In India, many of the fish farmers stock 1-year-old stunted fishes (stunted yearlings) of Indian major carps (IMC) for enhancing fish production through compensatory growth, but many of them observed problems of early maturation in these fishes. Application of aromatase inhibitors for deceleration of ovarian maturation is one of the probable solutions to mitigate this issue. In the present study, a synthetic aromatase inhibitor letrozole [25 (L25) and 50 (L50) mg kg?1 feed] and a plant-derived aromatase inhibitor, grape seed extract [100 (G100) and 200 (G200) mg kg?1 feed], were fed to stunted yearlings of rohu (Labeo rohita) for 45 days well before the onset of breeding season. Maturation indices such as gonadosomatic index (GSI) and serum oestradiol (E) levels indicated a dose-dependent inhibition of ovarian development in the aromatase-inhibitor-treated fish. Higher dose of letrozole (GSI, 15.12 ± 0.18; E, 3.19 ± 0.42) and grape seed extract (GSI, 16.90 ± 0.40; E, 3.60 ± 0.75) were found to be more effective since control fish showed further advancement in maturation (GSI, 21.20 ± 1.10; E, 7.33 ± 0.74) during the peak breeding season (15th June). Histological observations also confirmed the results revealing a delayed initiation of ovarian development in the case of higher doses of letrozole and grape seed extracts. These results indicate the possible use of aromatase inhibitors in arresting the early maturation process in IMC.  相似文献

Studies on frequency and depth of irrigation for groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) for two summer seasons at Tirupati campus of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, India showed that, keeping the total quantity of applied irrigation water almost the same, high frequency irrigation gave the highest yield. For each irrigation frequency, highest yields were obtained when the depth of water applied was equal to that lost in evapotranspiration. Low irrigation frequency and low depth of irrigation resulted in lower yields. Increase in yield with increase in frequency and depth of water was due to optimum available moisture and nutrients in the root zone throughout the crop period. The results from the trial indicated that on sandy loam soils of poor water retentive capacity, high yields can be obtained with frequent irrigations with the depth of water applied equal to that lost in evapotranspiration.  相似文献

Chitosan treatment (2-8 mg/mL) of wheat seeds significantly improved seed germination to recommended seed certification standards (>85%) and vigor at concentrations >4 mg/mL, in two cultivars of spring wheat (Norseman and Max), by controlling seed-borne Fusarium graminearum infection. The germination was <80% in the control and >85% in benomyl- and chitosan-treated seeds. Seed-borne F. graminearum was reduced to >50% at higher chitosan treatments compared to the control. Synthesis of phenolic acids was stimulated in primary leaves following chitosan treatment, and levels of these phenolic acids, especially ferulic acid, increased significantly with increasing chitosan concentration. Lignin content of primary leaves also showed a similar pattern. The synthesis of precursors of lignin such as p-coumaric, ferulic, and sinapic acids and phenolic acids having antimicrobial activity such as benzoic, p-coumaric, caffeic, protocatechuic, chlorogenic, ferulic, and gallic acids was also stimulated by chitosan treatment. The induction of phenolic acids and lignin was significantly lower in cv. Max compared to Norseman. Chitosan also inhibited fungal transmission to the primary roots of germinating seedlings. Results suggest that chitosan controlled seed-borne F. graminearum infection and increased the resistance in seedlings by stimulating the accumulation of phenolics and lignin. Thus, chitosan has a potential for improvement of seed quality and enhancement of crop yields as well as increased value of stored grains for food and feed.  相似文献

Culling prior to final harvest has shown many advantages in improving the marketable yield in freshwater prawn farming. This study is an attempt to compare three harvesting techniques on the production and population structure of Macrobrachium rosenbergii farming in a wetland ecosystem of South India. The study also compares the marketable yield structure and economics of farming of these prawns in three quadruplicate sets of polders following either complete harvest (T1) or traditional partial harvest through dewatering and cast netting (T2) or a modified cull harvest (T3) with a newly designed drag seine. Results showed better yield and faster morphotype transformation among treatments that followed cull harvesting. Among them, better results on mean weight and survival rate (64 g and 54% respectively) were recorded from T3. The results also showed that irrespective of the type of cull harvesting, their inclusion in polders facilitated faster morphotypic transformation and thenceforth the preponderance of terminal morphotypes in the harvested population. Likewise, larger sized male morphotypes were significantly higher (35% and 25% respectively) in T2 and T3. The net production also varied significantly within the treatments from 140 kg ha?1 in T1 to 515 kg ha?1 in T3. From a marketability point of view also, the total marketable prawns (>50 g group) varied considerably from 94% (T2) and 92% (T3) to 78% in T1. While working out the harvest economics through benefit–cost analysis, it was inferred that the introduction of the new harvest technique was more profitable compared to the traditional systems prevailing in Kuttanad. This study also emphasizes the need for resorting to modified partial harvesting through the use of drag seines, as it considerably reduces the cost on harvesting in a waterlogged ecosystem such as Kuttanad.  相似文献
