The larval development ol the southern African endemic clupeid Gilchristella aestuaria is described and illustrated from specimens collected in the Swartvlei and Sundays estuarine systems of the Cape Province. Free embryos have no visible gut, unpigmented eyes and bodies, and are dependent on the yolk sac contents for nutrition. This stage lasts until about 4 mm body length (BL) when the eyes become pigmented and a gut becomes visible. Between 4 mm and 7 mm BL melanophores on the ventral aspect of the body form, and the dorsal and caudal lin anlagen develop. Between 7 mm and 8 mm BL the swimbladder lorms, flexion occurs and the anal fin anlage develops. By the 10 mm BL stage most of the skeletal elements have begun to differentiate, with the vertebral centra already showing signs of ossification. General ossification commences between 12 mm and 13 mm BL. All unpaired fins have the adult complement of rays by 15 mm BL. Scalation starts between 16 mm and 17 mm BL and is complete by 20 mm BL. Body depth increases gradually, from about 5% of BL in the early larval stages to >14% of BL in the juveniles. The pre-anal length decreases from about 87% of BL in the larvae to approximately 69% of BL in the juveniles. Head length increases from approximately 11% of BL in the larvae to 24-29% of BL in the juveniles. The larval snoui is initially 2% of BL, increasing to 7% of BL in the juvenile stages owing to the development of jaw elements.  相似文献

Tick-infested adult cattle were hand sprayed with solutions containing 178 or 250 mg amitraz litre?1, prepared from a miscible oil concentrate formulation. Both concentrations achieved clearance of infestation within 7 h of spraying. All stages of tick, collected from both sprayings, subsequently died with the exception of two engorged nymphs, which moulted successfully, and six half-fully engorged females, which all laid small batches of eggs. The eggs from the ticks treated at the higher rate failed to hatch. Expulsion of adult Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, applied daily to a single bovine which had been sprayed once at the higher rate, ceased on the 11th day after spraying. All ticks expelled from the animal died within 24 h. First feeding on the animal was visible on day-13 and fully engorged females were first observed 18 days after spraying.  相似文献

Data from twenty experiments, conducted at ADAS Research Centres in England and Wales during 1986–92, were used to determine effluent production from additive-treated grass silages made in large-scale bunker silos. The additives compared were formic acid at 4·0 l t–1, rolled barley at 44·0 kg t–1, dried molassed sugar beet feed at 40·0 kg t–1 and liquid inoculants at 2·2 l t–1 together with a non-additive-treated control. The silages were made from herbage with an average dry-matter (DM) content of 177 (s.e. 3·8) g kg–1 and water-soluble carbohydrate content of 140 g kg–1 DM. Average silage toluene DM content was 213 (s.e. 3·8) g kg–1. The formic acid and sugar beet feed silages were both well fermented, whereas the other silages were less well fermented. Effluent produced was determined as either effluent production (l t–1 grass ensiled) during the 52-d period in which it was measured or peak flow (l h–1) during the first 2 d of ensilage. Compared with non-additive-treated silage, dried molassed sugar beet feed significantly reduced both effluent production (27%) and peak flow (36%). Formic acid significantly increased peak flow (51%), but had little effect upon effluent production, and significantly reduced effluent N and lactic acid content. Barley and inoculant treatment had no significant effect upon effluent production. In general, poor relationships were found between DM content and effluent production. Nevertheless for silages, except those treated with absorbents or formic acid, a significant (P < 0·001) negative relationship between silage effluent production (l t–1 grass ensiled) and the DM (g kg–1) content of the ensiled grass was found.  相似文献

Summary

Overhead irrigation is a common irrigation practice in nurseries, yet it can be wasteful of water and nutrients. We compared the water use, fertilizer use and growth of ‘Top Gun’ lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and ‘Grosse Lisse’ tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seedlings in sub and overhead irrigation systems. Five rates of controlled release fertilizer were used – 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 kg m–3. Sub-irrigation used 86% less water than overhead irrigation. Irrigation type had a significant effect on some growth measurements by final harvest, 43 d after sowing. The sub-irrigated lettuce seedlings were significantly taller. The overhead irrigated lettuce seedlings had a higher dry weight and more leaves. The sub-irrigated tomato seedlings were taller, had longer leaves, a larger leaf area and more leaves. Increasing levels of controlled release fertilizer produced quadratic type responses over time for shoot dry weight, with 10 kg m–3 producing tomato and lettuce transplants with a higher biomass in a shorter time than lower levels of fertilizer.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Rose‐ringed parakeets Psittacula krameri (Scop.) have recently become established in several European countries, with potential for significant negative economic and ecological impacts. However, in northern Europe the potential for reproductive output is largely unknown. In 2005 the authors established a captive outdoor colony in north‐east England and examined breeding success over 2 years. RESULTS: In 2006 (19 pairs, 15 clutches) the average first clutch size was 3.6 (±0.3) eggs. Six clutches were infertile, and overall the colony produced 1.4 (±0.5) fertile eggs per pair. Eleven pairs produced a second clutch following removal of the first; seven were infertile, and overall productivity was 0.7 (±0.4) fertile eggs per pair. Unsuccessful pairs were rearranged or replaced. In 2007, overall productivity was 2.5 (±0.4) and 1.8 (±0.4) fertile eggs per pair for the first and second attempts respectively. For pairs that remained unchanged through 2006–2007, productivity was consistent between years and breeding attempts. CONCLUSION: Where food and nest sites were not limiting, clutch sizes in north‐east England were similar to those in the native range, and consistent between first and second attempts. This has implications for the future expansion and management of the species. © Crown Copyright 2009. Reproduced with permission of Her Majesty's Stationery Office.
