Four related Chow Chow puppies which were presented because of stiffness in their movements were shown to have myotonia similar to myotonia congenita of man. Electromyography revealed characteristic myotonic discharges. Repetitive nerve stimulation studies showed a marked fade in the compound muscle action potential (CMAP) which was most apparent at stimulation rates of 10 per sec or higher. If stimulation was continued at a rate of 10 per sec the CMAP returned to normal or sometimes greater than normal following several seconds of the reduced response. The decremental response could be exaggerated by cooling the muscle prior to repetitive nerve stimulation. A therapeutic trial to assess the efficacy of the commonly used membrane stabilizing agents, quinidine, procainamide and phenytoin, indicated that all three drugs were beneficial in the treatment of myotonia but procainamide produced the best response. Hypocholesterolaemia was documented in one case. The possibility of a multisystem membrane defect in hereditary myotonia associated with low serum cholesterol was considered. 相似文献

SUMMARY The passive blomechanical property of oesophageal compliance (OC) was measured in 8 naturally occurring cases of canine megaoesophagus, 8 matched control and 7 vagotomised control dogs. Of the 8 dogs with megaoesophagus, 6 had congenital Idiopathic megaoesophagus and 2 had secondary megaoesophagus attributable to generalised skeletal muscle disease. Stepwise distension of the whole oesophagus was employed for measurement of OC at the 4.0 and 8.0 mL/kg Injected volume steps within the control volume range (0 to 12.0 mL/kg). At both Injected volume steps OC was higher In megaoesophagus dogs than in either matched control or vagotomised control dogs (P / 0.01 In both cases), and no significant difference was observed In OC between matched control and vagotomised control dogs. No correlation was demonstrated between OC and the estimated duration of clinical signs of dogs with megaoesophagus. These findings suggest that In most cases of canine megaoesophagus the viscoelastic properties of the oesophageal wall are significantly altered, that In such cases the disorder is unlikely to be purely dynamic and that processes other than the duration of oesophageal dilatation are responsible for the alteration in oesophageal wall blomechanical properties. The relevance of these findings to current concepts on pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the evolution and resolution of various forms of canine megaoesophagus Is discussed. 相似文献

The potential influence of climate warming on the future status of agricultural pests in Australia is discussed in terms of the possible effects that changes in temperature, rainfall and weather patterns will have on the future distribution, numbers, fluctuations and movements of pest populations. Event-driven outbreaks are distinguished from rate-driven processes in pest populations. The future severity and frequency of pest outbreaks will depend on changes in the frequency of extreme weather events, some of which are related to the El Niño/Southern Oscillation phenomenon. Three scenarios are presented for geographical changes to rate-driven and to event-driven processes: little change (displacement of agroecosystems and their associated pests to new climatic optima); expansion of tropical pests, contraction of Mediterranean (winter rainfall) pests; increased pest multiplication in geographically fixed agroecosystems such as irrigation schemes and some animal production systems. There is considerable uncertainty about the future severity of outbreaks and chronic infestations because of our current difficulties in forecasting and realistically simulating population changes in agroecosystems. This probably results from the complex feedback mechanisms involving natural enemies and other factors. In Australia the overall expansion of areas affected by tropical pests portends an overall worsening of agricultural pest problems. 相似文献

Eleven German Shepherd dogs with pituitary dwarfism were examined. They were severely stunted in growth and possessed abnormal hair coats with persistence of the soft puppy (lanugo) coat and symmetrical areas of alopecia. Various other physical defects were often present in affected dogs. Detailed hormonal studies demonstrated a severe deficiency in growth hormone in all five cases so evaluated. A decrease in somatomedin activity was present in three of these cases. Changes in growth plates epiphyses and ossification centres were apparent on radiographic examination of four of the eleven dogs. Epiphyseal dysgenesis was confirmed histologically in two of these cases. Of the six brains which were examined post mortem, four showed large cystic lesions involving the adenohypo–physis and two had pituitary hypoplasia with virtual absence of adenohy–pophyseal tissue. 相似文献

The clinical course of canine fucosidosis, a neurovisceral lysosomal storage disease, is described from observations of 31 affected English Springer Spaniels. The diagnosis of fucosidosis was suggested by the development of multifocal neurological signs in the second year of life and confirmed by a deficiency of alpha-L-fucosidase activity in plasma and leucocytes. The progressive motor and mental deterioration was similar in all dogs and no affected animal survived to four years of age. Alpha-L-fucosidase activity in plasma was <0·05 μ/1 in all cases. The activity in leucocytes and other tissues was < 5 per cent of that of normal dogs. Vacuolated leucocytes occurred in cerebrospinal fluid, blood and bone marrow. The enlargement of peripheral nerves which is observed at autopsy could be detected by palpation of the ulnar nerve in advanced disease, however the results of electrodiagnostic studies were within normal limits. The clinical signs and pathological changes were found to be remarkably consistent from case to case making it an excellent model for investigating therapeutic strategies in human lysosomal storage disorders. 相似文献
