Erysipelothrix septicemia in a little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor).   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
On June 25, 2002, aquarium veterinarians treated a 5-year-old, male little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor) that was acutely recumbent and dull, with inappetence of 24-hour duration. The penguin died within 10 minutes of presentation despite emergency resuscitation efforts. Gross pathologic findings consisted of pulmonary congestion and intestinal hemorrhage. Histopathologic findings included necrosis of tips of intestinal villi, increased numbers of mononuclear cells in pulmonary interstitium and hepatic sinusoids, and gram-positive bacteria in systemic microvasculature. Transmission electron microscopic examination revealed short gram-positive bacilli located in lumina of glomerular capillaries and in cytoplasm of mononuclear phagocytic cells in the lung and liver. Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae was recovered from the lung, liver, and intestine by bacteriologic culture. Amplicons from polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests using Erysipelothrix genus-specific primers and total genomic DNA extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of lung and intestine demonstrated 99% nucleotide sequence identity with 16S small-subunit ribosomal DNA of E. rhusiopathiae and E. tonsillarum. The source of infection was speculated to be fish in the diet; however, repeated attempts to detect Erysipelothrix spp. from the mucous layer of food fish using bacteriologic culture and PCR were unsuccessful. This is the first report of erysipelas in a captive aquatic bird. Details of the isolation of E. rhusiopathiae and the application of molecular testing to identify Erysipelothrix DNA in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections are given.  相似文献

This study quantified nitrogen mineralization and nitrification potentials in soils of hardwood forests of southern Ohio at three spatial scales: (1) the regional scale, represented by four study areas of 90–120 ha separated by 3–65 km, (2) the local scale, represented by three contiguous watersheds within each study area, and (3) the topographic scale, represented by xeric, intermediate, and mesic sites within each watershed, as defined by a GIS-generated Integrated Moisture Index (IMI). Organic C, NO3 pool size, net N mineralization, proportional nitrification, and net nitrification potentials all varied among study sites (i.e. at the regional scale). Using path analysis, we were able to construct scale-independent causal models explaining 30–35% of the variance in organic C and potential net N mineralization and 70% of the variance in potential net NO3 production. Site- and scale-specific differences in geology and/or land use history among study sites were likely responsible for the variation not explained by the path analysis. At the local scale, there were significant variations in organic C and inorganic N pool sizes among watersheds within a study site in two of the four study sites. In addition, most parameters we measured varied significantly along the topographic gradient (i.e. with long-term soil moisture availability/IMI). Based on our results, scaling up models of nitrification from plot scale to the regional scale should be straightforward, whereas scaling up organic C storage and N mineralization will require incorporation of independent scaling paradigms at three (or more) spatial scales.  相似文献

The Sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, is heated to millions of degrees, considerably hotter than its surface or photosphere. Explanations for this enigma typically invoke the deposition in the corona of nonthermal energy generated by magnetoconvection. However, the coronal heating mechanism remains unknown. We used observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Hinode solar physics mission to reveal a ubiquitous coronal mass supply in which chromospheric plasma in fountainlike jets or spicules is accelerated upward into the corona, with much of the plasma heated to temperatures between ~0.02 and 0.1 million kelvin (MK) and a small but sufficient fraction to temperatures above 1 MK. These observations provide constraints on the coronal heating mechanism(s) and highlight the importance of the interface region between photosphere and corona.  相似文献

We examined patterns of microarthropod abundance in oak-hickory (Quercus-Carya) forest ecosystems in southern Ohio (USA) in relation to landscape position and fire frequency. Abundances of various suborders of Acari and Collembola were determined in samples taken in June 1999 in three forested watersheds, one that had been burned annually for four consecutive springs (1996-1999), one that had been burned periodically (1996 and 1999), and an unburned control. Microarthropod abundance was significantly lower in the annually burned watershed than the periodically burned and control watersheds. Since both the periodically burned and annually burned watersheds were burned in April 1999, the lower microarthropod abundance in the annually burned watershed was not simply an immediate effect of burning. At the landscape scale, the abundance of oribatid mites was greater in xeric than intermediate or mesic landscape positions. Within any single watershed, there was no significant linear relationship between litter mass and microarthropod abundance. However, when all three watersheds were combined, there was a significant, positive relationship between litter mass and microarthropod abundance, mainly due to the annually burned watershed where there was very low litter mass and low microarthropod abundance. Both fire frequency and landscape position have significant effects on microarthropod abundance; however, those effects cannot be robustly predicted based solely on forest floor litter mass differences.  相似文献

