Earthworms dominate the animal biomass in moist floodplain soils. They are known to survive long periods in aerated water, but little is known about earthworm population dynamics in floodplain systems with changing inundation frequencies. This study determined earthworm population dynamics in a floodplain system, in relation to frequency and duration of flooding events. From October 2000 to May 2003 earthworms were hand sorted in the ‘Afferdensche en Deestsche Waarden’, a floodplain on the south bank of the river Rhine, near Druten, The Netherlands. Earthworm numbers and biomasses per age class (adult, subadult, juvenile) were recorded. Numbers and biomasses tend to decrease during flooding. Lumbricus terrestris was found in high numbers (>10/m2) only at the end of a flooding period. Allolobophora chlorotica was hardly affected by flooding; their biomass remained stable during the year. Aporrectodea caliginosa showed fluctuating numbers and biomasses during the sampling period that did not correlate with flooding frequency. Numbers and biomasses of Lumbricus rubellus were strongly reduced at the end of each flooding event, but their population densities fully recovered until next flooding event. Earthworm populations in floodplains fluctuate in time, depending on the season and on the time, duration and frequency of flooding. Different earthworm species react differently towards these flooding dynamics.  相似文献

Irrigation projects with reservoirs have contributed to the stabilization of traditional rainfed rice and to the introduction of double-rice in monsoon Asia. This type of irrigation also has the capability of shifting the traditional rice-cropping season. This paper discusses the influences of the shifted cropping season on water resources and the effective use of the reservoir in the Ngamoeyeik Irrigation Project Area in Lower Myanmar. Synthesized streamflow data were applied to simulate water storage in the reservoir. The main results are as follows: (1) shifting the cropping season to avoid inundation problems can increase water availability, (2) the amount of evaporation loss in the reservoir water budget can be as high as 16%, which decreases water efficiency in the reservoir operation during the dry season, (3) a shifted cropping season is preferable under the special hydrological conditions found in Lower Myanmar.  相似文献

为了提高冬季暴雨预报准确率,及时为政府和人民提供准确的预报服务,减少农业生产的损失,利用自动站雨量资料以及NECP FNL分析资料分别对广西冬季两次农业致灾暴雨2016年1月27—28日和2013年12月13—16日进行实况分析、天气学分析和湿位涡诊断分析。结果表明:暴雨发生在MPV1正值区前侧的负值区或0值附近和MPV2负值中心南侧的低值区内。MPV1和MPV2对两类降水落区均具有一定的指示意义,但MPV1中心不能决定锋面暴雨降水落区却对降水具有潜势预报,MPV2对强降水的发生有一定的提前预报。MPV等值线密集区,冷暖空气交汇强烈有利于水汽辐合、垂直涡度发展易产生暴雨。  相似文献

In the highly polluted river Rhine system, earthworms face environmental stress resulting from flooding and elevated heavy metal concentrations in the floodplain soil. Previous field studies have revealed adaptation to flooding for the earthworm species Lumbricus rubellus as this species matures at a lower weight in floodplain sites with a high frequency of flooding compared to less frequently flooded sites. Also heavy metals have effects on L. rubellus and heavy metals are influencing the genetic composition of this species. In this study, it was tested whether flooding and heavy metals had an impact on the genetic composition of L. rubellus living in floodplains along the river Rhine system. Earthworms were sampled at three sites previously studied along the river to assess earthworm diversity, biomass, density, and individual weight, and developmental status of L. rubellus. The genetic variation by means of isozymes was studied for 175 individuals. The results showed lowest density of L. rubellus adult and sub-adult life-stages and lowest individual weight of these life-stages at the frequent inundated site. The genetic composition, however, showed no effects of flooding on the genetic composition, but effects of heavy metals could not be ruled out.  相似文献

Availability and leaching of dissolved inorganic N (DIN = NH4+ + NO3-) in soil were measured in a periodically flooded forest of the Central Amazon floodplain (várzea) during one terrestrial phase. Special emphasis was on the effects of a legume and a non-legume tree species. NH4+-N accounted for more than 85% of DIN even at the end of the terrestrial phase although it decreased throughout the experimental period. While extractable NO3-N was always low in the soil (less than 15% of DIN), the amount of leached NO3-N was in the same range as NH4+-N. Under the legume trees mean DIN contents of the topsoil were higher than under the non-legume trees. DIN leaching from the topsoil (0–20 cm) was significantly higher under the legume trees than at the other sites, also indicating a higher N availability. Therefore, despite considerable leaching legume trees may be an important source of N supporting a high biomass production of the várzea forest.  相似文献

To clarify the effects of inundation on the establishment of Salix gracilistyla trees, the relationship between total inundation duration and the distribution and size of trees was examined on a gravel bar along the Miya River in central Japan. The density of S. gracilistyla was low at both low and high elevations on the gravel bar, but high at middle elevations. The density increased with up to 165 days of inundation and declined gradually with more than 165 days of inundation. Density had a negative effect on crown area, whereas inundation duration had a positive effect. At lower elevations, growth limitation of S. gracilistyla is mainly caused by inundation stress, whereas at higher elevations it seems to be primarily due to drought stress, although it depends on the total duration of inundation in a year (TDIY). Consequently, the density is highest at middle elevations where trees do not become too large. These results suggest that inundation duration is one factor determining the density of S. gracilistyla trees, which in turn affects the size of each tree.  相似文献

Soil collembola in floodplain habitats are known to react dynamically to inundation, showing direct negative effects of inundation as well as rapid regeneration after flooding. Unknown, however, are how these communities react to variable inundation and the role that spatial and temporal habitat heterogeneity plays. Therefore, the small-scale spatio-temporal dynamics of soil collembolan communities after varying inundation were studied in floodplain habitats in the Upper Rhine Valley in Germany. After frequent flooding, significant differences in density and species richness were found between different floodplain levels of the same location. Due to different species’ responses, major differences occurred in community structure. After infrequent inundation the densities and species richness of the same sites and especially hygrophilous components decreased dramatically. Between neighbouring sites, species exchange occurred and community structures became more similar. The results show that at the same locality soil collembola react dynamically as well as differentially to changes in the hydrological regime. Small-scale landscape heterogeneity allows a mixture of differentially reacting species to occur within the same regional metacommunity. Long-term stability of collembolan communities despite the high spatio-temporal heterogeneity of floodplains is thus maintained by metacommunity dynamics.  相似文献
