Injections of sclerosing agents into the caudae of the epididymides of adult and prepubertal dogs induced a long-lasting and probably irreversible azoospermia. The technique is easy to do and inexpensive, does not seem to cause undesirable side effects, and appears suitable for large-scale sterilization programs in male dogs.  相似文献

Effects of propranolol on thyroid function in the dog   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect of propranolol on thyroid function was evaluated in 6 mature euthyroid Beagles. Propranolol was administered orally in doses of 20 mg given 3 times daily for 2 weeks and then increased to 40 mg given 3 times daily for an additional 2 weeks. Six age- and sex-matched, euthyroid Beagles served as controls. Serum base-line concentrations of tetraiodothyronine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and reverse triiodothyronine (rT3) were measured before propranolol administration and at weekly intervals thereafter. Thyroid response to 5 IU of aqueous thyroid stimulating hormone administered IV was monitored before propranolol administration and at the 2- and 4-week treatment intervals. The T4, T3, and rT3 concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. There were no significant differences in base-line or postthyroid stimulating hormone serum concentrations of T4, T3, or rT3 in any individual or between the treatment or control groups at any treatment interval (P greater than 0.05). Seemingly, the therapeutic use of propranolol in euthyroid dogs should not alter thyroid hormone metabolism.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of immunization with bovine luteinizing hormone receptor (LH-R) on ovarian function of cats. ANIMALS: 9 adult female domestic cats. PROCEDURE: 7 cats were immunized with 0.5 mg of LH-R encapsulated in a silastic subdermal implant (3 x 10 mm); 2 served as control cats. Receptors had 80% specific binding to 125I-human chorionic gonadotropin with a binding capacity of 2,682 pM/mg. Cats received booster injections of LH-R. Cats were induced to ovulate with luteinizing hormone (LH) releasing hormone on day 345. Samples of venous blood and vaginal cells were collected through day 395. Observation of estrus behavior continued until day 516. Serum concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, thyroid gland hormones, LH, and LH-R antibody were determined. RESULTS: LH-R antibody was detected in the sera of immunized cats within 21 days after implantation. Detection of LH-R antibody was associated with suppression of serum progesterone to < or = 0.5 ng/mL during the study period, compared with concentrations of 5 to 10 ng/mL in control cats. Immunized cats did not display signs of estrus. Release of LH after administration of LH-releasing hormone indicated an intact hypothalamic-pituitary axis but poor corpus luteum function. Serum estradiol concentrations remained between 30 to 40 pg/mL in immunized and control cats. With the decrease antibody titers, hormone concentrations returned to a pattern consistent with that during fertility. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Active immunization with LH-R suppressed corpus luteum function in cats. The effect was reversible. An LH-R-based antifertility vaccine may have clinical application in other vertebrates.  相似文献

Objective To provide information on changes in the social and educational backgrounds of veterinary students over a 10 year period in an effort to determine the extent to which they are representative of the community.
Methods Questionnaires were completed by first-year veterinary students at The University of Queensland in 1985 and 1986 (152 students), and 1995 and 1996 (154), and the data were analysed using the SAS System for Windows.
Results The gender ratio of first-year veterinary students was 50:50 (male:female) in 1985 and 1986 but 10 years later it had changed to 38:62. In 1985 and 1986 77% had come directly from school, with 43% of the total coming from government schools, 17% from Catholic schools and 34% from other private (Independent) schools. A decade later the percentage coming directly from school had decreased to 40%, that from Independent schools increased to 45% and that from cities increased from 53% to 64%. The educational backgrounds of parents varied widely though a high percentage had university degrees; mothers had received less formal education than fathers, and the educational attainments of both parents were higher at the beginning than at the end of the study. More than half (57% initially; 67% 10 years later) the fathers were in professional or managerial occupations, and a similar number (50% initially; 48% 10 years later) of mothers were teachers, nurses or clerks. The number of males from country areas decreased from 26 to 16 over this period.
Conclusion These veterinary students differed from the community generally in that progressively more were female, more were from Independent schools, their parents had more formal education and more of their parents were in professional, managerial or clerical occupations.  相似文献

An 18-year-old Appaloosa mare was examined because of squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, anorexia with pronounced weight loss, and hypercalcemia. The tumor had developed rapidly over a period of 3 months and externally extended ventrally involving the perineum and the dorsal aspect of the udder. Necropsy examination demonstrated a large primary squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva, perineum, and mammary gland with metastases to the supramammary, sublumbar, deep inguinal, and mediastinal lymph nodes. No gross renal lesions were observed and, histologically, there was only mild vacuolation of renal tubular epithelium. Based on the normal concentration of serum parathyroid hormone, the absence of evidence of hypervitaminosis D, and normal renal function, a diagnosis was made of hypercalcemia of malignancy or pseudohyperparathyroidism. The mechanism responsible for hypercalcemia was not determined, but the histologic type of the neoplasm and the clinical course suggested possible production of a humoral hypercalcemic factor by the neoplasm, similar to that demonstrated in certain types of human squamous cell carcinoma.  相似文献

Fifty Holstein dairy cows with palpable corpora lutea were divided into two groups. Twenty-five cows were given 500 micrograms of cloprostenol followed by 8 micrograms (2 mL) of buserelin, an analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and 25 were given cloprostenol followed by saline. Milk was collected for progesterone assay at the time of treatment and two days later. Differences in median progesterone concentrations before and following treatment were not significantly different between the saline and buserelin treated cows (p greater than 0.23).  相似文献

The present study was designed to compare basal and stimulated concentrations of 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and cortisol in serum of dogs fasted 12 or 18 hours (to represent overnight fasting) or 24 or 36 hours (to represent prolonged inappetence) with those of dogs that were not fasted. Twenty-five adult Beagle bitches were allotted to 5 experimental fasting groups (0, 12, 18, 24, and 36 hours). Blood samples for hormonal analyses were obtained 4, 3, 2, and 1 hour before food was removed; at the time of food removal; 1 hour after food was removed; and every 2 hours during experimental fasting until 0800 hours on the day fasting ended. Dogs were injected with 5 IU of thyrotropin, IV, and 2.2 IU of adrenocorticotropin/kg, IM, to evaluate thyroidal and adrenocortical endocrine reserves. Additional blood samples were collected 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours after injections were given. Serum concentrations of T3, T4, and cortisol were determined by validated radioimmunoassays. Body weights and ages of the dogs and food consumption during a 2-hour preliminary feeding period before dogs were fasted did not differ among fasting groups. Length of fasting did not affect serum concentrations of T3 or T4 in dogs at 12, 18, 24, or 36 hours after food was removed. Mean serum concentrations of cortisol in dogs fasted 12 or 24 hours were lower than those in dogs that were not fasted. Genetically engineered (GE) animals are likely to have an important role in the future in meeting the food demand of a burgeoning global population. There have already been many notable achievements using this technology in livestock, poultry and aquatic species. In particular, the use of RNA interference (RNAi) to produce virus‐resistant animals is a rapidly‐developing area of research. However, despite the promise of this technology, very few GE animals have been commercialised. This review aims to provide information so that veterinarians and animal health scientists are better able to participate in the debate on GE animals.  相似文献
