Objective— To describe a technique for, and outcome after, mandibular osteodistraction in the horse.
Study Design— Clinical report.
Animals— Warmblood horse.
Methods— A half ring external fixator was applied on both sides of an osteotomy site performed on the mandible of a colt. A bite plate was placed on the upper incisors creating occlusion between lower and upper jaw. After a 5-day latency period, distraction was applied (1 mm/day) until the overjet was judged normal.
Results— Mandibular elongation and correction of brachygnathia was obtained without major complications. Six months after the procedure the overjet reduction was considered stable.
Conclusions— Mandibular osteodistraction can be considered for treatment of severe brachygnathia in yearlings.
Clinical Relevance— Distraction osteogenesis has the advantage of progressive elongation of the mandible, allowing concurrent bone remodeling and soft tissue adaptation. Severe mandibular incisor malocclusion in horses outside the maximal growth phase can be corrected using this technique.  相似文献

Abstract. A natural bath challenge method has been developed for furunculosis using Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson. Fish were placed in an enclosed, continuously circulating tank system, supplemented with additional oxygen, the temperature raised gradually (overnight) to 15–16°C, a low dose of Aeromonas salmonicida (strain 184/186) introduced into the tank and the challenge maintained for 14 days. The challenge strain was characterized with respect to possible virulence factors and possessed an A-layer, ability to auto-agglutinate, haemagglutinate, adhere to Atlantic salmon cells and resist destruction by serum. No caseinase activity was detected. LD50 for salmon using this method was 1.8×103 cells per millilitre while trout had an LD50 of 9.5×104 cells per millilitre. Onset of the disease appeared to depend on fish size with larger trout (50 g) taking up to 10 days to show signs of the disease while mortalities in smaller trout (8.5g) commenced on day 1 post-challenge.  相似文献

Foot pain is an important cause of lameness in horses. When horses with foot pain have no detectable radiographic abnormalities, soft‐tissue assessment remains a diagnostic challenge without magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Ultrasonography can provide an alternative to MR imaging when that modality is not available but the extent of changes that might be seen has not been characterized. We reviewed the ultrasonographic findings in 39 horses with lameness responding positively to anesthesia of the palmar digital nerves and without radiographically detectable osseous abnormalities. Thirty of the 39 horses had lesions affecting the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT), 27 had abnormalities in the distal interphalangeal joint of which six had a visible abnormality in the collateral ligament. Ultrasonographic abnormalities were seen in the podotrochlear bursa in 22 horses and in the ligaments of the navicular bone in two horses. Abnormalities of the navicular bone flexor surface were detected in eight horses. In three of the 39 horses, only the DDFT was affected. The other 36 horses had ultrasonographic abnormalities in more than one anatomical structure. Based on our results, ultrasonographic examination provides useful diagnostic information in horses without radiographic changes.  相似文献

Several published models exist for simulating vertical profiles of pelagic fish eggs, but no one has rigorously assessed their capacity to explain observed variability. In this study, we applied a steady‐state model, with four different formulations for vertical diffusivity, to northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) and Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) eggs in the California Current region. Vertical mixing profiles, based on wind speed and hydrography, were combined with estimated terminal ascent velocities of the eggs based on measurements of egg buoyancy and size, to simulate the vertical profiles of the eggs. We evaluated model performance with two data sets: (1) vertically stratified tows for both species and (2) paired samples for sardine eggs from 3‐m depth and in vertically integrated tows. We used two criteria: whether the model predicted individual observed vertical profiles (1) as well as the observed mean and (2) better than the observed mean. Model predictions made with the formulation producing the most gradual profile of vertical diffusivity provided the best match to observations from both data sets and for both species. Addition of a random error term to the terminal ascent velocity further improved prediction for anchovy eggs, but not sardine. For the paired data, model prediction of integrated abundance from abundance at 3‐m depth had significantly lower mean square error than prediction based on a linear regression of 3 m on integrated abundance. Our results support the feasibility of using data from the Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler quantitatively as well as qualitatively in stock assessments.  相似文献
