The ability to read patient identification microchips relies on the use of radiofrequency pulses. Since radiofrequency pulses also form an integral part of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) process, the possibility of loss of microchip function during MRI scanning is of concern. Previous clinical trials have shown microchip function to be unaffected by MR imaging using a field strength of 1 Tesla and 1.5. As veterinary MRI scanners range widely in field strength, this study was devised to determine whether exposure to lower or higher field strengths than 1 Tesla would affect the function of different types of microchip. In a phantom study, a total of 300 International Standards Organisation (ISO)‐approved microchips (100 each of three different types: ISO FDX‐B 1.4 × 9 mm, ISO FDX‐B 2.12 × 12 mm, ISO HDX 3.8 × 23 mm) were tested in a low field (0.5) and a high field scanner (3.0 Tesla). A total of 50 microchips of each type were tested in each scanner. The phantom was composed of a fluid‐filled freezer pack onto which a plastic pillow and a cardboard strip with affixed microchips were positioned. Following an MRI scan protocol simulating a head study, all of the microchips were accurately readable. Neither 0.5 nor 3 Tesla imaging affected microchip function in this study.  相似文献

Radiologists are regularly faced with the task of comparing image quality obtained using different imaging systems or settings. Visual grading techniques can be used to evaluate the quality of images by grading the clarity of reproduction of anatomical or pathological structures. The methods, which include “visual grading analysis (VGA)” and the “image criteria (IC) study”, are characterised by their attractive simplicity and reliability. Non-parametric rank-invariant statistical methods are suitable techniques for statistical analysis of VGA-data. Båth and Månsson (2007) introduced such a method and termed it “visual grading characteristics (VGC) analysis”. This paper gives an overview of the principle together with an example of its use in veterinary radiology. The aim of this review article is to encourage veterinary researchers to apply this method which has proven valuable in the human field. Basically, the method can also be applied for the analysis of other categories of images (e.g. histological sections, cytological smears) in cases where the task is to evaluate features subjectively on the basis of a score, allowing some degree of freedom of decision. Furthermore, the aim of the investigation is not necessarily restricted to quality aspects. Other questions such as the effects of treatment options on the appearance of certain structures can be compared as well.  相似文献

Sinusitis is a common disorder in horses and may result from trauma, dental diseases, or space-occupying lesions. Radiography can only provide a limited amount of information. Computed tomography (CT) has been documented as an alternative imaging method. Eighteen horses (mostly Warmblood) with signs of chronic sinusitis were examined preoperatively with CT to assist in diagnosis of the underlying cause. There was a group of common CT features in horses with dental disease and sinusitis. The first molar was the most frequently affected maxillary cheek tooth. Hypoattenuation of the cementum, destruction of the enamel, and filling of the infundibular cavity with gas were the most frequent CT findings associated with caries. Gas bubbles within the bulging root area or fragmentation of the root in combination with swelling of the adjacent sinus lining were the most important CT features of dental decay. CT findings associated with sinusitis included excessive thickening of the respiratory epithelium in the rostral maxillary sinus; the caudal maxillary sinus was less often involved. The infraorbital canal, the nasomaxillary duct, and the frontomaxillary aperture were usually involved. The maxillary bone, however, especially the facial crest, was involved in nearly every horse, being characterized by endosteal sclerosis, thickening, periosteal reaction, and deformation leading to facial swelling in chronic infections. CT images allowed identification of involvement of individual teeth more clearly to reveal the diseased one for treatment. Three-dimensional imaging allowed improved understanding of the extent and severity of the pathologic change.  相似文献

Objective Pain sensitivity of lambs changes over the first weeks of life. However, the effects of early treatments such as human handling on pain sensitivity are unknown for this species. This study investigated the effects of regular early gentle human handling on the pain sensitivity of lambs, indicated by their behavioural responses to tail docking. Study design Prospective part‐blinded experimental study. Animals Twenty‐nine singleton Coopworth lambs (females n = 14, males n = 15). Methods Starting at one day of age, lambs were either handled twice daily for 2 weeks (Handled), were kept in the presence of lambs who were being handled but were not handled themselves (Presence), or were exposed to a human only during routine feeding and care (Control). At 3 weeks of age, all lambs were tail docked using rubber rings. Changes in behaviour due to docking were calculated and change data were analyzed using two‐way anova with treatment and test pen as main factors. Results All lambs showed significant increases in the frequency and duration of behaviours indicative of pain, including ‘abnormal’ behaviours, and decreases in the frequency and duration of ‘normal’ behaviours after docking. Handled lambs showed a smaller increase in the time spent lying abnormally after docking than did Control lambs (mean transformed change in proportion of 30 minutes spent ± SE: Control 0.55 ± 0.04; Handled 0.38 ± 0.03; Presence 0.48 ± 0.03; C versus H t = 3.45, p = 0.007). Conclusions and clinical relevance These results provide some evidence that handling early in life may reduce subsequent pain sensitivity in lambs. While the behavioural effects of handling on pain behaviour were subtle, the results suggest, at the very least, that early handling does not increase pain sensitivity in lambs and suggests there is still flexibility postnatally in the pain processing system of a precocial species.  相似文献

