Heat stress in cattle results in millions of dollars in lost revenue each year due to production losses, and in extreme cases, death. Death losses are more likely to result from animals vulnerable to heat stress. A study was conducted to determine risk factors for heat stress in feedlot heifers. Over two consecutive summers, a total of 256 feedlot heifers (32/ breed/ year) of four breeds were observed. As a measure of stress, respiration rates and panting scores were taken twice daily (morning and afternoon) on a random sample of 10 heifers/ breed. Weights, condition scores, and temperament scores were taken on 28-day intervals during the experiment. Health history from birth to slaughter was available for every animal used in this study. It was found that at temperatures above 25 °C, dark-hided animals were 25% more stressed than light-colored; a history of respiratory pneumonia increased stress level by 10.5%; each level of fatness increased stress level by approximately 10%; and excitable animals had a 3.2% higher stress level than calm animals. Not only did the stress level increase with these risk factors, but average daily gain was reduced. The Charolais cattle gained significantly more than all other breeds of cattle tested. Calm cattle gained 5% more than excitable cattle. Finally, cattle treated for pneumonia gained approximately 8% slower than non-treated cattle. The results of this study have not only revealed heat stress risk factors of breed (color), condition score (fatness), temperament, and health history (treated or not treated for pneumonia), but have also shown the effectiveness of using respiration rate as an indicator of heat stress. 相似文献

AIM:To study the variety of cytokines in severe bacterial pneumonia of Sprague Dawleg (SD) rats. METHODS:A total of 60 SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: model Ⅰ group (n=24), model Ⅱ group (n=24), and control group (n=12). Rats in the model Ⅰ group and the model Ⅱ group were intratracheally instilled with suspension of klebsiella pneumoniae at different doses. Rats in the control group were intratracheally injected with 1 mL saline. On the 2nd, 4th and 6th day after intratracheal instillation, 1/3 rats in each group were killed to determine the concentration of IFN-γ, IL-6 and TNF-α in blood. RESULTS:The levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in model groups were higher than those in control group, while the level of IFN-γ was lower. The change of cytokines was more significant in the model Ⅱ group (severe pneumonia) than those in the model Ⅰ group. CONCLUSION:The cytokines we studied may play an important role in the pathogenesis of severe pneumonia. The change of cytokines is more significant in severe pneumonia than those in common pneumonia. 相似文献

Background
Real‐time, quantitative PCR (qPCR) methods for detecting Rhodococcus equi in feces have been developed as a noninvasive, rapid diagnostic test for R. equi pneumonia, but have not been evaluated in a large population of foals. Objective
The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of fecal PCR as a diagnostic test for R. equi pneumonia in foals using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) methods.Animals
186 foals born in 2011 at an R. equi‐endemic ranch in Texas.Methods
Fecal samples were collected at the time of onset of clinical signs for pneumonic foals (n = 31). Foals with pneumonia were matched by age and birth date to healthy (n = 31) and subclinical (n = 124) control foals; fecal samples were collected from these controls. DNA was extracted from feces using commercial kits and concentration of virulent R. equi in feces was determined by qPCR.Results
Concentration of R. equi in feces differed significantly (P < .05) among groups. The area under the ROC curve for fecal qPCR for diagnosis of R. equi pneumonia was 89% (95% CI, 83–99), with a sensitivity of 94% and specificity of 72%.Conclusions and Clinical Importance
qPCR of feces can be useful as an alternative to tracheobronchial aspiration for the diagnosis of R. equi in foals with clinical signs of pneumonia. Caution should be used in extrapolating results of this study to other populations because fecal concentration of R. equi might vary by geographic location or management practices.
