Abstract: | Sperm from five mammalian species was tested for ability of N. gonorrhoeae from colony types 1 and 4 to attach. Gonococci attached to swine sperm> human, > dog, > cat, > rhesus monkey. Isolated gonococcal pili were radioiodinated and were assayed for attachment to sperm of three of the species. Maximum saturation of swine, human and canine sperm occurred between 15 and 30 min, with a subsequent decrease in attachment noted at later time points. Attachment was greatest with sperm from swine. These data suggested that eukaryotic cell wall components, perhaps gangliosides, might serve as receptors for pili. |
