In order to determine the influences of environmental factors on seed germination and to identify the effects of germination characteristics on seedling establishment for Sasa veitchii var. hirsuta, germination experiments and a survey on current seedling dynamics were conducted in a natural habitat after mass flowering. The results of the germination experiments revealed that the seeds require a low-temperature environment for germination; those exposed to low-temperature conditions for a time similar to the length of winter (4 months of low-temperature conditions) germinated gradually, while those exposed for longer (>4 months of low-temperature conditions) germinated rapidly. These results were compatible with field observations indicating that seedlings emerged from June to October in the year after mass flowering, and they suggested this germination characteristic (i.e., variation of germination timing due to seed dormancy) may play an ecological function in spreading risk (although it may also increase the potential for seed predation). The results also revealed that stronger light and alternating temperature conditions had no effect on germination, whereas high temperatures and drying had negative effects. The outcomes of the survey on current seedling dynamics revealed that the seedling establishment ratio was high in a forest understory compared to that seen at a site where solar radiation was strong and soil water content was low. This implies that germination characteristics may promote seedling establishment in forest understory.  相似文献

Mammalian tooth crowns have precise functional requirements but cannot be substantially remodeled after eruption. In developing teeth, epithelial signaling centers, the enamel knots, form at future cusp positions and are the first signs of cusp patterns that distinguish species. We report that ectodin, a secreted bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) inhibitor, is expressed as a "negative" image of mouse enamel knots. Furthermore, we show that ectodin-deficient mice have enlarged enamel knots, highly altered cusp patterns, and extra teeth. Unlike in normal teeth, excess BMP accelerates patterning in ectodin-deficient teeth. We propose that ectodin is critical for robust spatial delineation of enamel knots and cusps.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To map central benzodiazepine receptors (BZRs) in the brain of cats by use of positron-emission tomography (PET) and [11C]flumazenil. ANIMALS: 6 male cats that weighed between 2.0 and 3.6 kg. PROCEDURE: Brain images obtained by PET evaluation of [11C]flumazenil were superimposed on T2-weighted magnetic-resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the same cats. Detailed anatomic regions, such as the cerebral cortex, striatum, thalamus, midbrain, and cerebellum, on the PET images were evident by PET-MRI registration. Regional binding of [11C]flumazenil to BZRs was quantitatively measured by use of a model with 2 tissue compartments and 4 variables. RESULTS: The highest value for distribution volume was observed in the cerebral cortex, and the lowest value was found in the midbrain of cats. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Binding of [11C]flumazenil to BZRs in the brain of cats can be quantitatively measured by use of PET with the aid of PET-MRI registration. It is difficult to diagnose changes in these neuroreceptors within the field of current veterinary science. In the future, PET should prove useful for investigating and diagnosing brain disorders in animals in clinical settings.  相似文献

Hermaphroditic organisms avoid inbreeding by a system of self-incompatibility (SI). A primitive chordate (ascidian) Ciona intestinalis is an example of such an organism, but the molecular mechanism underlying its SI system is not known. Here, we show that the SI system is governed by two gene loci that act cooperatively. Each locus contains a tightly linked pair of polycystin 1-related receptor (s-Themis) and fibrinogen-like ligand (v-Themis) genes, the latter of which is located in the first intron of s-Themis but transcribed in the opposite direction. These genes may encode male- and female-side self-recognition molecules. The SI system of C. intestinalis has a similar framework to that of flowering plants but utilizing different molecules.  相似文献

In dogs, pancreatic acinar cell injury is thought to be caused by decreased pancreatic blood flow due to heart failure. In previous our report, it demonstrated that decreased heart function causes a significant decrease in pancreatic blood flow in heart failure dog model caused by rapid ventricular pacing (RVP). However, the types of histopathological changes remain unclear. We aimed to verify the types of histopathological changes occurring in the pancreatic tissue due to decreased heart function. After RVP for 4 weeks, atrophy of pancreatic acinar cells, characterized by a decrease in zymogen granules, was observed in all areas of the pancreas. In conclusion, the result of this study suggests that attention should be paid to ischemia/hypoperfusion injury in the pancreas.  相似文献

