Abstract: | The paper, read at the British Association meeting at Edinburghin August 1951, considers shortly the evidence on the suitabilityof home-grown conifer thinnings as pit-props. Two examples ofother good uses for conifer thinnings are cited, one in theForestry Commission's new forest in East Anglia and one by privateenterprise near Chester. Figures are given to show the veryconsiderable quantities of conifer thinnings available in 1951and likely to be available in 1961. The eSect of rapid growthand pruning on conifer wood quality and use is discussed andthe writer's opinion recorded that as high quality timber aspossible should be aimed at. Too much reliance should not beplaced on increases in chemical and pulping developments whereknots may be unimportant. In sawn timber knots are often a criticalfactor. |
