Characteristics of average air temperature and extreme air temperature changes in Urumqi region for the past 50 years

Abstract:Based on annual average air temperature,annual extreme maximum air temperature and annual extreme minimum air temperature during 1960-2009 from four meteorological stations which are located in different vertical gradient altitude in Urumqi region,characteristics of annual average air temperature,annual extreme maximum air temperature and annual extreme minimum air temperature changes for past nearly 50 years are analyzed by using linear trend analysis method,Mann-Kendall test method,wavelet periodic analysis method and other methods.We obtained some important results.Firstly,the change trends of annual average air temperatures in Urumqi region for past nearly 50 years are similar.The change rate of annual average air temperature is 0.23℃/10a to 0.25℃/10a and annual average air temperature increase by 1.2℃ to 1.3℃ for past nearly 50 years.Annual extreme maximum air temperature in Urumqi urban decline obviously with a decrease of 2.5℃ and decrease rate of up to-0.51℃/10a for past nearly 50 years,but for other places in Urumqi region,they increase slowly.Annual extreme minimum air temperature in Urumqi urban rise significantly with a increase of 6.4℃ and increase rate of up to 1.28℃/10a for past nearly 50 years.Annual extreme minimum air temperatures in Dabancheng and middle mountain zone(Xiaoquzi) show relatively slow upward trend with a increase rate of 0.46℃/10a for past nearly 50 years but they decline slowly with a decrease rate of-0.13℃/10a in alpine zones(Daxigou).Secondly,annual average air temperatures increase suddenly in Urumqi region for past nearly 50 years and the sudden change time of annual average air temperatures for urban,Dabancheng,middle mountain zone(Xiaoquzi) and alpine zone are 1998,1976,2002 and 1997,respectively.Annual extreme maximum air temperature decrease suddenly in Urumqi urban for past nearly 50 years and the sudden change time is 1978,but annual extreme maximum air temperature increased suddenly in alpine zone(Daxigou) and the sudden change time is 1972.For Dabancheng and middle mountain zone(Xiaoquzi),annual extreme maximum air temperatures do not change suddenly.Annual extreme minimum air temperatures increase suddenly in Urumqi urban and Dabancheng and the sudden change time for these two places are 1980 and 1977,respectively.For middle mountain zone and alpine zone,annual extreme minimum air temperatures do not change obviously.Thirdly,there is quasi-nine year cycle in annual average air temperatures in Urumqi region and this cycle may be the dominant cycle which affect annual average air temperature of Urumqi region.
