A Canadian warmblood foal treated for septic polyarthritis was diagnosed with bilateral congenital renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, and hydroureter at 2 weeks of age based on abdominal ultrasound and postmortem examination. Intermittent abdominal pain throughout the course of treatment was attributed to hydronephrosis and hydroureter. 相似文献

Osteochondrosis is a poorly understood condition that affects many species, including cattle. Its incidence is not fully appreciated in the cattle industry for many reasons. Most of the reports show a male, purebred predilection, but this may simply be a result of the typical population for which medical attention is sought. With the increasing value of female breeding stock, a less skewed distribution of the disease will most likely result. Distribution of lesions is similar to that in the horse, with the stifle and tarsus most commonly affected. Treatment is divided into medical and surgical options, but neither seem to be strikingly effective as of yet. Surgical techniques include arthroscopy and arthrotomy, and both have their complicating factors. How osteochondrosis as a disease will affect the cattle industry is still to be decided. If the incidence rate does increase with more animals being valued for their economic potential, then treatment options will surely be reevaluated and refined. 相似文献

Ultrasonography, angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and exploratory laparotomy of a 2-year-old wheaten terrier with lethargy, exercise intolerance, and ascites revealed segmental aplasia of the caudal vena cava with azygos continuation, complicated by thrombus formation. Surgeries were performed on the blind-ended vessel to remove thrombi, enhancing shunting of blood through the azygos vein. 相似文献

A 6-year-old, intact male Siberian husky was evaluated for a 24-hour history of vomiting and lethargy. Diagnosis of emphysematous cholecystitis was achieved based on survey abdominal radiographs, a barium contrast gastrointestinal series, and abdominal ultrasound. Diagnosis and medical and surgical management of the condition are discussed. 相似文献

Record of a chromosome number of 2n = 76, unusual for pteridophytes, in Platyzoma microphyllum R. Br. emphasizes other unique features of this monotypic Queensland fern and provides new evidence of its possible relationships. Other characteristics of this plant, which are not known among terrestrial ferns, are incipient heterospory-having two sizes of spores and a dioecious condition of the gametophytes. These and other morphological features show relationships of Platyzoma to members of the Schizaeaceae and Marsileaceae and relationships of these families to the Polypodiaceae, in which it is treated under the subfamily Platyzomatoideae. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess heritability and mode of inheritance for hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA) in Quarter Horses. ANIMALS: 1,295 horses with Quarter Horse bloodlines, including 58 horses affected with HERDA. PROCEDURE: Horses were classified as affected or unaffected or as undetermined when data were insufficient to assess phenotype. Pedigree data were analyzed to determine the probable mode of inheritance. Heritability was estimated by use of Bayesian statistical methods. RESULTS: Heritability (mean+/-SD) of HERDA was estimated to be 0.38+/-0.13, with both sexes having an equal probability of being affected. Results for evaluation of the pedigrees were consistent with a single Mendelian autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: HERDA in Quarter Horses is an inherited disease, and affected horses are more likely to produce affected offspring. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance should be considered by people making breeding decisions involving Quarter Horses when a first-degree relative has been confirmed with HERDA or has produced affected offspring. In addition, breeders whose horses have produced affected offspring can reduce the likelihood of producing affected horses in the future by avoiding inbreeding. 相似文献