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the mitigating effects of lime nitrogen (calcium cyanamide) and dicyandiamide (DCD) application on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from fields of green tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze]. The study was conducted in experimental tea fields in which the fertilizer application rate was 544 kg nitrogen (N) ha?1 yr?1 for 2 years. The mean cumulative N2O flux from the soil between the canopies of tea plants for 2 years was 7.1 ± 0.9 kg N ha?1 yr?1 in control plots. The cumulative N2O flux in the plots supplemented with lime nitrogen was 3.5 ± 0.1 kgN ha?1, approximately 51% lower than that in control plots. This reduction was due to the inhibition of nitrification by DCD, which was produced from the lime nitrogen. In addition, the increase in soil pH by lime in the lime nitrogen may also be another reason for the decreased N2O emissions from soil in LN plots. Meanwhile, the cumulative N2O flux in DCD plots was not significantly different from that in control plots. The seasonal variability in N2O emissions in DCD plots differed from that in control plots and application of DCD sometimes increased N2O emissions from tea field soil. The nitrification inhibition effect of lime nitrogen and DCD helped to delay nitrification of ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N), leading to high NH4+-N concentrations and a high ratio of NH4+-N /nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) in the soil. The inhibitors delayed the formation of NO3-N in soil. N uptake by tea plants was almost the same among all three treatments.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine seed production patterns in a series of flowerings from sporadic events before to after mass flowering and to clarify the relationship between the occurrence of second flowering and seed production in the first flowering of mass-flowering events for S. veitchii var. hirsuta. The results revealed that ratios of numbers of seeds to florets per inflorescence in the first and second flowerings of a mass-flowering event were as large as those in the first flowering of a sporadic-flowering event before mass flowering, and were larger than those in the second flowering of a sporadic-flowering event before mass flowering and in both flowerings of a sporadic-flowering event after mass flowering. However, estimated number of produced seeds per square meter in mass flowering was higher than that in sporadic flowering before it. This suggests that seed production is promoted in mass flowering, and that sporadic flowering beforehand can potentially contribute to successful regeneration. At a site where seeds were produced in the first flowering of a mass-flowering event, flower production and the seed germination ratio were smaller in the second flowering. Conversely, at a site where few seeds were produced in the first flowering of a mass-flowering event, there was no significant difference in flower production between the first and second flowerings, and the seed germination ratio in the second flowering was more than 40 %. This suggests that the second flowering of a mass-flowering event is related to seed production in the first flowering.  相似文献

This study was performed to investigate the factors responsible for the reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a global positioning system (GPS) when used in a forest. We investigated the relationship between the SNR values of GPS signals and the moisture in wood materials and clarified this relationship through experimentation and simulation. Although the wood material itself had a minimal effect on SNR reduction, moisture in the wood had an obvious effect. It is noteworthy that wood material with a moisture resistance quantity (Mw) of 2 g/cm2 caused a reduction of more than ~10 dB in the SNR. This Mw value corresponds to Japanese cedar with a green stem thickness of ~7 cm. Under unobstructed sky conditions, SNR is less than ~20 dB, so a reduction of 10 dB has a marked effect on GPS reception. The reduced SNR under canopies resulted from moisture in stems and the canopy. Furthermore, a simulation performed in a Japanese cedar forest revealed that 77.8% of the SNR reduction was caused by stems, 8.1% by branches, and 14.1% by needles.  相似文献

The effect of the presence of ruminal protozoa on the composition of fecal microbiota in cattle was investigated. Six castrated Holstein cattle (mean bodyweight 137 kg) were divided into two groups: three faunated and three unfaunated. The fecal bacterial composition of the faunated and unfaunated cattle was compared using a culture method and by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T‐RFLP) analysis. Approximately 0.4 to 2.3% of the bacterial cells detected by microscopy formed colonies on medium 10. The major terminal restriction fragments were detected in the T‐RFLP profiles generated by Hha I and Msp I digestion in both the faunated and unfaunated cattle. In particular, the Bacteroides group, the Clostridium coccoides group and the Clostridium leptum subgroup might be the known bacterial groups that protozoa influence by Msp I digestion. From the dendrogram analysis by T‐RFLP patterns, the faunated and unfaunated cattle were divided into two clusters, I and II, respectively. These results suggest that absence of protozoa in the rumen changes the composition of fecal bacteria.  相似文献
