Abstract: | One hundred eighty B-mode ultrasound examinations of the brain were performed in 34 neonatal dogs from six litters using the bregmatic fontanelle to provide an acoustic window. One image from a hydrocephalic neonate of another litter was included for comparison. Histologic verification of anatomic structures was done in 19 of the 34 subjects. Imaging of 15 additional animals indicated the bregmatic fontanelle could serve as a sonographic window during the first three to four weeks after birth. Measured values of the largest lateral ventricle with a normal histologic evaluation were: lateral ventricular height = 0.15 cm, ventricle-hemisphere ratio = 0.09, and ventricle-mantle ratio = 0.15. A Beagle neonate without histologic analysis had a lateral ventricular height of 0.31 cm, a ventricle-hemisphere ratio of 0.19 and a ventricle-mantle ratio of 0.19. |
