Abstract:The per capita levels of protein from various animal sources and from plant sources which are currently available for human consumption are presented and discussed. Changes in the patterns of consumption which occur as the standard of living is improved are documented for various countries. These patterns are used to suggest that increased production of plant protein alone will not necessarily be a solution to the problem of meeting increasing world needs for dietary protein. Products from plant protein sources need to be developed which will compete with animal protein sources.
