Abstract: | In natural communities undergoing attrition some species may remain stable, while others may decline or become extinct. Use of, say, proportion extinct as a measure of attrition can be misleading, since two communities may have the same proportion extinct, yet in one community all other species may be stable, whilst in the other all other species may be in decline. This paper describes a simple method of ordinating communities, or groups of organisms within communities, in a framework similar to the sand-silt-clay triangle used in soil science. Attrition is expressed as an index ranging from zero for total stability, to unity or a hundred percent for total extinction. |
