hypertrophy. Restricted FI reduces both transformation from alpha R to alpha W fibers and muscle fiber hypertrophy.  相似文献
