Chlamydiosis in workers at a duck farm and processing plant   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
SUMMARY An outbreak of chlamydiosis was Investigated in workers at a duck farm and processing plant during winter 1989. Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from ducks, but there was little evidence of clinical chlamydiosis in the ducks. Serological tests showed that 76% of workers had been exposed to Infection, 12% recently, 16% had not been exposed and 8% had inconclusive test results. There was a strong association (P < 0.05) between years of employment and exposure to Infection. Infection appeared to be contracted during the first year of employment. Measures were Implemented to reduce shed contamination and control rodents and wild birds. At the same time, ducks were medicated, the processing plant was modified, work practices were altered and workers were advised about chlamydiosis to reduce the risk of human infection.  相似文献

Hemoglobin plays an important role in the color and oxidative stability of seafoods. A recent practice in the seafood industry is to stabilize muscle color by the application of gases containing carbon monoxide. The goal of this study was to examine and compare the properties of tilapia hemoglobin complexed to either O(2) (Oxy-Hb) or CO (CO-Hb) at pH 6.5, which reflects the tilapia muscle postmortem pH. CO-Hb was significantly (p < 0.01) more stable against autoxidation compared to Oxy-Hb when kept at 4 and -30 degrees C for 23 days. Almost no loss of CO was detected for both temperatures according to the UV-vis spectra of Hb. This stabilization was also believed to play a role in increased protein structure stabilization (p < 0.001) since less protein aggregation was seen for CO-Hb. The higher protein stabilization for Hb was linked to the heme group, which was maintained in its reduced state longer for CO-Hb vs Oxy-Hb and was likely less exposed to solvent. CO-Hb had significantly (p < 0.01) less peroxidase activity than Oxy-Hb and thus reactivity with H(2)O(2). The pro-oxidative activity of CO-Hb was significantly (p < 0.01) reduced in a linoleic acid micelle system compared to that of Oxy-Hb, while smaller differences in activity were seen in a washed cod and tilapia muscle model system.  相似文献

During July 1986, atmospheric concentrations and deposition rates of Ph, Cd, Zn, and Mn were measured at a spruce forest in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and meteorological data were recorded. Precipitation, cloud water impaction, and dry deposition were quantified. Average total fluxes of 12, 1.0, 53, and 40 µg m?2 d?1 for Pb, Cd, Zn, and Mn, respectively, were measured; dry deposition constituted 46, 32, 62 and 66% of each of the totals. Cloud impaction (unusually low for this particular month) was measurable but not quantitatively important. Dry deposited Pb and Zn were washed from the canopy by subsequent rainfall — revealing greater throughfall fluxes associated with increasing antecedent dry period durations. Cadmium and Mn did not, however, show this relationship. Measurements revealed little interaction of Cd with the forest canopy, while considerable net leaching of Mn was evident (as had been expected). The canopy behaviors of both Pb (i.e., leaching) and Zn (i.e., uptake) were contrary to expectations.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo investigate the contribution of K+ channels on peripheral antinociception induced by ketamine.Study designProspective experimental study.Animals110 male Wistar rats weighing 160–200 g.MethodsThe paw pressure required to elicit limb flexion was designated as the nociceptive threshold. Hyperalgesia was induced by intraplantar injection of prostaglandin E2. All drugs were administered locally into the right hind paw of rats. Ketamine was administered into the right hind paw 2 hours and 55 minutes after local injection of PGE2. Tetraethylammonium was administered 30 minutes prior to ketamine and the other K+ channel blockers, glibenclamide, dequalinium and paxilline, were administered 5 minutes prior to ketamine.ResultsProstaglandin E2 (2 μg per paw) induced hyperalgesia. Ketamine (10, 20, 40 and 80 μg per paw) elicited a local peripheral antinociceptive effect that was antagonized by a specific blocker of ATP‐sensitive K+ channels, glibenclamide (20, 40 and 80 μg per paw). In another experiment, the non‐selective voltage‐dependent K+ channel blocker tetraethylammonium (30 μg per paw) and small and large conductance blockers of Ca2+‐activated K+ channels, dequalinium (50 μg per paw) and paxilline (20 μg per paw), were ineffective at blocking the effect of a local ketamine injection.Conclusions and clinical relevanceAnalysis of these results provides evidence that ketamine, may in part, induce peripheral antinociceptive effects by ATP‐sensitive K+ channel pathway activation.  相似文献

Picosecond optical excitation was used to coherently control the excitation in a single quantum dot on a time scale that is short compared with the time scale for loss of quantum coherence. The excitonic wave function was manipulated by controlling the optical phase of the two-pulse sequence through timing and polarization. Wave function engineering techniques, developed in atomic and molecular systems, were used to monitor and control a nonstationary quantum mechanical state composed of a superposition of eigenstates. The results extend the concept of coherent control in semiconductors to the limit of a single quantum system in a zero-dimensional quantum dot.  相似文献

A study of the aquatic fate of the triethylamine salt of triclopyr (3,5,6‐trichloro‐2‐pyridinyloxyacetic acid) was conducted in three bays of Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota. Triclopyr is under review by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a selective aquatic herbicide. The primary purpose of this study was to determine dissipation rates of the parent active ingredient, triclopyr, and its major metabolites, 3,5,6‐trichloropyridinol (TCP) and 3,5,6‐trichloro‐2‐methoxypyridine (TMP) in selected matrices including water, sediment, plants, finfish and shellfish. Two 6.5‐ha plots dominated by the weedy species Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum L) were treated with triclopyr‐triethylammonum at a rate of 2.5 mg AE liter−1 (2.5 ppm) on 21–23 June 1994. A third 6.5‐ha plot was established as an untreated reference. Water and sediment samples were collected from within the plots and at selected locations up to 1600 m outside of the plots through six weeks post‐treatment for chemical residue analysis. In addition, residue samples were collected from the target and non‐target plants and other non‐target matrices, including game and rough fish, clams and crayfish. All test animals were sequestered in cages located in the center of each plot and samples were collected through four weeks post‐treatment. Half‐lives for dissipation of triclopyr and TCP in water ranged from 3.7 to 4.7 days and from 4.2 to 7.9 days, respectively, with trace amounts of TMP found. Peak triclopyr sediment values ranged from 257 to 335 ng gram−1, with a mean half‐life of 5.4 days, while peak TCP sediment levels ranged from 27 to 65 ng gram−1 (mean half−life = 11.0 days). Trace levels of TMP were detected at one treatment site at one sampling event. Triclopyr and TCP accumulated and cleared from animal tissues proportionately to concentrations in the water (triclopyr dissipation half‐lives <11 days, TCP < 14 days). TMP levels were two to three times higher than those of the other compounds, particularly in visceral tissue. In all cases, residues of these compounds were higher in the inedible portions of the animals, and were usually higher in bottom‐feeding fish species. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献