Metal halide lights are currently used as standard in commercial Atlantic salmon sea cages as a means of enhancing productivity through grilse inhibition. However, such systems create bright point light sources that are neither environment specific nor species specific and could potentially compromise fish welfare. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are a new form of lighting technology currently being developed for the fish farming industry that can be tuned to environment and species sensitivities through narrow bandwidth outputs. However, prior to implementing these new high energy alternatives, any potential adverse effects must be determined in fish. The objectives of this study were thus (1) to determine the effect of increasing intensities of blue LED light (0.199–2.7 W m 2, at 0.1 m from the light source) on light perception and stress response, and (2) to examine potential retinal damage under these conditions in post-smolt Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. A white LED light was also tested, as well as a very high intensity metal halide positive control. Results demonstrated firstly that salmon perceived blue LED light (basal melatonin levels maintained) irrespective of intensity. Secondly, fish exposed to high intensity blue LED light showed an increase in plasma cortisol and glucose levels within 3 h, returning to a basal state 24 h post-light onset. This typical acute stress response was not observed in fish exposed to the white LED light and lower blue light intensities which could indicate differential sensitivities to spectral content of the light. No effects on the non-specific immune system (lysozyme activity) were observed. Finally, extensive histological examination of the retina from fish exposed to these various light treatments revealed no signs of damage. This demonstrates the efficiency of the adaptive mechanisms to light developed in fish.  相似文献

The mucosal immune response serves as the first line of defence against many bacterial and viral diseases. Therefore, measurement of mucosal immune responses is important in evaluating mucosal immunisation protocols and understanding initial host/pathogen interactions. In this study we compare two methods for repeated sampling of bovine rectal mucosal secretions, namely rectal swabbing and rectal biopsies, and evaluate a simple swabbing method for sampling bovine nasal secretions. Both rectal swabs and rectal biopsies yielded similar quantities of total IgA (TIgA)/ml. However, rectal biopsies yielded five times more total IgG (TIgG)/ml than rectal swabs. Blood contamination was estimated to contribute approximately 7% of TIgG and <0.05% TIgA in rectal swab samples compared to 40% of TIgG and 4.5% of TIgA in rectal biopsy samples, indicating that rectal swabbing was more effective at sampling rectal mucosal secretions. Nasal swabs were effective at obtaining nasal secretion samples with only 1% of TIgG and <0.05% TIgA estimated to be blood derived. Furthermore, H7 flagellin-specific antibodies were detected in both nasal and rectal swab samples following either rectal immunisation with purified H7 flagellin or oral challenge with live E. coli O157:H7, indicating that both techniques are effective methods for monitoring mucosal antibody responses in cattle.  相似文献

Summary Two monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) which react specifically with potato virus T (PVT) were produced and tested for cross reactivity with potato viruses (A, S, X, Yo, YN, leaf roll), apple stem grooving virus (ASGV) and against healthy sap. They were found to be highly specific for PVT. These two McAbs form the basis of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of PVT in infected plant material which is of key significance for potato quarantine.  相似文献

Radiographic features of the region of the trochanteric fossa were evaluated bilaterally on 175 ventrodorsal radiographs of canine hip joints and findings were compared to anatomic specimens. The fossa showed a variable radiographic appearance, which was affected by positioning and anatomic diversity. On a small number of radiographs (n = 12), the trochanteric fossa was clearly defined as a circular area of radiopacity surrounded by a radiolucent halo. This appearance was significantly influenced by medial rotation of the femur (P < 0.001). On some anatomic specimens an irregular protuberance representing the site of attachment of the gemelli, internal and external obturator muscles was seen within the fossa, surrounded by a variable number of small openings, which were thought to be nutrient foramina. Dissection identified a small number of minor branches of the medial circumflex femoral artery entering these.  相似文献
