Abstract. Disturbance of the uranium-lead isotopic system in a metamict Ceylon zircon has been produced in a 2 molal NaCI solution at 500 degrees C and 1000 bars fluid pressure. Loss of radiogenic lead to the extent of 61 percent in 13 days was the most significant effect. The experimental results support the episodic rather than continuous lead-loss interpretation of natural zircon systems utilized in geochronology.  相似文献

Abstract. After satisfactory results during the mid-1970s, winter cereal yields and profitability were disappointing during 1979–81 on a Buckinghamshire farm with Ragdale series stagnogley soil. Poor soil physical conditions were diagnosed and then improved by soil loosening and mole drainage. Other inputs and management remained intensive but essentially constant. Three-year average winter wheat and barley yields rose from 5.6 and 4.9 t ha for 1979–81 to 7.4 and 6.8 t ha respectively for 1982–84. A large part of this increase could be attributed to improved soil management. The observations were made as a farm case study and not as a replicated field trial. They may nevertheless be of interest to others and of national relevance as similar soils occupy some 30% of the cereal area in England.  相似文献

A single oral dose of levamisole hydrochloride given at the rate of 12 mg/kg was believed responsible for bradycardia, tachypnea, hypothermia, cerebrocortical depression, and diarrhea in a dog. Supportive treatment and symptomatic treatment for the bradycardia were required for 4 days. In addition to these previously reported abnormalities associated with levamisole toxicosis, cerebrocortical depression and multiple foci of irritation were characterized by electroencephalography.  相似文献

Conservation efforts should be based on habitat models that identify areas of high quality and that are built at spatial scales that are ecologically relevant. In this study, we developed habitat models for the Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) in the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico to answer two questions: (1) are highly used habitats of high quality for shrikes in terms of individual fitness? and (2) what are the spatial scales of habitat associations relevant to this species? Our study area was Fort Bliss Army Reserve (New Mexico). Bird abundance was obtained from 10 min point counts conducted at forty-two 108 ha plots during a 3-year period. Measures of fitness were obtained by tracking a total of 73 nests over the 3 years. Habitat variables were measured at spatial scales ranging from broad to intermediate to local. We related habitat use and measures of fitness to habitat variables using Bayesian model averaging. We found a significant relationship between bird abundance and measures of fitness averaged across nesting birds in each plot (correlation up to 0.61). This suggests that measures of habitat use are indicative of habitat quality in the vicinity of Fort Bliss. Local- and intermediate-scale variables best explained shrike occurrence. Habitat variables were not related to any measures of fitness. A better understanding of the factors that limit individual bird fitness is therefore necessary to identify areas of high conservation value for this species.  相似文献

Ferrallitic soils were originally considered to be pedogenetically “dead”, with few pedological processes taking place except perhaps leaching. A study of the Buganda clay loam series, a widespread soil in southern Uganda, showed that although this ferrallitic soil is very highly weathered chemically, two important groups of pedogenetic processes are currently active, differentiating the B from the C horizon. These are alteration of soil structure/physical properties and clay translocation. Leaching and clay mineral transformation are not occurring. It is suggested that the pedogenetic basis for classifying soils as ferrallitic has become outdated and that the criteria used need revision.  相似文献

Habitat quality is an important consideration when identifying source and sink habitat and setting priority areas for avian conservation. The problem is that different measures may lead to different conclusions about habitat quality, and may also vary in the resources required to estimate them. Individual level measures, such as nest success, and fecundity, will often identify different high quality habitats than population level measures, such as abundance or the number of fledglings produced per unit area. We tested measures of fitness in the Black-throated Sparrow both at the individual and at the population level for six habitats in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, to explore their value as indicators of habitat quality. We compared clutch size, number of nestlings per nest, number of fledglings per successful nest, nest density, nest success, daily nest survival rate, season-long fecundity, number of fledglings produced per 100 ha, and adult abundance, in each habitat type. We also modeled source-sink dynamics to estimate the scale at which they operate, to infer survival rates, and to ascertain the relative source potential of each habitat. We found that fecundity is the best indicator of individual level habitat quality but a poor indicator of population level habitat quality. Nest success (or fecundity, if resources are available to adequately estimate it) plus nest density provide the most robust indicator of population level habitat quality, which is the level at which priority habitats for conservation should be identified. Mesa grassland and black grama grassland functioned as source habitats most consistently, and mesquite was consistently a sink but also probably a reservoir of individuals available to occupy other habitats.  相似文献

Drought is the major cause of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) yield losses in the UK and many other regions where the crop is not normally irrigated. However, drought tolerance has not been a breeding target partly because the extent of the problem was not understood, it is difficult to design effective selection screens, and because of the suspicion that few varietal differences existed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic resources necessary to improve drought tolerance. Specific objectives were to assess the degree of genotypic diversity for drought tolerance, characterise genotypic differences in response to drought, and identify sources of germplasm with greater drought tolerance than current commercial varieties. Over 3 years, 46 beet genotypes representing diverse genetic backgrounds were tested in the field under large polythene covers to impose a drought beginning approximately 40 days after emergence until harvest. Sugar, root and total dry matter yields were measured under drought and irrigated conditions. The percentage green crop cover was measured at regular intervals and used in the calculation of radiation use efficiencies for each genotype. Drought tolerance index (DTI) was computed as the fraction of irrigated yield maintained under drought, normalised by the mean yield across all genotypes in the trial. Seven genotypes were tested in all years, and the data on these were used to calculate yield stability statistics and to estimate broad-sense heritability. There were more than two-fold differences in droughted and irrigated yields between genotypes, and nearly a two-fold difference in DTI. According to an index that combines yield potential and drought tolerance, some genotypes performed better than the three locally adapted commercial varieties included in the test. There were significant effects for genotype, treatment and G×E interactions for yield components and radiation use efficiency. There were also significant genotype differences in harvest index but few significant G×E interactions. Droughted and irrigated yields were positively associated, but there was no close relation between yield potential and DTI. The seven genotypes common to all years differed in yield stability and in sensitivity to water availability. Thus, the genetic resources exist for germplasm improvement. Both yield potential and DTI (which may ensure better yield stability) should be considered simultaneously as breeding targets for drought-prone areas.  相似文献

Thirteen female dogs, which included eight principals that were fed approximately 4.4 X 10(10) colony forming units (cfu) of Brucella abortus strain 2308 and five sentinels that were housed with the principals, were examined for serologic responses, blood culture, tissue distribution of the organisms and pathologic lesions. Serum samples from each dog were tested on the day of exposure and on post exposure days 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 49 for antibodies to B. abortus, using the brucellosis card (BC), standard tube agglutination (STA), 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) and rivanol (RIV) tests. Antibodies were detected in the principals by day 5 and increased through day 21. The STA test was the first to become positive, followed by the BC, ME and RIV tests. After 28 days, the serologic titers receded. From day 14 through day 42, all principals had greater than or equal to 1:50 STA titers. On day 49, seven principals had greater than or equal to 1:50 STA titers and one had a 1:25 STA titer. The sentinels were negative for all tests, except sentinel number 9 which had STA titers ranging from 1:25 to 1:50 on day 14 through day 35. Blood cultures that were obtained from each principal at intervals from one hour after exposure through 49 days were negative. Brucella abortus was isolated from various lymph nodes of the eight principals and from sentinel number 9, which was apparently infected by ingesting brucellae contaminated feces from the principals. Microscopic lesions were not observed in the culture-positive tissues examined.  相似文献
