In Brazil, most Eucalyptus stands have been planted on Cerrado (shrubby savanna) or on Cerrado converted into pasture. Case studies are needed to assess the effect of such land use changes on soil fertility and C sequestration. In this study, the influence of Cerrado land development (pasture and Eucalyptus plantations) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) stocks were quantified in southern Brazil. Two contrasted silvicultural practices were also compared: 60 years of short‐rotation silviculture (EUCSR) versus 60 years of continuous growth (EUCHF). C and N soil concentrations and bulk densities were measured and modelled for each vegetation type, and SOC and SON stocks were calculated down to a depth of 1 m by a continuous function. Changes in SOC and SON stocks mainly occurred in the forest floor (no litter in pasture and up to 0.87 kg C m?2 and 0.01 kg N m?2 in EUCSR) and upper soil horizons. C and N stocks and their confidence intervals were greatly influenced by the methodology used to compute these layers. C/N ratio and 13C analysis showed that down to a depth of 30 cm, the Cerrado organic matter was replaced by organic matter from newly introduced vegetation by as much as 75–100% for pasture and about 50% for EUCHF, poorer in N for Eucalyptus stands (C/N larger than 18 for Eucalyptus stands). Under pasture, 0–30 cm SON stocks (0.25 kg N m?2) were between 10 and 20% greater than those of the Cerrado (0.21 kg N m?2), partly due to soil compaction (limit bulk density at soil surface from 1.23 for the Cerrado to 1.34 for pasture). Land development on the Cerrado increased SOC stocks in the 0–30 cm layer by between 15 and 25% (from 2.99 (Cerrado) to 3.86 (EUCSR) kg C m?2). When including litter layers, total 0–30 cm carbon stocks increased by 35% for EUCHF (4.50 kg C m?2) and 53% for EUCSR (5.08 kg C m?2), compared with the Cerrado (3.28 kg C m?2), independently of soil compaction.  相似文献

Tropical plantation forests are meeting an increasing proportion of global wood demand and comprehensive studies assessing the impact of silvicultural practices on tree and soil functioning are required to achieve sustainable yields. The objectives of our study were: (1) to quantify the effects of contrasting organic residue (OR) retention methods on tree growth and soil nutrient pools over a full Eucalyptus rotation and (2) to assess the potential of soil analyses to predict yields of fast-growing plantations established on tropical sandy soils. An experiment was set up in the Congo at the harvesting of the first rotation after afforestation of a native herbaceous savanna. Six treatments were set up in 0.26 ha plots and replicated in 4 blocks, with OR mass at planting ranging from 0 to 46.5 Mg ha−1. Tree growth over the whole rotation was highly dependent on OR management at planting. Over-bark trunk volume 7 years after planting ranged from 96 m3 ha−1 in the treatment with forest floor and harvest residue removal at planting to 164 m3 ha−1 in the treatment with the largest amount of OR. A comparison of nutrient stocks within the ecosystem at planting and at the end of the rotation suggested that nutrient contents in OR were largely involved in the different response observed between treatments. OR management treatments did not significantly modify most of the nutrient concentrations in the upper layers of the mineral soil. Conventional soil analyses performed before planting and at ages 1 and 3 years were unable to detect differences between treatments despite large differences in tree growth. In contrast, linear regressions between stand aboveground biomass at harvesting and OR mass at planting (independent variable) showed that OR mass was an excellent predictor of stand yield (R2 = 0.99). A large share of soil fertility comes from organic material above the mineral soil in highly weathered sandy soils and OR mass at planting might be used in conjunction with soil analyses to assess the potential of these soils to support forest plantations.  相似文献

Parasitic filarial nematodes infect more than 200 million individuals worldwide, causing debilitating inflammatory diseases such as river blindness and lymphatic filariasis. Using a murine model for river blindness in which soluble extracts of filarial nematodes were injected into the corneal stroma, we demonstrated that the predominant inflammatory response in the cornea was due to species of endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria. In addition, the inflammatory response induced by these bacteria was dependent on expression of functional Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on host cells.  相似文献

The discovery of an existing member of the Glypheidae, a family believed to have been extinct since the Eocene, may yield significant information on the evolution and classification of the decapod Crustacea. The single known specimen displays characters not apparent in fossil material, some of them perhaps representative of an ancestral decapod lineage, others reminiscent of the Astacidea and Thalassinidea.  相似文献

Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FHL) is a rare, rapidly fatal, autosomal recessive immune disorder characterized by uncontrolled activation of T cells and macrophages and overproduction of inflammatory cytokines. Linkage analyses indicate that FHL is genetically heterogeneous and linked to 9q21.3-22, 10q21-22, or another as yet undefined locus. Sequencing of the coding regions of the perforin gene of eight unrelated 10q21-22-linked FHL patients revealed homozygous nonsense mutations in four patients and missense mutations in the other four patients. Cultured lymphocytes from patients had defective cytotoxic activity, and immunostaining revealed little or no perforin in the granules. Thus, defects in perforin are responsible for 10q21-22-linked FHL. Perforin-based effector systems are, therefore, involved not only in the lysis of abnormal cells but also in the down-regulation of cellular immune activation.  相似文献

Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is one of the most important plant viruses in the world. Two sources of resistance to BYDV derived from Thinopyrum intermedium were compared in wheat backgrounds. A source of resistance was confirmed in the partial amphiploid TAF46, the group 7 addition line L1, and translocation TC14. The other source of resistance derives from the partial amphiploid Zhong 5 and is present in the group 2 addition line Z6. Six ditelosomic addition lines have been derived from Z6. The resistance of genotypes derived from Zhong 5 is more effective at reducing virus multiplication throughout plant growth than that of genotypes derived from TAF46. The translocation line TC14, derived from TAF46 showed 30% plants escaping virus infection whereas all plants derived from Zhong 5 were infected. This suggests that the two sources of resistance are associated with differing mechanisms of resistance. Methods to better understand the genetic control and the mechanisms of these two resistances are suggested. The pyramiding of different sources of resistance to construct durable resistance is discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) technique was evaluated for its applicability to cultivar identification and assessment of genetic relationships in rose. Nine ISSR primers that revealed informative patterns were selected to fingerprint (by Resophor agarose gel electrophoresis) 33 cultivars, including unrelated cultivars, sports and offspring obtained by sexual propagation from the same initial variety. A total of 159 fragments were generated using these nine primers, 149 of which (93.7%) were polymorphic. All 33 rose cultivars, except for the known colour sports, were differentiated. A Jaccard's dissimilarity coefficient matrix of the cultivars showed a low dissimilarity level between them (mean dissimilarity: 0.45). An unweighted pair group method with the arithmetic averages dendrogram and principal coordinates analysis separated them into four main groups according to their horticultural classification and pedigree. The ISSR technique is therefore a potentially useful tool for cultivar identification and assessing genetic relationships in rose because it is simple, fast, cost-effective, reliable and highly discriminating.  相似文献

We compared Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn fractionation patterns in four typical soils naturally containing high levels of these elements on the tropical volcanic island of Réunion. Two sequential chemical extraction procedures were used: the modified four-stage BCR procedure (subsequently called mBCR) and the modified six-stage Geological Survey of Canada procedure (subsequently called mGSC). The results obtained by these two procedures highlighted some similarities. With both approaches, exchangeable fractions were the smallest fractions with respect to the four heavy metal (HM) distributions (< 5% of the total HM quantity), and residual fractions had the highest Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn contents (39.1–97.9%) in the four soils. In contrast, we noted differences in HM fractions bound to organic matter. These differences could be explained by the different reagents and extraction sequences implemented in the two procedures. However, the most marked difference in the results obtained by the two procedures concerned the HM fraction bound to oxyhydroxides, despite the fact that the same reagent was used (hydroxylammonium chloride). Our results revealed that the mBCR procedure underestimated the proportion of HM bound to this fraction. The mGSC procedure therefore seems more suitable for analysing tropical soils which typically contain high levels of Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To identify changes over time in relative expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and -9 (MMP-9) in synovial fluid from healthy calves and calves with experimentally induced septic arthritis. ANIMALS: 12 Holstein calves. PROCEDURES: In 7 calves, Escherichia coli was injected in the right tarsal joint on day 1. Joint lavage was performed on day 2, and calves were treated with ceftiofur from days 2 through 21. Synovial fluid samples were collected on days 1 (before inoculation), 2 (before joint lavage), 3, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24. In the remaining 5 calves, joint lavage was performed on day 2 and synovial fluid samples were collected from the left tarsal joint. Relative expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 was determined by means of gel zymography. RESULTS: On day 1, MMP-2 was detected in all synovial fluid samples but MMP-9 was not detected. In calves with septic arthritis, values for relative expression of MMP-9 monomer and dimer were significantly increased on days 2 through 20 and days 2 through 24, respectively, and relative expression of MMP-2 was significantly increased on days 3 through 20. There were significant linear associations between relative expression of the monomer and dimer forms of MMP-9 and between neutrophil count and relative expression of the MMP-9 monomer and dimer forms. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that relative expression of MMP-9 and MMP-2 increased in synovial fluid from calves with experimentally induced septic arthritis, with relative expression remaining high for several days after infection.  相似文献
