Toxoplasma infection as detected by the immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test was found in 13.2% of 448 dogs examined at the Purdue University Small Animal Clinic. Only titres of 1/64 and above were considered positive, but lesser titers were encountered more frequently. The highest titer observed was 1/1024 in 2 dogs one of which had idiopathic epilepsy and the other had dirofilariasis as well as hip dysplasia. The incidence of positive sera from male and female dogs were 11.7 and 14.5%, respectively. The highest frequency of infection occurred in young dogs up to 4 years of age and the lowest was in older animals. The presence of the high toxoplasmosis IFA titers in the sera of dogs seems to be associated with other disease conditions. Stress such as joint dislocations, fractures, helminth parasitism, and concomitant bacterial and viral infections, etc., was observed in 62.7% of the positive cases. Presence of tumors and renal disease conditions were associated with 28.8 and 5.2%, respectively, of the positive sera.  相似文献

Tumor Necrosis Factor-Like Cytotoxicity (TNF-LC) was examined in sera from 12 pigs experimentally infected with Ascaris suum. The difference of TNF-LC levels between eight infected and four uninfected controls was not significant. When an endotoxin challenge was intravenously administered 1 month after the first dose of A. suum, the levels of TNF-LC in the sera of infected pigs were one-third that of the controls 125 min post-challenge (PC). In a more detailed study on four infected and two uninfected control pigs, TNF-LC was monitored every 10-15 min until 125 min after endotoxin challenge. The TNF-LC levels in these pigs increased at 40 min PC, reached maximum in another 10-25 min and then decreased. This pattern was seen in all except one infected pig. The infected pigs showed milder shock symptoms and their serum TNF-LC levels returned to pre-challenge levels 30 min earlier than controls.  相似文献

Ten consecutive daily doses of infective Ascaris suum eggs were administered to pigs in two experiments and the levels of gastrointestinal hormones in their blood were measured. The piglets in each experiment were divided into low-dose (LDI) and high-dose (HDI) infections and control groups. Infected pigs had lower feed consumption, lower weight gains, and lower feed efficiency than control pigs. Serum gastrin levels in infected pigs were significantly lower than the controls from Days 7 to 17 post first inoculation (PFI), and so were their serum glucagon levels from Days 12 to 24 PFI. Serum insulin levels in infected animals were sometimes lower than those in controls. These differences were usually more intense in the LDI pigs than in HDI pigs. The plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) levels in the LDI group were significantly higher than those in controls from Day 10 PFI to the end of the experiment, while the CCK levels in the HDI group did not differ significantly from the controls. Increased plasma CCK levels could be a satiety factor in A. suum infection since the time of occurrence of high levels of CCK matched the period of reduced feed consumption.  相似文献

Twenty-five experimental and five control hysterectomy derived pigs were raised colostrum free under specific pathogen-free conditions. The experimental pigs were first inoculated with A. suum eggs at 8 weeks of age, and a second dose of infective eggs was given 15 days later. They were necropsied from 4 to 10 days post second infection.The ulcers found in the stomach of these pigs were confined to the esophagogastric area. A sequence of epithelial changes, erosions, and ulceration was seen in the stratified squamous epithelium. Edema and hemorrhage were noted in the lamina propria and submucosa. Vascular changes in the area were characterized by thickening of the wall and presence of thrombi in arteries as well as cellular degeneration and vacuolization of the media and intima of the veins.Changes in the muscularis were characterized by edema and degeneration of the muscle cells, which later were replaced by fibroblasts and heavy infiltration by eosinophils.Three of the control pigs received one dose of A. suum eggs, and were killed one on each of the 8th, 9th, and 10th days post infection. The remaining two pigs received no infective material and were killed when they were 11 weeks of age. Neither the uninoculated pigs nor the once-inoculated animals developed ulcerations in their stomachs.The possible mechanisms by which esophagogastric lesions are produced following A. suum larval migrations are discussed.  相似文献

The fate of carbon from long-chain fatty acids and glucose in dairy cows which were fed with protected fat was studied using stable isotope technique. The experiment was carried out on two groups of dairy cows (n=16 in each group) during the first 15 weeks of the lactation period. The cows were fed isoenergetic and isoproteinogenous diets based on corn silage. About 1.8 kg of tapioca starch in the diet of the starch group was substituted by about 0.7 kg of rumen protected fat (Ca salts of palm oil and soybean oil) in the diet of the fat group. The carbon atoms of dietary fat were naturally depleted in 13C as compared to carbon atoms of starch. Daily milk performance and lactose output were significantly (P < 0.05) higher among the cows fed with fat diet. In comparison to the starch group, the enrichment of milk fat with 13C was significantly lower, while that of breath CO2 was significantly higher in the fat group (P < 0.05). This means the fatty acids were incorporated into milk fat in preference to metabolic oxidation. Further studies showed that blood glucose is oxidized to a lower extent and is used for the synthesis of lactose to a higher proportion if the cows were fed with the fat diet. The glucose entry rate into the body glucose pool was not different between the diets. In conclusion, the dietary fatty acids perform a glucose sparing effect and improve the glucose supply for the mammary gland.  相似文献

Nine cowpea cultivars obtained from Wad Medani Research Station were used in this study. The variation in protein fraction was: albumins 4.0–12.0, globulins 65.6–79.7, prolamins 1.4–2.2, G1-glutelins 0.9–3.0, G2-glutelins 1.4–2.9. G3-glutenins 9.1–14.0 and insoluble protein 0.5–3.0%. Two cowpea cultivars, H8-14 and CB-46, selected for their high albumin content, were cooked in 150 ml of boiling distilled water under reflux for 45 minutes. The protein fractions in the cooked seeds were determined. Results indicated that albumin and globulin fractions decreased significantly (p0.05) for both cultivars after cooking. This decrease was accompanied by a significant increase in G3-glutelin fractions.  相似文献