Silviculturally-managed pine plantations within southern Ohio are chronically disturbed patches of introduced vegetation distinct from the surrounding matrix of hardwood forest. To determine the successional pathways by which such pine stands might blend back into the hardwood forest matrix under different types of silvicultural management, we determined the current status of hardwood regeneration under 24 pine stands. Stands of Pinus virginiana (Virginia pine) had the highest density of hardwood seedlings and saplings (20,560 stems ha-1) whereas P. strobus (white pine) stands averaged only 7090 hardwood stems ha-1; P. resinosa (red pine) stands were intermediate. The most abundant hardwood seedling and sapling species under pine canopies were Acer rubrum and Cornus florida. DCA ordination of the seedling + sapling assemblages clustered most of the P. resinosa and P. strobus stands in the center of the ordination along with a group of species which are common in second-growth forests of the area. P. virginiana stands, in contrast, were scattered throughout the ordination space. Most of the woody species common in second-growth forests of the region were also common in the pine understory. Multiple regression indicated that large plantations with deeper litter, higher soil pH and lower total hardwood density had the greatest abundance of mesic-site species in the understory. This relationship did not hold for P. resinosa stands, however, due to more frequent and intense silvicultural intervention. The seed bank was not an important source of woody seedlings to the understory assemblage under intact pine plantations. The vegetation of 1–4 yr old clear-cut sites was dominated by wind and bird dispersed species which were generally absent from the understory of intact plantations. We conclude these chronically disturbed planted patches will revert to matrix vegetation faster if the disturbance is allowed to end in a gradual manner through stand senescence than if it is abruptly ended by clear-cutting.  相似文献

Six yearling Hereford X Angus steers (avg 272 kg), each with ruminal, duodenal and ileal cannulas were used in a 6 X 6 Latin-square metabolism trial to evaluate the impact of NaHCO3 and trona (a ground, nonrefined ore with chemical composition NaHCO3-Na2CO3-2H2O) on site and extent of digestion of nutrients in the digestive tract. The diets were 50:50 or 90:10 (cracked corn-based concentrate:cottonseed hulls) with no buffer, 1% NaHCO3, or 1% trona. Intake, across all treatments, averaged 2.4% of body weight. Dry matter (DM) and starch digestibility (via indigestible acid detergent fiber) before the duodenum was decreased (P less than .10) with trona in the 50:50 diet. Digestibility of DM, crude protein and starch before the ileum were greater (P less than .05) in the 90:10 diet vs 50:50 diet. Total tract digestibility was similar across buffer treatments in the 90:10 diet. Addition of NaHCO3 increased (P less than .05) digestibility of dry matter and cell solubles in the 50:50 diet. Organic matter and crude protein digestibility were also increased (P less than .10) with NaHCO3. Apparent crude protein and cell solubles digestibility were greater (P less than .10) with trona than NaHCO3 in the 50:50 diet. This trial indicates that buffers provide overall enhancement of diet digestibility in mixed grain/roughage diets.  相似文献

We quantified seasonal foliar nutrient dynamics and autumnal N and P resorption of individuals of the deciduous gymnosperm Gingko biloba (maidenhair tree) growing in compacted, urban soils over two years following a single fertilization with 150 kg/ha/yr of N (and no P). Mean foliar nutrient concentrations were more similar to those reported for angiosperm trees than for other gymnosperms. During the autumn following fertilization, 46% and 48 of foliar N and P were resorbed, respectively; during the second year both increased significantly, to 68% of foliar N and 74% of foliar P. Absolute N resorption was also greater during the second year, whereas absolute P resorption did not differ significantly between years. During the second year, the level of N resorption rates was similar to that reported for Larix laricina (larch or tamarack), a needle‐leafed, deciduous gymnosperm, and greater than those reported for broad‐leafed deciduous angiosperms. The level of 1992 P resorption was similar to those reported for a wide range of gymnosperms and greater than those reported for most angiosperms. N fertilization allowed Gingko trees to maintain typical foliar N dynamics even during a persistent drought during which foliar P dynamics were significantly altered.  相似文献

Forty-eight years of landscape change on two contiguous Ohio landscapes   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
This study analyzes the current and historic structure of two contiguous, rural landscapes covering approximately 242 km2 in central Ohio, USA: a till plain landscape with relatively homogeneous topography and soils, and a moraine landscape with greater geomorphological diversity and heterogeneity. These landscapes were chosen because they were both heavily dominated by agriculture during 1900–1940 and were both initially surveyed by the metes-and-bounds system. They differed, however, in the temporal pattern of settlement and development and in the inherent agricultural capability of their soils. We combined analysis of aerial photographs from 1940, 1957, 1971, and 1988 with historical archives and other available mapped data in a GIS data base to facilitate analysis of both spatial and temporal patterns of change. On the moraine, the agricultural matrix decreased over time as forest, urban/suburban areas, and industry increased. In contrast, on the till plain agricultural landcover increased through 1988, with concommitant decreases in upland forest and oak savanna. The moraine landscape exhibited greater diversity and equitability than the till plain on each date. The till plain had its greatest diversity and equitability in 1940, whereas the moraine increased in diversity and equitability during each time period. The undulating topography of the moraine encouraged landcover dynamism rather than stability, whereas the more homogeneous till plain exhibited considerable inertia. Patch and matrix shape remained constant and predominantly angular over the 48 year study period. Differences in the physical environment, especially topography and soil capability, and the socioeconomic environment, especially agricultural policies and patterns of urbanization, resulted in these two contiguous landscapes having different trajectories of change. It is clear from this study that socioeconomic factors must be combined with the physical setting to fully understand patterns of change in human-dominated landscapes.  相似文献
